- Synopsis
- After a life filled with financial failures, J. C. Adams moves to the Sierra Mountains, wanting to escape mankind. He has only been there about a month when he makes a deadly enemy and acquires the companionship of a grizzly cub and wins the respect of its mother. Trouble awaits him. He lives in peaceful cooperation with the Digger Indian tribe living near him, is accepted and liked by others with whom he has made acquaintance. He saves the life of an escaped black slave, and is fortunate to have his friendship when he must confront the trouble that invades his mountain kingdom, including Claw Wyler, who swore revenge on him and has finally turned back up, a deadly epidemic, and a nephew who came out west on an orphan train and has been snatched by Claw Wyler, who trades children as slaves to the Crow Indians, who have planned to sacrifice them to avoid the epidemics white settlers have brought to the land. People he has met and animals he has befriended, including the bear cub and its mother, are helpful.
