The Composition of Sūrat Maryam: Rhetorical Analysis (Routledge Studies in the Qur'an)

by Michel Cuypers A.H. Mathias Zahniser

This book studies the composition or structure of Sūrat Maryam – the 19th sūra of the Qur’an – according to the principles of Semitic rhetoric.Sūrat Maryam has, in recent decades, been the subject of numerous studies by scholars of Islamology and Qur’anology. The general structure of the sūra, however, is not unanimously recognized among researchers, due to certain inconsistencies in rhyme and content of the text. This book takes a literary approach to the Qur’an, following the rules of a method well known in Qur’anic studies – rhetorical analysis. The book first analyses the sūra as it appears in the Qur’an today in the Muslim world, before focusing on a large section which shows a great literary unity, isolatable from the rest of the sūra. Through the assiduous and detailed reading of the sūra, its complex structure is gradually revealed. Other contexts are also considered: first, that of other sūras of the Qur’an, if they can shed light on the meaning of the sūra under study; and second, that of the Bible or the Jewish and Christian apocrypha. The book will be of particular interest to scholars working in Qur’anic studies and Biblical studies, and those focused on Christian–Muslim relations.

It was her job to shoot the photographs that revealed the circumstances of someone's final moments. Now in her debut book, The Darkroom, Hewitt takes us into the shadowy world of the crime scene photographer, and recounts remarkable tales, from murders to suicides, accidents to assassinations. In the tradition of Unnatural Causes, When the Dogs Don't Bark and All That Remains, this is a true crime book full of the wisdom that can be found in the darkness.

The Book of the People: How to Read the Bible

by A.N. Wilson

From renowned historian, biographer and novelist, A.N. Wilson, a deep personal, literary, and historical exploration of the Bible. In The Book of the People, A. N. Wilson explores how readers and thinkers have approached the Bible, and how it might be read today. Charting his own relationship with the Bible over a lifetime of writing, Wilson argues that it remains relevant even in a largely secular society, as a philosophical work, a work of literature, and a cultural touchstone that the western world has answered to for nearly two thousand years: Martin Luther King was "reading the Bible" when he started the Civil Rights movement, and when Michelangelo painted the fresco cycles in the Sistine Chapel, he was "reading the Bible." Wilson challenges the way fundamentalists—whether believers or non-believers—have misused the Bible, either by neglecting and failing to recognize its cultural significance, or by using it as a weapon against those with whom they disagree. Erudite, witty and accessible, The Book of the People seeks to reclaim the Good Book as our seminal work of literature, and a book for the imagination.

Diversiteit in de verpleegkunde

by P. Esterhuizen A.U. Kuckert-Pander

Applying the Rasch Model and Structural Equation Modeling to Higher Education: The Technology Satisfaction Model

by A.Y.M. Atiquil Islam

This book introduces the fundamentals of the technology satisfaction model (TSM), supporting readers in applying the Rasch model and structural equation modeling (SEM) – a multivariate technique – to higher education (HE) research. User satisfaction is traditionally measured along a single dimension. However, the TSM includes digital technologies for teaching, learning and research across three dimensions: computer efficacy, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Establishing relationships among these factors is a challenge. Although commonly used in psychology to trace relationships, Rasch and SEM approaches are rarely used in educational technology or library and information science. This book, therefore, shows that combining these two analytical tools offers researchers better options for measurement and generalisation in HE research. This title presents theoretical and methodological insights of use to researchers in HE.
