Becoming a Visible Man

by Jamison Green

The entry to this book is the opening of a college lecture. Green guides a dialogue with students, leading them to a new way of perceiving sex vs. gender vs. sexual orientation. At a later point, he uses a computer analogy: hardware is sex (the body), gender is software (the soul or heart or mind), then the operating system is the congruence or lack of between the two. What if your hardware is a PC running Windows but your software is all MAC based? How long do you suffer in silence before taking action to have them be the same, work together, and feel whole? Green skillfully weaves through multiple related topics of transsexuality, with the focus on female to male, a rapidly growing percentage of the community. He includes current history of the movement to create community rather than isolated individuals, a community far behind its opposite of male to female people. He cites the slower advances in surgical techniques, plus the unwillingness of the "System" to grant them entry. Green, like many others, is not satisfied with the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association's Standards of Care, which sets the "rules" and timelines of processes that most Gender Identity Clinics follow. Green found himself not only transitioning into a male body, but into an activist role. He writes about issues related to hormones, explains surgery options and techniques, social and family ramifications, fears and facing discrimination and bigotry, emotions, sexuality, the push-pull desires of just blending in and being a "guy in the crowd" vs. a spokesman and advocate to further advance transsexual acceptance into mainstream society.

You Could Live a Long Time: Are You Ready?

by Lyndsay Green

Are you ready to live a long time, or do you dread it? Recent medical advances mean we could live longer, but doesn’t guarantee the quality of that life. In the words of one senior, "We’re not living longer, we’re dying longer." The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Getting older doesn’t have to mean living a limited life. Author Lyndsay Green has interviewed forty successful seniors to talk not just about the problems of old age but its strength and benefits. These seniors were from all walks of life and from all over the country, living in Victoria, Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal, Kingston and Halifax, aged 75 to 100. They have been identified as the self-reliant seniors we would like to be and they share their wisdom and strategies for independent and happy living. The book combines their advice with cutting edge research, to arrive at specific suggestions for what we should be doing now to prepare for old age, and includes resources to help us implement the advice, including:Money isn’t everything, and won’t cure ill-health or loneliness.Cultivate new friendships now.To keep your dignity, give up your pride. You need a work plan, instead of a retirement planTo keep a home, consider leaving your house. If you push too hard to stay young you’ll get old faster. The unique message is that we should not try to avoid old age. Instead of trying to do the impossible to stay forever young, Green comes to the radical conclusion that in order to get as much as possible out of our old age we will need to embrace it.

The Way of Baseball: Finding Stillness at 95 MPH

by Shawn Green Gordon McAlpine

Shawn Green’s career statistics can be found on the backs of baseball cards in shoe boxes across America: 328 home runs, 1,071 RBIs, .282 career batting average, All-Star, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger. . . . But numbers tell only part of the story. His path to success was as grounded in philosophical study as in ballpark wisdom. Striving to find stillness within the rip-roaring scene of Major League Baseball—from screaming fans to national scandals— Green learned to approach the sport with a clear mind. In the tradition of Phil Jackson’s Sacred Hoops,Green shares the secrets to remaining focused both on and off the field, shedding light on a signature approach to living by using his remarkable baseball experiences to exemplify how one can find full awareness, presence, and, ultimately, fulfillment in any endeavor. Following his development from inconsistent rookie to established All-Star to aging veteran,The Way of Baseball illustrates the spiritual practices that enabled him to “bring stillness into the flow of life.” Requiring mastery of perspective and continual management of ego, the game of baseball afforded Green the opportunity to explore his potential as more than just a ballplayer. A treasure of practical wisdom and an intimate look at what it really means to “let go,” The Way of Baseball illuminates the creative possibilities within us all.
