Synopsis
Many types of beef cattle exist throughout North America, and cattle are maintained in a variety of environments. Since publication of the Sixth Revised Edition of Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle in 1984, researchers have reached a much better understanding of the effects of cattle type, physiological condition, and environment on nutrient requirements. This Seventh Revised Edition reflects these recent findings by addressing the effects that body condition and compensatory growth have on the energy requirements of cattle. Also documented is the importance of the effects of environment and stress on feed intake. This volume provides a computer model (on diskette) for predicting the nutrient requirements of cattle under various conditions. The model allows use with widely varying objectives. In addition, it considers ruminal carbohydrate, protein utilization, and amino acid supply to aid in understanding the processes of nutrient utilization. Acknowledging the trend toward leaner meats and less fat, the volume will help users discern nutrient requirements for feeding more precisely to different levels of fatness. More precise feeding can also help reduce environmental pollution from beef cattle operations by reducing nutrient losses. This update also reflects new findings in fetal development, lactation, nitrogen usage in ruminants, mineral and vitamin requirements, trace mineral needs in young cattle, and water requirements. Offering completely updated nutrient tables and more, this volume will be of value to students and professionals of nutrition and beef cattle production.
