Synopsis: Data fusion is the process of integrating multiple data sources to produce more consistent, accurate, and comprehensive information than that provided by any individual data source. State departments of transportation (DOTs) are seeking to define the types and characteristics of data for entry into data fusion engines to help forecast travel time, speed, reliability, and other aspects of operational performance on roadway networks. NCHRP Research Report 1127: Data Fusion of Probe and Point Sensor Data: A Guide, from TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program, is a guide to facilitate data fusion and improve data reporting to support traffic management at state DOTs.
