Social Work Education: Breaking New Grounds and Addressing New Challenges (SpringerBriefs in Advancing Social Work and Social Work Education)

by Carolyn Noble Annaline Caroline Sandra Keet

This book addresses the critical question of whether social work as an universal discipline is able to respond to new social challenges that arise from a changing world that pose new sets of challenges for people in precarious situations and create calamitous psychological burden for populations. These require critical skills that need to be developed through social work education in an environment where local and global social work ethics are fused and interrogated in our classroom spaces. There is a need to address the disjuncture between curriculum content, language of text used for instruction and local realities. As a universal discipline, social work education must play a transformative role and create an enabling environment that produces graduates that are able to respond to life experiences in a global social order while also being purposeful about centering local knowledges. Transforming social work education for a new era does not rely on singular issues but demands engagement around a multitude of issues that, if addressed, enhances the responsiveness of the discipline in different contexts. The authors, who work and teach across various settings, countries, contexts and cultures, address the role that social work ought to play during and after global events like the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and war and conflict. It speaks to a social work that acknowledges our interconnectedness with nature, offering an educational framework that centers the politics of sustainable development. Social work students come from communities where they, themselves, have different levels of access to educational spaces. The book also looks at new ways of delivering education content, making social work training accessible to a broader population. Among the topics covered: Learning Social Accountability Through Social Work Field Education Online Teaching, eCourses and Innovative Programmes in Social Work Distance Education Teaching Reproductive Justice in Social Work Education Social Work Peace Studies Social Work Values and Education Social Work Education: Breaking New Grounds and Addressing New Challenges addresses a range of issues that social work education needs to craft in the future and is designed to support students and professionals for practice, in placement, and teaching and curricula practices.

Integrating Computational Thinking Through Design-Based Learning: Strategies for Integration in Different Disciplines

by Mustafa Saritepeci Hatice Yildiz Durak

This book creates a theoretical framework to consider the integration of computational thinking (CT) into learning and teaching processes in different contexts from a design-based learning (DBL) perspective, and presents various intervention studies. The chapters each focus on a different aspect of CT integration through DBL, providing an overview and discussing the benefits of integrating CT into the curriculum. The book also discusses the design thinking process and how it can be used to promote CT, focusing on CT concepts and considering perspectives on how these concepts can be integrated into DBL activities. It also explores how artificial intelligence (AI)-based design-oriented learning activities can be used to develop students' CT skills, examines the information technology (IT) concept of pattern recognition, and provides examples of how this can be integrated into DBL activities. It presents practical examples on integrating CT into the teaching-learning process from a design-based learning perspective, summarizes approaches to assessing CT skills, and discusses them in the context of design-based learning. Lastly, this book also conducts a bibliometric analysis of publication and citation trends in computational thinking research conducted in design-based learning.

Jesuit Higher Educational Leadership: A Case Study of Universities in Asia

by Bernard Lee

This book sets out to examine the perceptions of the senior management, faculty members, and administrators of Jesuit leadership in four Asian Jesuit universities. The research question is framed as follows: What are the conceptualisation, collaboration with others, and challenges of Jesuit higher educational leadership? The researcher employed a two-stage research approach to gather the sample. The first stage involved qualitative research, including interviews and expert opinions, while the second stage comprised quantitative research in the form of surveys. This study was conducted across the Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea, and Japan. In total, 30 respondents participated in the interview over the Zoom platform, and 44 completed the online survey. The book made four significant contributions to scholarly literature. First, it conceptualised Jesuit higher educational leadership, which encompassed six features: interpersonal support, community building, selflessness, equality, integrity, and spirituality. Second, it empirically established a scale or a model of Jesuit higher educational leadership. Third, it empirically confirmed that collaboration with others was the mediator between the Jesuit higher educational leadership and the president's performance. Finally, it discovered Jesuit higher educational leaders' challenges, identifying conspicuous similarities and differences between the four universities. The structure of the book is organised into five chapters. Chapter 1 elucidates the background, the gap, the aim, the research questions, the significance of the study, and the organisation of the book. Chapter 2 presents a review of the relevant literature in conceptualising Jesuit higher educational leadership. Chapter 3 explains the study's design, the methodology, findings and analysis of interviews. Chapter 4 presents the methodology, the findings and analysis of the survey. Chapter 5 synthesises all the preceding chapters to respond to the research question posed in the introductory chapter.

Urban Forests, Climate Change and Environmental Pollution: Physio-Biochemical and Molecular Perspectives to Enhance Urban Resilience

by Hukum Singh

This book contributes significantly to the international literature by bringing forth a novel and comprehensive exploration of urban resilience in the face of climate change and environmental pollution. Its focus on integrating physiological, biochemical, and molecular dimensions distinguishes it from existing literature. The book offers several key contributions, including an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complex interactions within urban ecosystems. It includes cutting-edge insights that have not been extensively explored in existing literature, practical applications, and evidence-based strategies to enhance urban sustainability and resilience. The book has a global relevance to a diverse international readership and provides strategic guidance to policymakers and urban planners when making decisions to develop evidence-based strategies that cater to the specific challenges of cities. Urban forests play a critical role in enhancing the resilience of cities by providing numerous benefits, including improved air quality, reduced urban heat island effect, and enhanced biodiversity, ultimately improving urban health. Besides, urban forests are a crucial natural-based solution (NbS) to mitigate air pollution and climate change impacts in cities. However, in the face of climate change and environmental pressures, urban forests face significant challenges to their survival and functionality. This book explores the complex morpho-physio-biochemical and molecular changes that enable urban forests to flourish amidst climate change and environmental pollution. It examines how urban trees modulate their morphological structures, including root systems and physiological and biochemical functioning, and molecular alterations to withstand changing urban climatic and environmental conditions.
