Just Another War

by Gelder Meyer

Just Another War, by Gelder Meyer, is a tale of good overcoming evil. The characters meet each other, if seemingly accidentally, just before the time of the First Crusade. The characters have the ability to communicate with each other via ESP and by combining their talents, they overcome the evil force. When they meet again, it is in their next incarnation. Their ESP ability is honed to the degree that they could communicate with others of their choice and they are now in the very early years of the twenty-first century. The world is on the threshold of utter destruction, whereupon these three are able to help their group to be among the powers to start a new world. GELDER MEYER was born in the Dutch Indies. At three years old, he was a Japanese prisoner of war with his mother, his brothers, and his sister. He grew up in Indonesia, left when he was eleven years old, and then went to Holland. At eighteen, he went to live and work in Colombia, South America for a few years, before returning to live in Holland, where he and his wife have two grown sons and five grandchildren.

A Rope of Thorns (The Hexslinger Trilogy #2)

by Gemma Files

A demonic showdown approaches in “the powerful sequel” to A Book of Tongues full of “potent mythology, complex characters, and dollops of creeping horror” (Publishers Weekly). New Mexico, 1867. When the hexslinger Rev. Asher E. Rook sacrificed his partner and lover Chess Pargeter to the Mayan goddess Ixchel, he became Ixchel’s consort. And with that newfound power, Asher founded “Hex City,” the first place in all of human history where magicians can live and work together safely. But this tenuous peace is threatened by Chess, newly reborn with terrible powers of his own, and bent on revenge over Asher’s betrayal. Chess is no mere hex any longer. His very presence has torn a crack in the world, remaking everything around him. And now he’s killing his way toward Asher, dragging Pinkerton agent-turned-outlaw Ed Morrow along with him. And as the cycle of Chess’s power approaches its climax, Chess, Morrow, and a young spiritualist named Yancey Colder—caught up in Chess’s vendetta—will all have to shed yet more blood as they face down his mysterious patron demon, known only as the Enemy, along with every other enemy Chess has made along the way.

Experimental Film

by Gemma Files

The award-winning author of the Hexslinger Series &“explores the world of film and horror in a way that will leave you reeling&” (Jeff VanderMeer, author of the Southern Reach Trilogy). Former film teacher Lois Cairns is struggling to raise her autistic son while freelancing as a critic when, at a screening, she happens upon a sampled piece of silver nitrate silent footage. She is able to connect it to the early work of Mrs. Iris Dunlopp Whitcomb, the spiritualist and collector of fairy tales who mysteriously disappeared from a train compartment in 1918. Hoping to make her own mark on the film world, Lois embarks on a project to prove that Whitcomb was Canada&’s first female filmmaker. But her research takes her down a path not of darkness but of light—the blinding and searing light of a fairy tale made flesh, a noontime demon who demands that duty must be paid. As Lois discovers terrifying parallels between her own life and that of Mrs. Whitcomb, she begins to fear not just for herself, but for those closest to her heart. Winner of the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel &“One of the standout horror novels of 2015 . . . From an author who has already established herself as one of the genre&’s most original and innovative voices, Experimental Film is a remarkable achievement.&” —Los Angeles Review of Books &“Experimental Film represents the next, significant contribution to what is emerging as one of the most interesting and exciting bodies of work currently being produced in the horror field. Every film, Lois Cairns writes, is an experiment. The same might be said of every novel. This one succeeds, wildly.&” —Locus &“Experimental Film is sensational. When we speak of the best in contemporary horror and weird fiction, we must speak of Gemma Files.&” —Laird Barron

Five occult families reunite to fulfill their dark fate in this “colorful, powerful, and charismatic” collection of stories by the award-winning author (NPR). Devize, Glouwer, Rusk, Druir, Roke—these are the clans who make up the notorious Five-Family Coven. After the survivors fled Scotland, they settled in North Ontario in order to keep their secrets—and their ambitions—alive. Four hundred years later, the Coven’s last descendants are scattered far and wide, making their way as psychics, ex-possessees, defrocked changeling priests, shamans for hire, body-stealing witches, and monster-slaying nuns. They are the bastard children of a thousand evil angels. But now they are assembling for a final confrontation.

&“A vivid, haunting mix of horror and fantasy woven together through a complex fugue of short stories&” from the award-winning author of Kissing Carrion (Entertainment Weekly). One of Canada&’s most acclaimed horror writers, Gemma Files presents a mosaic of interconnected stories about interconnected families. After fleeing Scotland, five clans settled in the fictional town of Dourvale in northern Ontario. Known as the Five-Family Coven, they are the descendants of witches and witch-children, none of whom were spared persecution in their native country. Now shamans, spellcasters, singers, and thieves, the members of the Devize, Druir, Glouwer, Roke, and Rusk families survive by trading their occult powers and talents—though few can really afford their price . . . &“What makes We Will All Go Down Together so riveting isn&’t its ideas or imagery, as richly atmospheric and detailed as they are. It&’s the author&’s voice. Colorful, powerful, and charismatic, her characters are rendered in bold strokes and poignant nuances. . . . Her book is a short-story collection, true, but it also works as a dark, fractured mosaic of a novel. The Declaration

by Gemma Malley

It's the year 2140 and Longevity drugs have all but eradicated old age. A never-aging society can't sustain population growth, however; which means Anna should never have been born. Nor should any of the children she lives with at Grange Hall. The facility is full of boys and girls whose parents chose to have kids -- called surpluses -- despite a law forbidding them from doing so. These children are raised as servants, and brought up to believe they must atone for their very existence. Then one day a boy named Peter appears at the Hall, bringing with him news of the world outside, a place where people are starting to say that Longevity is bad, and that maybe people shouldn't live forever. Peter begs Anna to escape with him, but Anna's not sure who to trust: the strange new boy whose version of life sounds like a dangerous fairy tale, or the familiar walls of Grange Hall and the head mistress who has controlled her every waking thought? Chilling, poignant, and endlessly though-provoking, "The Declaration" is a powerful debut that will have readers agonizing over Anna's fate until the very last page.
