The book starts with a function at the palace. Tara of Helium, daughter of John Carter is spurned by Djor Kantos and she spends some time with Gahan, jed of Gathol. He proposes to her which throws into a tantrum. She decides to fly to get some space for herself and is blown off course by a storm. This storm is a very powerful storm and causes one of the towers of Helium to fall. Gahan and his men are the only people able to search for Tara just then. Tara and Gahan undergo several adventures and the final battle is fought with Gathol's ancient enemy Manator. Gahan has to win Tara at a game of Jetan or chess and hence the title of the book. As usual, the book glorifies war but this time though there is a good discussion of balanced development of mind and body and the book also involves more strategy rather than simple sword play. There is also a reference to superstition and some clever exploitation of people's hesitation to think beyond the obvious when unusual things occur. Written by Pranav Lal.
