- Synopsis
- In a number of developing economies, remittances have become an important and stable source of funds that exceeds receipts from exports of goods and services or from financial inflows on foreign direct investment. This manual provides detailed assistance on the compilation of remittances. It is the first compilation guide based on the concepts set out in the sixth edition of the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual. Chapters give background on demography, transaction channels, and legal and regulatory issues, and explain underlying concepts. The book then details data sources and estimation methods, and discusses compilation, data-processing, and dissemination issues. It includes a glossary of terms. The book was authored by members of the Luxemboug Group on Remittances, a working group composed of representatives of the International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, the World Bank, and representatives from national statistical offices and central banks from economies around the world.
