Hedwig Conrad-Martius’ Ontological Phenomenology (Women in the History of Philosophy and Sciences #5)

by James G. Hart

This work is an introduction to the totality of the metaphysical philosophy of nature of Hedwig Conrad-Martius (1888-1966). Her own training and inclination as a realist phenomenologist enables a unique perspective on central issues in modern and contemporary (twentieth century) theoretical biology and physics. Here we find novel theories of, e.g., space and time, as well as development and evolution. This work is thus of interest to anyone studying the history of the phenomenological movement as well as religious cosmology. The philosophical basis for this cosmology is Conrad-Martius’ “realontology” which is a phenomenological account of the essence of appearing reality. The full elaboration of the modes of appearing of what is real enables the unfolding of an analogical theory of “selfness” within the order of nature culminating in an account of the coming to be of humans, for whom there is an essentially distinctive world- and self-manifestation for which she reserves the term “spirit.” Key to her position is the revival of ancient metaphysical themes in new transformed guises, especially potentiality and entelechy.Nature’s status, as a self-actuation of world-constituting essence-entelechies, places Conrad-Martius in the middle of philosophical-theological discussions of, e.g., the hermeneutical mandate of demythologization as well as the nature of evolution. Of special interest is her insistence on both nature’s self-actuating and evolving powers and a robust theory of creation.

Hands: A Pictorial Archive from Nineteenth-Century Sources (Dover Pictorial Archive Ser.)

by Jim Harter

More than just a five-digit grasping appendage, the extraordinary human hand is capable of a virtually infinite range of expression. Here are over 1,100 images of hands, specially assembled by a noted graphic designer in response to the growing demand for inexpensive and royalty-free art depicting hands.Chosen for diversity and style as well as usability, these images were carefully culled from thousands of pages of nineteenth-century European and American books and periodicals, some of them very rare. Many of the images represent the height of the wood engraver's art -- and as artists and designers know, for many purposes wood engravings are far superior to photographs. Here are large hands, small hands, lovely hands, and ugly hands. There are hands resting and active and hands writing, sewing, demonstrating scientific experiments, using tools, performing magic tricks, applying first aid, playing parlor games, and even casting hand shadows on the wall. Hands are displayed to demonstrate palmistry, anatomy, and sign language, or are simply poised to reveal superb form and dignity. In response to the enormous demand, hands with pointing fingers appear in an abundance of sizes, shapes, and shades, and are more or less stylized or realistic to suit every need.A glance through this magnificent collection will suggest a multitude of royalty-free uses to any artist, designer, or crafter, including collage, decoupage, and advertising art. Whenever the decorative, expressive, or symbolic potential of a hand is needed, you will want to turn to this inexpensive yet comprehensive treasury.

Harter's Picture Archive for Collage and Illustration

by Jim Harter

Men in strange flying machines ... Mysterious veiled women ... Exotic animals, birds, insects, plants ... Eerie faces ... Wonderful technological devices ... Unusual landscapes, cityscapes, moonscapes ... Children, couples, Victorian buildings, and interiors ... Over 300 authentic and strikingly visual nineteenth-century engravings selected from rare periodicals, books, and catalogs, dating mostly from 1870 to 1900, and valuable for collagists, commercial and graphic artists, designers, illustrators, and others. These rare pictures, both real and imagined, of relics, rituals, people, animals, and geometric shapes and designs provide much-needed material for collage and illustrations -- material of the highest quality that is difficult if not impossible to find elsewhere. There are 25 full-page scenes of historic, natural, and city vistas that are ideally suited as background for collages and other projects. All of the pictures are sharply defined and clearly printed on one side of each page to allow for optimal use of their lines and textures and to eliminate the possibility of "show-through."The illustrations were chosen by the well-known collagist Jim Harter, whose work has appeared in TheNew York Times, New York magazine, and other publications. Mr. Harter's artistry is evident in his selection of images that -- besides being useful as decorative or illustrative elements -- have a strong visual impact and symbolic potential. Line engravings offer unique textural qualities, and as Mr. Harter writes, they "have a dream-like quality that other material cannot duplicate." Mr. Harter's introduction gives a brief history of collage as well as instructions on techniques and materials and an overview of his own perspective on the art. To illustrate the various ways these nineteenth-century cuts can be used, six collages composed entirely of images from this book are included.

The Gentlemen's Book of Etiquette, an

by Cecil B. Hartley

This book provides RULES FOR THE ETIQUETTE TO BE OBSERVED IN THE STREET, AT TABLE, IN THE BALL ROOM, EVENING PARTY, AND MORNING CALL; WITH FULL DIRECTIONS FOR POLITE OR RESPONDENCE, DRESS, CONVERSATION, MANLY EXERCISES, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Man was not intended to live like a bear or a hermit, apart from others of his own nature, and, philosophy and reason will each agree with me, that man was born for sociability and finds his true delight in society. Society is a word capable of many meanings, and used here in each and all of them. Society, par excellence; the world at large; the little clique to which he is bound by early ties; the companionship of friends or relatives; even society tete a tete with one dear sympathizing soul, are pleasant states for a man to be in. All in all this is a great book on etiquette. A great place to learn the rules of etiquette.
