- Synopsis
- The years since the 2018 Aetna merger that brought Lynch to CVS Health had been consequential. By that time, CVS Health was already well along on its transformation from a drug store chain to a multi-faceted provider of health care benefits and services. Though candy remained on store shelves, tobacco did not. Then, in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated further changes even as it initially emptied stores. CVS Health became a major testing site and, when vaccines became available, a major vaccination site. During the pandemic, CVS Health developed new products and services, such as entering individual insurance exchanges with a co-branded CVS Health and Aetna product and identifying diverse participants for clinical trials to speed inclusive drug development. By the end of fiscal year 2020, stores accounted for only about a third of CVS Health's $269 billion in revenues, pharmacy services about half, and health care benefits another third.
