Prenatal Diagnosis of Fetal Osteopathologies

by Aniello Di Meglio

The main aim of this book is to help obstetricians and gynecologists recognize prenatal skeletal anomalies. Bone dysplasias alone represent about a third of all fetal malformations, some of which have different prognoses ranging from mild disabilities to severe or lethal ones. However, recognizing them prenatally is often difficult or impossible as they usually become apparent in the third trimester or even after birth. The majority of skeletal syndromes are extremely rare, making genetic testing necessary. The book is divided into sections, starting from the skull and ending with the feet, with each chapter discussing anomalies specific to that organ or bone deformation. It's a lengthy journey of 56 chapters that requires a precise and rigorous educational path to diagnose such diseases. However, by following the "Ariadne's thread" represented by the "characteristic sign" and the help of a geneticist, the difficult task becomes feasible.

Spirituality as a Resilience Factor in Life Crises: Viktor Frankl's Concept of the Mind and its Significance for Psychotherapy and Counseling (essentials)

by Gerhard Sprakties

This essential illustrates to psychotherapists and counselors the importance of spirituality for strengthening personal resilience. We live in often exhausting and fast-moving times. The 21st century began with a series of crises on a global scale: the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the financial crisis, climate change, the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Many media outlets today are true artists when it comes to describing unsuccessful lives. Anyone who is constantly preoccupied with negative news runs the risk of losing their inner mental balance. They are in danger of falling into a mood characterized by gloom and resignation. Experienced spiritual counselor and logotherapist Gerhard Sprakties shows how a deep spiritual foundation can help us to deal with these challenges in a constructive way.

Poxviruses (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology #1451)

by Nima Rezaei

Since the emergence of 2022’s monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak, it has been the heading of news and research articles that MPXV is being involving non-endemic areas after about its 80-year presence in endemic areas. Efforts are concentrated on understanding how MPXV has evolved to cause an epidemic. The book provides a comprehensive compendium of chapters on poxviruses in different domains. It concludes that the main problem we should deal with is not to address how MPXV has overcome the distance between non-endemic and endemic areas, but it is the non-cooperativity of logistics, research, and science in managing poxviruses’ outbreaks.

Fatal Denial: Racism and the Political Life of Black Infant Mortality (Reproductive Justice: A New Vision for the 21st Century #9)

by Annie Menzel

Fatal Denial argues that over the past 150 years, US health authorities’ explanations of and interventions into Black infant mortality have been characterized by the "biopolitics of racial innocence," a term describing the institutionalized mechanisms in health care and policy that have at once obscured, enabled, and perpetuated systemic infanticide by blaming Black mothers and communities themselves. Following Black feminist scholarship demonstrating that the commodification and theft of Black women’s reproductive bodies, labors, and care is foundational to US racial capitalism, Annie Menzel posits that the polity has made Black infants vulnerable to preventable death. Drawing on key Black political thought and praxis around infant mortality—from W.E.B. Du Bois and Mary Church Terrell to Black midwives and birth workers—this work also tracks continued refusals to acknowledge this routinized reproductive violence, illuminating both a rich history of care and the possibility of more transformative futures.

COVID-19 and the Right to Health in Africa (The COVID-19 Pandemic Series)

by Ebenezer Durojaye Roopanand Mahadew

This collection draws upon a range of thematic and regional case studies and uses the right to health as a normative framework to explore the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa.Drawing lessons from across the continent, the book discusses the challenges faced by African states seeking to ensure the availability, accessibility, and quality of health care in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the volume explores the impact of the pandemic on the right to health of vulnerable and marginalized groups, such as women, children, elderly persons with disabilities, refugees and asylum seekers, and people from disadvantaged communities. Due to the poor funding of the healthcare systems, access to health-related services was limited to these groups in many African countries, thereby leading to avoidable COVID-19-related deaths through shortages of vital supplies, including diagnostic tests, ventilators, and oxygen cylinders. Chapters in the volume also explore the contentious issues of vaccine mandates, equity, resource allocation, and the rights of healthcare providers during the pandemic. This collection will be of interest to students of public health, human rights, and the social sciences, as well as to academics and policymakers with an interest in the nexus between the COVID-19 pandemic and public health policy in Africa.

Sex and the Planet: What Opt-In Reproduction Could Do for the Globe (Basic Bioethics)

by Margaret Pabst Battin

What if human reproduction was always elective? A prominent bioethicist speculates about the possibilities—and the likely consequences. What would the world be like if all pregnancy was intended, not unintended as it is nearly half the time now? Considerably better, Margaret Pabst Battin suggests in Sex and the Planet, a provocative thought experiment with far-reaching real-world implications. Many of the world&’s most vexing and seemingly intractable issues begin with sex—when sperm meets egg, as Battin puts it—abortion, adolescent pregnancy, high-risk pregnancy, sexual violence, population growth and decline. Rethinking reproductive rights and exposing our many mistaken assumptions about sex, Sex and the Planet offers an optimistic picture of how we might solve these problems—by drastically curtailing unintended pregnancies using currently available methods. How we see this picture—as recommendation, prediction, utopian fantasy, totalitarian plot, hypothetical conjecture, or realistic solution—depends to a great degree on which of thirteen problematic assumptions we maintain, assumptions Battin works to identify and challenge. Taking on sensitive topics like abortion and rape and religious issues around contraception, she shows how a fully informed, nonideological approach could defuse much of the friction such issues tend to generate. Also, in her attention to male contraception and the asymmetry of female and male reproductive control, she pulls in the 50 percent of the human race—those with Y chromosomes—largely left out of discussions of reproductive health. Sex and the Planet, finally, takes a global view, inviting us to consider a possible—even plausible—reproductive future.

A Last Supper of Queer Apostles: Selected Essays

by Pedro Lemebel

A galvanizing look at life on the margins of society by a crowning figure of Latin America's queer counterculture who celebrated &“melodrama, kitsch, extravagance, and vulgarity of all kinds&” (Garth Greenwell) in playful, performative, linguistically inventive essays, now available in English for the first timeA Penguin Classic&“I speak from my difference,&” wrote Pedro Lemebel, an openly queer writer and artist living through Chile&’s AIDS epidemic and the collapse of the Pinochet dictatorship. In brilliantly innovative essays—known as crónicas—that combine memoir, reportage, fiction, history, and poetry, he brought visibility and dignity to sexual minorities, the poor, and the powerless. Touching on everything from Che Guevara to Elizabeth Taylor, from the aftermath of authoritarian rule to the daily lives of Chile&’s locas—a slur for trans women and effeminate gay men that he boldly reclaims—his writing infuses political urgency with playfulness, realism with absurdism, and resistance with camp, and his AIDS crónicas immortalize a generation of Chileans doubly &“disappeared&” by casting each loca, as she falls sick, in the starring role of her own private tragedy. This volume brings together the best of his work, introducing readers of English to the subversive genius of a literary activist and queer icon whose acrobatic explorations of the Santiago demimonde reverberate around the world. For more than seventy-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 2,000 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Histopathology of Bone and Joint Infections

by Mohamed Fethi Ladeb Soumaya Rammeh Rommani

This book focuses on histopathological features of bone and joint infections. Bone and joint infection is a serious health problem that has increased in the past two decades. Their diagnosis requires the collaboration of physicians, radiologists, microbiologists and pathologists. Symptoms of these lesions are nonspecific often resulting in a delayed diagnosis. Radiology is needed for the diagnosis of bone and joint infection, determining the severity and extent of disease. The radiological diagnosis of these infections is challenging because of multiple overlaps with tumor etiologies.Effective antibiotic treatment relies on the detection of the causative organisms and its their susceptibility testing. However, culture is time consuming. Besides, administering antibiotics prior to performing surgery or biopsy, the low virulent bacteria, tissues contaminations and sampling errors limit the reliability of bone culture. Histology is a key tool for the diagnosis of boneand joint infection by evaluating the tissue reaction pattern caused by the pathogen. The histopathological diagnosis is based on the evaluation of the tissue changes and the leukocyte infiltration pattern. The purpose of this book will be to report in detail the histopathological features of bone and joint infections with emphasis on key diagnostic features and differential diagnoses. It will also highlight special stain and other ancillary tests that can be used as an aid in the histological diagnosis.

Neuroendocrine Regulation of Mammalian Pregnancy and Lactation (Masterclass in Neuroendocrinology #15)

by David R. Grattan Paula J. Brunton

Adaptations to maternal physiology are required for a successful pregnancy outcome. These changes are primarily orchestrated by the mother’s brain and involve multiple neuroendocrine systems. For this book, the editors have gathered internationally recognized experts who have contributed to the major advances in our understanding of different aspects of the neuroendocrine regulation of mammalian pregnancy and lactation. The book begins with a discussion of how pregnancy is recognized and maintained and the role of the placental hormones in supporting key adaptations required for a successful pregnancy. The next few chapters focus on the neuroendocrine adaptations that occur during pregnancy in some key regulatory processes to ensure a sufficient supply of energy and nutrients, protect the fetus from potentially harmful maternal stress hormones, and prepare mammals for birth, milk production, lactation and motherhood. Finally, our current understanding of how the significant peripartum hormonal changes contribute to the mother’s cognitive function and mood is examined. This book provides a broad overview of the finely orchestrated neuroendocrine adaptations that occur in pregnancy and lactation and discusses how such changes contribute to maximizing the likelihood of a positive outcome for mother and infant. Importantly the evidence for involvement of neuroendocrine dysregulation in some pregnancy-related complications, such as preterm birth and perinatal mood disorders is also highlighted. In addition to addressing fundamental mechanisms in the regulation of mammalian pregnancy and lactation, the book includes the most recent advances in the field made possible by utilizing the latest innovative research technologies. Moreover, it provides opinions on optimal experimental approaches, relates findings from experimental animal models with those from humans, and outlines the direction and opportunities for future research in this arena. It is an essential resource for undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and early career researchers embarking upon their journey in the fields of neuroendocrinology, endocrinology, reproductive biology or behavioural neuroscience. It also provides a valuable synopsis for established neuroendocrine researchers and educators, especially those whose interest transcends the nexus between neuroendocrinology and reproductive biology. This is the 15th volume in the International Neuroendocrine Federation (INF) “Masterclass in Neuroendocrinology” series, which aims to illustrate the highest standards and to encourage the use of the latest technologies in basic research and hopes to provide inspiration for further exploration into the exciting field of neuroendocrinology.
