What a read! While we don't all have friendships dating from preschool, many of us have long term friendships with women. This gem traces 11 girls until their current mid-forties: the decades and life challenges as they pass. (Yes, they still call themselves "the girls". I admit, I did have a probelem keeping some of the names and personalities matched up.) The girls leave Ames and go country-wide, but have frequent reunions. The author, a male journalist, brings a style that a female author might not have. He questions everything. The results are a book that truly made me laugh, cry, worry about the girls and their families, and look at my own friendships. While The Girls from Ames (a smallish town in Iowa) focuses on childhood friendships carried forward, there is also much that can be applied to later, newer, and brand-new friendships. Interspersed are small amounts of research study results about female friendships--which just prove what most of us already knew. I have already told my women friends this book is MUST READ. One sighted friend bought it yesterday, with plans for passing around. I am looking forward to my own circle of friends from over the decades reading and discussing this. I hope many younger women read it and recognize the value of maintaining relationships with other women.
