Interval Type-3 Fuzzy Systems: Theory and Design (Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing #418)

by Oscar Castillo Patricia Melin Juan R. Castro

This book briefly reviews the basic concepts of type-2 fuzzy systems and then describes the proposed definitions for interval type-3 fuzzy sets and relations, also interval type-3 inference and systems. The use of type-2 fuzzy systems has become widespread in the leading economy sectors, especially in industrial and application areas, such as services, health, defense, and so on. However, recently the use of interval type-3 fuzzy systems has been receiving increasing attention and some successful applications have been developed in the last year. These issues were taken into consideration for this book, as we did realize that there was a need to offer the main theoretical concepts of type-3 fuzzy logic, as well as methods to design, develop and implement the type-3 fuzzy systems. A review of basic concepts and their use in the design and implementation of interval type-3 fuzzy systems, which are relatively new models of uncertainty and imprecision, are presented. The main focus of this work is based on the basic reasons of the need for interval type-3 fuzzy systems in different areas of application. In addition, we describe methods for designing interval type-3 fuzzy systems and illustrate this with some examples and simulations.

Tempest: Geometries Of Play

by Judd Ethan Ruggill Ken S. Mcallister

Atari's 1981 arcade hit Tempest was a "tube shooter" built around glowing, vector-based geometric shapes. Among its many important contributions to both game and cultural history, Tempest was one of the first commercial titles to allow players to choose the game's initial play difficulty (a system Atari dubbed "SkillStep"), a feature that has since became standard for games of all types. Tempest was also one of the most aesthetically impactful games of the twentieth century, lending its crisp, vector aesthetic to many subsequent movies, television shows, and video games. In this book, Ruggill and McAllister enumerate and analyze Tempest's landmark qualities, exploring the game's aesthetics, development context, and connections to and impact on video game history and culture. By describing the game in technical, historical, and ludic detail, they unpack the game's latent and manifest audio-visual iconography and the ideological meanings this iconography evokes.

Subversion, Sexuality and the Virtual Self

by Jude Elund

This work explores the construction of identity in digitised and virtual screen environments, specifically investigating the phenomenon of three-dimensional virtual worlds in relation to our physical selves. Using four regions of Second Life as a foundation of analysis, this book explores the issues surrounding the body, embodiment, virtual space and tourism, as well as examining notions of subversion as they relate to gender and sexuality in screen environments. The key arguments put forthin this work have their foundations in poststructuralist theories of the body, primarily examining the issues of bodily perfection, pornography, virtual tourism, virtual sex and subversion. Most important to this analysis are the cultural and social conditions that replicate dominant tropes of power and agency as they are applied to representational practices, such as embodying oneself via an avatar through the screen. The arguments in this book are readily extendible to other on-screen environments due to the proliferation of virtual environments and other social networks which are premised on real-time engagement through digitised interaction.

Biologically Rationalized Computing Techniques For Image Processing Applications (Lecture Notes in Computational Vision and Biomechanics #25)

by Valentina Emilia Balas Jude Hemanth

This book introduces readers to innovative bio-inspired computing techniques for image processing applications. It demonstrates how a significant drawback of image processing - not providing the simultaneous benefits of high accuracy and less complexity - can be overcome, proposing bio-inspired methodologies to help do so. Besides computing techniques, the book also sheds light on the various application areas related to image processing, and weighs the pros and cons of specific methodologies. Even though several such methodologies are available, most of them do not provide the simultaneous benefits of high accuracy and less complexity, which explains their low usage in connection with practical imaging applications, such as the medical scenario. Lastly, the book illustrates the methodologies in detail, making it suitable for newcomers to the field and advanced researchers alike.

Nature Inspired Optimization Techniques for Image Processing Applications (Intelligent Systems Reference Library #150)

by Valentina Emilia Balas Jude Hemanth

This book provides a platform for exploring nature-inspired optimization techniques in the context of imaging applications. Optimization has become part and parcel of all computational vision applications, and since the amount of data used in these applications is vast, the need for optimization techniques has increased exponentially. These accuracy and complexity are a major area of concern when it comes to practical applications. However, these optimization techniques have not yet been fully explored in the context of imaging applications. By presenting interdisciplinary concepts, ranging from optimization to image processing, the book appeals to a broad readership, while also encouraging budding engineers to pursue and employ innovative nature-inspired techniques for image processing applications.

Boosted Statistical Relational Learners: From Benchmarks to Data-Driven Medicine (SpringerBriefs in Computer Science)

by Sriraam Natarajan Kristian Kersting Tushar Khot Jude Shavlik

This SpringerBrief addresses the challenges of analyzing multi-relational and noisy data by proposing several Statistical Relational Learning (SRL) methods. These methods combine the expressiveness of first-order logic and the ability of probability theory to handle uncertainty. It provides an overview of the methods and the key assumptions that allow for adaptation to different models and real world applications. The models are highly attractive due to their compactness and comprehensibility but learning their structure is computationally intensive. To combat this problem, the authors review the use of functional gradients for boosting the structure and the parameters of statistical relational models. The algorithms have been applied successfully in several SRL settings and have been adapted to several real problems from Information extraction in text to medical problems. Including both context and well-tested applications, Boosting Statistical Relational Learning from Benchmarks to Data-Driven Medicine is designed for researchers and professionals in machine learning and data mining. Computer engineers or students interested in statistics, data management, or health informatics will also find this brief a valuable resource.

Detecting Trust and Deception in Group Interaction (Terrorism, Security, and Computation)

by V. S. Subrahmanian Judee K. Burgoon Norah E. Dunbar

This book analyzes the multimodal verbal and nonverbal behavior of humans in both an artificial game, based on the well-known Mafia and Resistance games, as well as selected other settings. This book develops statistical results linking different types of facial expressions (e.g. smile, pursed lips, raised eyebrows), vocal features (e.g., pitch, loudness) and linguistic features (e.g., dominant language, turn length) with both unary behaviors (e.g. is person X lying?) to binary behaviors (Is person X dominant compared to person Y? Does X trust Y? Does X like Y?). In addition, this book describes machine learning and computer vision-based algorithms that can be used to predict deception, as well as the visual focus of attention of people during discussions that can be linked to many binary behaviors. It is written by a multidisciplinary team of both social scientists and computer scientists.Meetings are at the very heart of human activity. Whether you are involved in a business meeting or in a diplomatic negotiation, such an event has multiple actors, some cooperative and some adversarial. Some actors may be deceptive, others may have complex relationships with others in the group. This book consists of a set of 11 chapters that describe the factors that link human behavior in group settings and attitudes to facial and voice characteristics.Researchers working in social sciences (communication, psychology, cognitive science) with an interest in studying the link between human interpersonal behavior and facial/speech/linguistic characteristics will be interested in this book. Computer scientists, who are interested in developing machine learning and deep learning based models of human behavior in group settings will also be interested in purchasing this book.
