- Synopsis
- All good paintings are composed, whether consciously or unconsciously. If you are working direct from a landscape subject, you can only compose with what you see before you, but for studio paintings you have more leeway because you can arrange the subject as you choose. In the first part of this book the author has dealt with what might be termed "rearranging nature," while in the second he has provided some ideas on composing portraits, still life and floral groups by planning the initial set-up as well as the painting itself. He has also explained some of the more formal rules of composition based on geometry -- most artists are aware of these, and you may find them interesting even if you do not see an immediate application to your own work.
