Robbing the Bees: A Biography of Honey

by Holley Bishop

"Honey has been waiting almost ten million years for a good biography," writes Holley Bishop. Bees have been making this food on Earth for hundreds of millennia, but we humans started recording our fascination with it only in the past few thousand years -- painting bees and hives on cave and temple walls and papyrus scrolls, revering them in poetry and art, even worshipping these amazing little insects as gods. From the temples of the Nile to the hives behind the author's own house, people have had a long, rapturous love affair with the beehive and the seductive, addictive honey it produces. Combining passionate research, rich detail, and fascinating anecdote, Holley Bishop's Robbing the Bees is an in-depth, sumptuous look at the oldest, most delectable food in the world.Part biography, part history, Robbing the Bees is also a celebration, a love letter to bees and their magical produce. Honey has played significant and varied roles in civilization: it is so sweet that bacteria can't survive in it, so it was our first food preservative and all-purpose wound salve. Honey wine, or mead, was the intoxicant of choice long before beer or wine existed. Hindus believe honey leads to a long life; Mohammed looked to honey as a remedy for all illness. Virgil; Aristotle; Pythagoras; Gregor Mendel; Sylvia Plath's father, Otto; and Sir Edmund Hillary are among the famous beekeepers and connoisseurs who have figured in honey's past and shaped its present. To help navigate the worlds and cultures of honey, Holley Bishop -- beekeeper, writer, and honey aficionado -- apprentices herself to a modern guide and expert, professional beekeeper Donald Smiley, who harvests tupelo honey from hundreds of hives in the remote town of Wewahitchka, Florida. Bishop chronicles Smiley's day-to-day business as he robs his bees in the steamy Florida panhandle and provides an engaging exploration of the lively science, culture, and lore that surround each step of the beekeeping process and each stage of bees' lives.Interspersed throughout the narrative are the author's lyrical reflections on her own beekeeping experiences, the business and gastronomical world of honey, the myriad varieties of honey (as distinct as the provenance of wine), as well as illustrations, historical quotes, and recipes -- ancient, contemporary, and some of the author's own creations.

Bobby Flay’s Boy Gets Grill

by Bobby Flay Julia Moskin

Sequel to the bestsellingBoy Meets Grill, Boy Gets Grillmarks Bobby Flay's return to the fire with his first grilling book in five years. The connection between Flay and fire began when, as a kid growing up in New York City, Bobby learned to grill during trips to the Jersey Shore. As a young chef starting out, he always wanted to work the grill station, and when he opened his first restaurant in 1991, he called it Mesa Grill. The wordgrillwas firmly hooked to his name. And then, the Food Network called. Like his highly rated prime-time grilling show,Boy Gets Grillis set on a rooftop in Queens overlooking the Manhattan skyline and celebrates the explosive flavors of his hometown's diverse neighborhoods. This is Bobby Flay's New York, and everywhere he goes, there is great grilling: from Chinatown to Astoria, Queens (Greek food); Arthur Avenue in the Bronx (for old-style Italian); and lower Lexington Avenue (better known as Curry Hill, for Indian); and the flavors go on and on. The question isn't "Can I grill this?" but "Is there a reason not to grill this?" Usually the answer is "Go ahead and try it!" Throughout, Bobby gets more and more out of the grill, making life easier and encouraging everyone to think big, have fun, and get their hands dirty. The grill is no longer for weekends only. The recipes inBoy Gets Grillare the quickest and easiest that Bobby has ever created, making the grill a perfect vehicle for busy weeknight meals. Flavors are (pleasantly) challenging. For the simplest of suppers, try Grilled Quesadillas with Sliced Steak, Blue Cheese, and Watercress; Grilled Shrimp with Triple Lemon Butter; Grilled Tuna with Red Chile, Allspice, and Orange Glaze; or a Pressed Cuban-Style Burger. Boy Gets Grillis also full of great ideas for entertaining and enjoying the company of family and friends. In the "Big Parties" section, Bobby takes hosts and hostesses through every step of preparation for a Fish Taco Party, Burger Bar, and a Skewer Party (perfect for backyard cocktail parties where one hand stays free to hold a glass). There are even recipes for brunch on the grill. The book includes cool drinks to sip while the fire gets hot, as well as appetizers, salads, simple desserts, and, of course, the meats, fish, and poultry that everyone loves to grill. Bobby also gives tips on what equipment you need to grill (and more important, what you don't); six simple (and decidedly low-tech) steps to test for doneness; how to gauge how hot your fire is; and Bobby's Guide to Steak.

Scones and Sensibility

by Lindsay Eland

Seek tirelessly and you shall not find a contemporary heroine of middle-grade literature as refined and romantic as Miss Polly Madassa. Still swooning over the romantic conclusions of Pride & Prejudice and Anne of Green Gables, twelve-year-old Polly decides her purpose in life: helping along lonely hearts in search of love. Polly's only task this summer is to make deliveries for her parents' bakery, leaving ample time for this young cupid to find hearts to mend--beginning with the kite-store owner, Mr. Nightquist, who will pair perfectly with Miss Wiskerton (the unfairly labeled town curmudgeon). Polly's best friend Fran Fisk is in desperate need of a mother ever since hers ran off with a man she met on the Internet; Polly must find a match for Mr. Fisk. And while she's at it, it wouldn't hurt to find Clementine, Polly's teenaged sister, a beau worthy of her (so she can shed that brute, Clint). Polly's plans are in full swing, so she definitely cannot be bothered by the advances of classmate Brad Barker. But maybe Polly should have turned her attention to Miss Austen's Emma next, because she quickly learns the pitfalls of playing matchmaker. How will Polly patch up her own relationships, while ensuring that destined love can take its course?

The Menial Art of Cooking: Archaeological Studies of Cooking and Food Preparation

by Sarah R. Graff Enrique Rodríguez-Alegría

Although the archaeology of food has long played an integral role in our understanding of past cultures, the archaeology of cooking is rarely integrated into models of the past. The cooks who spent countless hours cooking and processing food are overlooked and the forgotten players in the daily lives of our ancestors. The Menial Art of Cooking shows how cooking activities provide a window into other aspects of society and, as such, should be taken seriously as an aspect of social, cultural, political, and economic life. This book examines techniques and technologies of food preparation, the spaces where food was cooked, the relationship between cooking and changes in suprahousehold economies, the religious and symbolic aspects of cooking, the relationship between cooking and social identity, and how examining foodways provides insight into social relations of production, distribution, and consumption. Contributors use a wide variety of evidence--including archaeological data; archival research; analysis of ceramics, fauna, botany, glass artifacts, stone tools, murals, and painted ceramics; ethnographic analogy; and the distribution of artifacts across space--to identify evidence of cooking and food processing left by ancient cooks. The Menial Art of Cooking is the first archaeological volume focused on cooking and food preparation in prehistoric and historic settings around the world and will interest archaeologists, social anthropologists, sociologists, and other scholars studying cooking and food preparation or subsistence.
