- Synopsis
- Darkness was her friend - and her enemy. Paula Grey arrived at the address in Vienna in Annagasse after night had fallen. The side street was deserted. On both sides ancient buildings rose up like the walls of a canyon. The deep silence was unsettling and her rubber-soled shoes made no noise on the cobbles. She opened the small door set into one of two huge wooden gates. In past times the gates had been opened to allow horses to haul large carriages into the spacious courtyard beyond. Closing the door behind her quietly she paused to gaze round, to listen. More oppressive silence. On three sides of the courtyard apertures in the old grey stone led to staircases giving access to different apartments. Paula looked up and saw lights in Norbert Engel's apartment behind closed curtains. Tweed had sent her to warn the only statesman who could save Germany from chaos in an emergency that his life was in danger.
