Writing on the Wall: Writing Education and Resistance to Isolationism

by David S. Martins Xiaoye You Brooke R. Schreiber

The first concerted effort of writing studies scholars to interrogate isolationism in the United States, Writing on the Wall reveals how writing teachers—often working directly with students who are immigrants, undocumented, first-generation, international, and students of color—embody ideas that counter isolationism. The collection extends existing scholarship and research about the ways racist and colonial rhetorics impact writing education; the impact of translingual, transnational, and cosmopolitan ideologies on student learning and student writing; and the role international educational partnerships play in pushing back against isolationist ideologies. Established and early-career scholars who work in a broad range of institutional contexts highlight the historical connections among monolingualism, racism, and white nationalism and introduce community- and classroom-based practices that writing teachers use to resist isolationist beliefs and tendencies. “Writing on the wall” serves as a metaphor for the creative, direct action writing education can provide and invokes border spaces as sites of identity expression, belonging, and resistance. The book connects transnational writing education with the fight for racial justice in the US and around the world and will be of significance to secondary and postsecondary writing teachers and graduate students in English, linguistics, composition, and literacy studies. Les Français

by Jean-François Brière Julie Fette Laurence Wylie

Thoroughly revised and updated to reflect changes in French society over the last generation, and now illustrated with full-color photos, the Fourth Edition of Les Français retains hallmarks of the pioneering work in cultural anthropology that distinguished Laurence Wylie's First Edition—work that has long since helped make Les Français the most illuminating French-language introduction to French society and culture for the needs of North American students. The Fourth Edition also remains rooted in the comparative approach of previous editions, analyzing outlooks and practices that undergird the social fabric of France from the perspective of those approaching them from a North American background. Ranging from discussions of distinctively French perspectives on time, space, human nature, and the body, to norms of childhood socialization and family life, to the key elements and entities of social and cultural life, Les Français illustrates ways in which the French are "made not born," all while pointing up contradictions and paradoxes in French life and reflecting the greatly diversified demographic and social makeup of today's France.

Common Ground: Second Language Acquisition Theory Goes to the Classroom

by Florencia G. Henshaw Maris D. Hawkins

&“Common Ground is accessible to teachers at all levels yet firmly rooted in current questions of second language acquisition (SLA). One of its primary strengths is the authors themselves, both of whom are accomplished language teachers who understand the challenges and opportunities in communication-focused language teaching. Their experience, expertise, insight, and enthusiasm for language teaching translate into a book that is refreshingly practical for teachers, especially teachers who are striving to break from traditional drills commonly presented in textbooks. I hope this book finds its way into the hands of every language teacher who is looking for concrete examples of how SLA principles meet the realities of the classroom."—Stacey Margarita Johnson, Vanderbilt University

The Multilingual and Intercultural Puppet: An Innovative Approach to Learning Foreign and Second Langauges

by Paula G. Eleta Mariano Dolci

As the world becomes increasingly more interconnected and globalized, increasingly more families are seeking early (0-6 years) foreign and second language education, prompting educators and teachers to seek out age-appropriate tools which offer an innovative approach to early language learning (ELL). The Multilingual and Intercultural Puppet tries to answer two questions: How can we introduce children to foreign languages at an early age in a natural and also naturally playful way? And with which approach? This book presents a documented reflection that is rooted in concrete experiences which the authors have accumulated over the past twenty years of field-work, providing readers with many innovative yet practical and operational examples of how puppets have been used to facilitate ELL. Puppets, easily integrated into chilren’s natural play environment, represent a pedagogical tool par excellence for the teaching-learning of foreign languages. Using puppets, educators can create stimulating and enriching learning contexts, engaging children and moving them towards educational learning objectives, very naturally and through active and interactive play. Moreover, puppets, being puppets, can speak various languages, experience various life-events, and share these with young learners, be they homogeneous, heterogeneous, international, transcultural and/or intercultural groups. Indeed, “the language of puppets” is naturally multilingual and intercultural.

ESL Più cose da sapere sull'inglese

by Kenneth D. Bostian
