- Synopsis
- “To build communism it is necessary, simultaneous with the new material foundations, to build the new man.” Ernesto Che Guevara “A common argument from the mouths of capitalist spokesmen in the ideological struggle against socialism,” Guevara explains, “is that socialism is characterized by the abolition of the individual for the sake of the state. I will not try to refute this argument solely on theoretical grounds, but rather to establish the facts as they exist in Cuba.” Written in 1965, this is Guevara’s best-known presentation of the political tasks and challenges of the working class in leading the transition from capitalism to socialism. Also included is Fidel Castro’s speech in 1987 on the twentieth anniversary of Guevara’s murder by US-organized counterrevolutionary forces in Bolivia.
