Failure to Thrive and Malnutrition: A Practical, Evidence-Based Clinical Guide

by Joyee Goswami Vachani

Failure to Thrive (FTT) is a multifactorial illness requiring the systematic application of evidence in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team-based approach. Evidence suggests most cases of FTT can be diagnosed using key elements of the patient history and physical examination including appropriate growth assessment, and that laboratory testing is usually unhelpful in determining an etiology. Despite this, there is wide variation in the definition, evaluation, treatment, costs, and outcomes of FTT patients, with subsequent burdens on the healthcare system. A suggested approach to the differential diagnosis and management of FTT is to review calories – inadequate caloric intake, excessive calorie losses, and/or increased caloric intake (i.e. increased metabolic demand) – while acknowledging the available resources along the continuum of patient care. Implementing evidence-based practice for FTT provides improvement opportunities for providers and potentially has significant impact on the healthcare system. This book is designed to present a practical and concise handbook on the diagnosis and management of failure to thrive (FTT)/ malnutrition for quick reference by trainees and practitioners by using case examples and available evidence in the current literature. This book is divided into 7 chapters in a logical progression of defining, diagnosing, and managing FTT with cases in each chapter to further illustrate evidence-based care.

Fantastic Food & Why To Eat It!

by Lyn Sharkey

Did you know that good food can help us to be in a good mood? Everything that we put into our mouth has the power to make us feel better or worse – and we are not talking about a temporary sugar high! We are talking about feeling stronger and more energetic. Lyn collaborated with her eleven-year-old “god-phew” Nathan, to try out some recipes which young people will enjoy, and hopefully encourage them to get into the kitchen and develop a great relationship with whole food. “My nephew Nathan and I worked hard on trying out some recipes in this book that he enjoyed making and eating. So, we hope that you give us a chance to prove to you that eating more natural foods is not only healthier for you but is tasty too. We are not saying that you can’t have the odd takeaway – heaven forbid! However, if you eat better MOST of the time, you will discover that your body will work better for you, and that includes your brain and how you feel about yourself. We eat food at least three times every day, so shouldn’t we know more about what we are putting into our mouths? We challenge you to read this book and find out for yourself!” Lyn & Nathan

Field, Fork, Fashion: Bullock 374 and a Designer’s Journey to Find a Future for Leather

by Alice V Robinson

*From one of the Vogue Business 100 Innovators List - 2023 "[T]his wonderful project and book, executed with great charm and creativity, is an important message." Anya Hindmarch In this personal investigation into ethical and traceable leather, fashion designer Alice Robinson begins a ground-breaking journey into the origin story of leather and its connection to food and farming. As a fashion student, Alice started to question the material she worked with. Leather is universally acknowledged as a luxury material, from which desirable bags, shoes and clothing are made. But how much do we know about where it comes from? Alice’s questions led back to her childhood home in rural Shropshire, where she decided to buy Bullock 374 and follow its journey from a local farm to the abattoir, then to the butchery and finally to the tannery. The journey culminates with Alice’s own design practice as she creates a collection based on this single hide. In doing so, Alice would begin to see the bigger picture – and connect farm, food and fashion for the first time to understand the true meaning of provenance, value and beauty.
