Madness, Psychiatry, and Empire in Postcolonial Literature (Palgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine)

by Chienyn Chi

Madness, Psychiatry, and Empire in Postcolonial Literature provides a comparatist interrogation of empire through archives of history, science, and literature. The book analyzes Aimé Césaire’s Discourse on Colonialism to shed light on Césaire’s critique of psychological and medical discourses of the colonized’s mind. The book argues that the discourse of psychiatry, psychology, and psychoanalysis has erased the context of power in global histories of empire. Through the book’s chapters, Chi analyzes Lu Xun’s “A Madman’s Diary,” Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, and Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions to assert that the misapprehension of madness should not automatically be accepted as the history of an isolated Western culture but rather that of the history of imperialism—a globalizing process that silences alternative cultural conceptions of the mind, of madness, and of behavior, as well as different interpretations of madness.

On the Fractal Language of Medicine (Fractional Order Thinking in Exploring the Frontiers of STEM)

by Bruce J. West W. Alan Mutch

On the Fractal Language of Medicine bridges a very clear gap among the knowledge gained over the last 20 years in the physical and life sciences on network theory, organ synchronicity and communication, the understanding of fractal signatures in health and disease and the importance of fractional calculus in integrating these concepts. The authors opine that the field of medicine has not appreciated this hard-won knowledge and has suffered greatly as a result. This book addresses this perceived deficiency by introducing medical researchers, clinicians, residents, first-year medical students and members of allied fields to the work of the so-called hard sciences. It seeks to facilitate effective communication between empiricists and theorists by making interdisciplinary efforts to explain complex mathematical concepts to physicians and, equally important, to elucidate complex medical concepts to physicists or mathematicians. This book will be of great interest to medical students, professionals and academics, as well as students and researchers of applied mathematics, especially those interested in fractional calculus and fractals.

Diagnostiek van alledaagse klachten: Bouwstenen voor klinisch redeneren

by T.O.H. de Jongh H. De Vries B. J. Knottnerus P.A.J. Keurlings J. Damen M. E. Reinders

Geriatrics Models of Care: Bringing 'Best Practice' to an Aging America

by Heidi White Marie Boltz Michael L. Malone Jonny Macias Tejada

Following the success of the previous edition, the second edition of Geriatrics Models of Care is the definitive resource for systems-based practice improvement for the care of older adults. Several new models of care have been published in the last eight years, new outcomes have emerged to better understand the impact of existing models, and with the rise of the Age-Friendly Health Systems movement, promoting organized efforts to prepare our health care settings for older individuals is of more importance than ever. The second edition is organized based on the practice setting along a continuum of care: hospital, transitions from hospital to home, outpatient settings, and the emergency department. This book also highlights long-term care models, which is an important part of the continuum of care for older Americans. Further, this edition features models that address the needs of vulnerable populations. This new section will describe a spectrum of programs for older adults who have Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease. Other models describe best practices for older adults undergoing surgery or those who want to remain functioning independently in their home. A defining feature of this book is that each chapter follows a standard template: 1) the challenge which led to the model; 2) the patient population served; 3) core components of the intervention; 4) the role of interdisciplinary health professionals; 5) evidence to support the intervention; 6) lessons learned in the implementation and dissemination of the model; 7) implications for family caregivers, and communities (particularly underserved and diverse communities); and 8) how each model will provide care across the continuum during an entire episode of care. In addition, each chapter features a “call out” box with practical tips for implementing the model.

Endoscope-controlled Transcranial Surgery: Advancing the Standard of Intraoperative Visualization - Vol. 52 (Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery #52)

by Waleed Abdelfattah Azab

This book addresses the fully endoscopic or endoscope-controlled transcranial surgery. As a surgical philosophy, it entails that the whole procedure is performed through a tailored keyhole craniotomy under the exclusive control of the rigid endoscope without the use of other visualization tools like surgical microscopes or exoscopes. Despite the well-known extreme superiority of the endoscopic view, especially at deep surgical targets, performing surgery under pure endoscopic control is currently adopted by few neurosurgeons across the globe. The main objective of this book to shed the light on this minimally-invasive surgical methodology and demonstrate its advantages and practical do ability. Many internationally renowned expert neurosurgeons thoroughly describe how these procedures are performed using detailed descriptions of the surgical techniques and high-quality illustrations and exquisite intraoperative endoscopic images. Endoscope-controlled Transcranial Surgery will be a valuable guide to practicing neurosurgeons in raising the bar of intraoperative visualization, with a consequent great improvement of safety and efficacy of the procedure performed. Furthermore, the book will serve as a starting point for more widespread utilization and dispersion of this surgical philosophy in the future.

Transcription factors in blood cell development (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology #1459)

by Tilman Borggrefe Benedetto Daniele Giaimo

This book describes transcription factors in the context of hematopoietic development and reveal mechanistic insights how they orchestrate specific gene expression patterns. Several examples from lymphoid and myeloid lineages are given as well as particular examples of leukemia fusion proteins that contain a part of a transcription factor. In the given chapters covering each one particular example, the function of transcription factors is characterized in normal as well as leukemic contexts. New technologies such as ChIP-Seq or RNA-Seq, that make use of genome-wide sequencing, have shown that such master regulators of blood cell development often work in combinatorial fashion and, when dysregulated, results in leukemogenesis. This book is not only intended for experts but it should also be a useful resource for younger scientists or scientists from other disciplines, who may use this book as a stimulating starting point for further discoveries and/ or translational endeavors.
