Barometer Rising is surely one of the most descriptive novels of its time. Hugh Maclennan takes time to capture the beauty of halifax and eventually its destrucution through carefully chosen words bringing halifax to life as the reader reads through the book. The story does take a long time to come to its peak of events (i.e. the explosion at Halifax bay) which sucks the patience out of the readers. He uses an appropriate way to end his novel by enabling the reader to think of how Neil and Penny were to live their lives.
