Major Religions of the World
by Dr Marcus Bach Henry M. BullockWritten for the average reader, Major Religions of the World, which was first published in 1959, is a compact survey of the founders, the holy writings, the worship, and the basic beliefs of the major religions of the world—Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Judaism, Confucianism and Taoism, Shinto, Island, and Christianity.Dr. Marcus Bach’s approach is one of understanding and appreciation. He looks at each religion first through the eyes of a believer of that faith and then as an impartial observer pointing out the parallels in that religion and Christianity. The result is an unusually sensitive and provocative account.Included at the beginning of each study is a helpful glossary of terms. And informative and thought-provoking read!
Moral Man and Immoral Society: A Study in Ethics and Politics (Library of Theological Ethics Ser.)
by Reinhold NiebuhrMoral Man and Immoral Society, first published in 1932, is Reinhold Niebuhr’s important study in ethics and politics. Forthright and realistic, it discussed the inevitability of social conflict, the brutal behaviour of human collectives of every sort, the inability of rationalists and social scientists to even imagine the realities of collective power, and, ultimately, how individual morality can overcome social immorality.“Every thinking Christian must squarely face the major thesis of this book, or confess the impotence of his faith for a day when the dawn is lowering red.”—The Christian Century“No one can read it without gaining great value.”—Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science

I envy you for I would like to have again the chance of reading it for the first time.”—Lee Braxton, Mayor, Whiteville, North Carolina
Judith, Martyred Missionary of Russia: A True Story
by Nikita I. Saloff-AstakhoffFirst published in 1941, this is the incredible, true life story of a young Russian woman whose ministry ended in tragic death.“Exchanging silent glances, the murderers turned around and left the gruesome scene in the barn. Staring at the ground, they left without dropping a word....”Judith Weinberg, born of wealthy Russian Jewish parents in the early 1900’s, had embraced a faith that cost her everything—family, fiancé, home and friends. And in the end, it cost Judith her life—cruelly snuffed out by the deadly swords of the Russian Bolshevik Revolution.Judith by N. I. Saloff-Astakhoff is the incredible, true story of her life of sacrifice and service among the Russian people. It was the author’s privilege to have observed much of Judith’s life and Christian witness...and to have witnessed her untimely end. This book is dedicated to the men and women who discovered joyous new life through Judith Weinberg’s ministry, and others who will reap the rewards indirectly in years to come.
Between Heaven and Earth (Essay Index Reprint Ser.)
by Franz WerfelFirst published in its English translation during World War II in 1944, the first part of this book is composed of lectures originally delivered (in German) during the pre-war period, whilst the second part of the book represents author Franz Werfel’s present point of view, arriving at the difficult conclusion that “complete human detachment is the first psychological symptom of spirituality…”“The outstanding contribution of this book is its frank rejection of the materialistic philosophy and an emphasis in favor of the spiritual interpretation of life. There are beautiful passages written with characteristic artistry.”—Kirkus Review
Do you like to write? (Creative writing nº #1)
by Patricia Sánchez-CutillasThis is an essential creative writing manual for all those people who want to initiate themselves or deepen themselves in creative writing, and it is a delicious book for those who are book lovers. It's contents are: to give a soul to your character, add a morbid touch to our characters, our character's dreams, oneiric metaphor in our narration, the smell of our stories, narration through colours and the beasties. At the end of each chapter there are some exercises for you to put into practise what you have learnt, although I prefer to call them artistic election.
Pius XI: The Pope and the Man
by Zsolt AradiAn appealing and readable life of one of the greatest men of the early twentieth century: Pius XI as he appeared on the stage of history, and Pius the man as his closest friends knew and loved him.Pope Pius XI (born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti: 31 May 1857 - 10 February 1939) reigned as Pope from 6 February 1922 to his death in 1939. He was the first sovereign of Vatican City from its creation as an independent state on 11 February 1929. He took as his papal motto, “Pax Christi in Regno Christi,” translated “The Peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ.”Pius XI issued numerous encyclicals, and to establish or maintain the position of the Catholic Church, he concluded a record number of concordats, including the Reichskonkordat with Germany. During his pontificate, the longstanding hostility with the Italian government over the status of the papacy and the Church in Italy was successfully resolved in the Lateran Treaty of 1929.He canonized important saints, including Thomas More, Petrus Canisius, Konrad von Parzham, Andrew Bobola and Don Bosco. He beatified and canonized Thérèse de Lisieux, for whom he held special reverence, and gave equivalent canonization to Albertus Magnus, naming him a Doctor of the Church due to the spiritual power of his writings.Pius XI created the feast of Christ the King in response to anti-clericalism. He took a strong interest in fostering the participation of lay people throughout the Catholic Church, especially in the Catholic Action movement. The end of his pontificate was dominated by speaking out against Hitler and Mussolini and defending the Catholic Church from intrusions into Catholic life and education. He died on 10 February 1939 in the Apostolic Palace and is buried in the Papal Grotto of Saint Peter’s Basilica.

A Doctor at Calvary: The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ As Described by a Surgeon
by Dr Pierre Barbet The Earl of Wicklow‘We did not know; nobody has ever told us that!’ These were the words, spoken in tears, of Pope Pius XII on first reading passages from A Doctor at Calvary, Dr. Pierre Barbet’s scientific and reverent study of the Crucifixion of Christ. From an examination of the Holy Shroud of Turin—the authenticity of which Dr. Barbet accepts from medical evidence—a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s terrible agony is presented in language that cannot fail to move the heart. What kind and what degree of physical torture did Our Lord suffer on Calvary? What was the medical cause of His death? These are among the questions answered in A Doctor at Calvary, one of the most significant contributions to Christological science in modern times. Christ’s preliminary sufferings—the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, the scourging, the carrying of the cross—the wounds of the hands, in the feet, in the heart, the causes of the rapid death, and the entombment are recounted with the devotion and compassion of an ardent Christian and with a brilliant doctor’s accuracy of anatomical detail.‘Without doubt this is one of the most gripping and moving books to have been published in many a year.’—Harold C. Gardiner, S. J.‘As an aid to vivid viewing of the Passion, this book is peerless.’—Rev. John S. Kennedy, Balancing the Books‘…a profoundly moving study of the Passion.’—Commonwealth‘…a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s agony and death.’—Jubilee‘This volume is an outstanding example of how science can contribute not only to theology, but to solid Christian piety, and thus be an aid to love of Christ.’—The Voice‘This is a gripping and powerful book of the highest stature.’—Voice of St. Jude‘Sincere study of this book will enable us for the first time to understand what is behind the words: ‘Jesus suffered and died for us.”—America

Bilingualism and Bilingual Education: Politics, Policies and Practices in a Globalized Society
by B. Gloria Guzmán JohannessenThis volume presents a multinational perspective on the juxtaposition of language and politics. Bringing together an international group of authors, it offers theoretical and historical constructs on bilingualism and bilingual education. It highlights the sociocultural complexities of bilingualism in societies where indigenous and other languages coexist with colonial dominant and other prestigious immigrant languages. It underlines the linguistic diaspora and expansion of English as the world’s lingua franca and their impact on indigenous and other minority languages. Finally, it features models of language teaching and teacher education. This book challenges the existent global conditions of non-dominant languages and furthers the discourse on language politics and policies. It does so by pointing out the need to change the bilingual/multilingual educational paradigm across nations and all levels of educational systems.

Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet
by Courtney M. DorrollHow can teachers introduce Islam to students when daily media headlines can prejudice students' perception of the subject? Should Islam be taught differently in secular universities than in colleges with a clear faith-based mission? What are strategies for discussing Islam and violence without perpetuating stereotypes? The contributors of Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet address these challenges head-on and consider approaches to Islamic studies pedagogy, Islamaphobia and violence, and suggestions for how to structure courses. These approaches acknowledge the particular challenges faced when teaching a topic that students might initially fear or distrust. Speaking from their own experience, they include examples of collaborative teaching models, reading and media suggestions, and ideas for group assignments that encourage deeper engagement and broader thinking. The contributors also share personal struggles when confronted with students (including Muslim students) and parents who suspected the courses might have ulterior motives. In an age of stereotypes and misrepresentations of Islam, this book offers a range of means by which teachers can encourage students to thoughtfully engage with the topic of Islam.

The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education: Branches From The Same Tree
by Engineering Medicine National Academies of SciencesIn the United States, broad study in an array of different disciplines —arts, humanities, science, mathematics, engineering— as well as an in-depth study within a special area of interest, have been defining characteristics of a higher education. But over time, in-depth study in a major discipline has come to dominate the curricula at many institutions. This evolution of the curriculum has been driven, in part, by increasing specialization in the academic disciplines. There is little doubt that disciplinary specialization has helped produce many of the achievement of the past century. Researchers in all academic disciplines have been able to delve more deeply into their areas of expertise, grappling with ever more specialized and fundamental problems. Yet today, many leaders, scholars, parents, and students are asking whether higher education has moved too far from its integrative tradition towards an approach heavily rooted in disciplinary “silos”. These “silos” represent what many see as an artificial separation of academic disciplines. This study reflects a growing concern that the approach to higher education that favors disciplinary specialization is poorly calibrated to the challenges and opportunities of our time. The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education examines the evidence behind the assertion that educational programs that mutually integrate learning experiences in the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) lead to improved educational and career outcomes for undergraduate and graduate students. It explores evidence regarding the value of integrating more STEMM curricula and labs into the academic programs of students majoring in the humanities and arts and evidence regarding the value of integrating curricula and experiences in the arts and humanities into college and university STEMM education programs.
