- Sir Henry Havelock was a British general who served in India, playing a prominent role during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. First Burmese War, (1824-1826); First Afghan War (1839-42); Gwalior War (1843); First Sikh War (1845-1846); distinguished himself during Sepoy Rebellion (1857-58) - Major general (1857); relieved Lucknow (Sept., 1857) and held it against native siege until arrival of Sir Colin Campbell (Nov. 1857). Died of dysentery at Lucknow, Nov. 24th, 1857."A diminutive man, barely five feet tall, and a devout Christian, he was intelligent and able, possessing great energy and determination; his apparent fussiness was belied by his imaginative enterprise in the field".
