Until one afternoon she comes home to find Steve packing a bag and her comfortable life suddenly moves out of bounds. Her best friend Ros, a law firm boss with an appetite for life, laughter and (just the right amount of) wine, immediately leaps in to help Jackie back to her feet but soon finds herself feeling second best to Jackie's other priorities.Their barmaid/friend/wine protégé Jay is back home with her mum at nearly 30. The Nolympics: One Man's Struggle Against Sporting Hysteria

by Nicholas Lezard

Nicholas Lezard loved London. Then the London 2012 Olympics came along ...Suddenly his beloved city was invaded by über-people in branded sportswear who had contorted their bodies into odd shapes in order to run a bit faster, or throw things a bit further. Not to mention armies of reptilian brand-managers, chancers and corporate cheerleaders all wanting to cash in, as a blameless piece of the East End was turned (at tear-inducing cost) into one huge folly. In The Nolympics Nicholas Lezard gives us the perfect antidote to Olympics fever with a hilarious blow-by-blow account of how he survived its highs and lows, triumphs and soul-destroying boredom. It is a book for anyone who would rather sit in the dark watching TV than ever wave a flag, who was last to be picked for PE, or who just feels that somewhere along the way the Spirit of the Games was smothered by wads of money. It is the only Olympic souvenir you'll ever need.

The Inner Structure of Tai Chi: Mastering the Classic Forms of Tai Chi Chi Kung

by Juan Li Mantak Chia

Explores the deep, internal work necessary for the effective practice of tai chi• Reveals the Taoist principles that gave birth to the Yang-style tai chi forms• Shows how tai chi can circulate powerful healing energies through the bodyTaoist adepts developed tai chi as both a martial art and a way to cultivate their physical body, energy body, and spirit body. Like all Taoist exercises, its main purpose is to form a connection to the basic energy that is the foundation of all life: chi. Until the beginning of the twentieth century, tai chi was considered a secret practice that was passed down only within a closely knit structure of family and loyal disciples. Despite its widespread growth in popularity as a martial art and health exercise, many of its underlying internal practices remain unknown. The Inner Structure of Tai Chi explores the deep, internal work necessary for the effective practice of tai chi. Designed for practitioners at every level, the book contains step-by-step illustrated instructions for mastering the 13 forms of early Yang-style tai chi, also known as Tai Chi Chi Kung. The authors demonstrate the relationship of the inner structure of tai chi to the absorption, transformation, and circulation of the three forces that animate all life--the Universal force, the Cosmic force, and the Earth force--revealing the principles and practices necessary to receive the full spectrum of physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits that tai chi can bring.

The National Games and National Identity in China: A History (Routledge Focus on Sport, Culture and Society)

by Liu Li Fan Hong

The history of China’s National Games reflects both the transformation of elite sport in China and wider Chinese society. This is the first book to describe the origins and development of the National Games through their dynamic relationship with Chinese politics, nationalism and identity in the modern era. Looking specifically at the role of the National Games in China’s changing social, political and economic circumstances from 1910 to 2009, this book uncovers how the National Games reflected the shifts in state-led nationalist ideologies within three historical eras: the late Qing Dynasty and Republican China (1910-1948), the early People’s Republic of China (1959-1979) and the People’s Republic of China in the post-1980s (1983–2009). It also examines how the National Games were reformed to serve China’s Olympic Strategy in the context of globalization and commercialization from the 1980s onwards. Full of original insights into archive material, each chapter sheds new light on the social, cultural and political significance of this sporting mega-event in the shaping of modern China. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the politics, history and culture of China.

Motion Analysis of Soccer Ball: Dynamics Modeling, Optimization Design and Virtual Simulation (SpringerBriefs in Applied Sciences and Technology)

by Ying Li

The intelligent sports analysis of a soccer ball (also known as football, football ball, or association football ball) requires accurately simulating its motion and finding the best design parameters. Employing classic mechanics, this book establishes a fundamental framework for the soccer ball multi-body dynamics modeling, virtual prototype simulation and optimization design. It presents 3D virtual prototypes to predict the soccer ball trajectory for soccer players and trainers. Five typical case studies have addressed in the kinematics and dynamics simulations of soccer ball projectile motion, free kick, and corner kick in the virtual environment. The research on multi-body dynamics models provides a useful method for engineers and scientists to investigate the spatial kinematics and dynamics performances of various balls, such as soccer ball, gulf ball, American football, etc. The book is significant to guide undergraduate and graduate students from multi-disciplines to study system dynamics and optimization design.

The Psychology of Closed Self-Paced Motor Tasks in Sports (Routledge Psychology of Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity)

by Ronnie Lidor

In practice settings, competitions, and games, athletes are often required to perform an arsenal of motor tasks in dynamic and challenged sporting environments, where they have to respond without having enough time to prepare themselves for the act. However, in many sport activities athletes also perform closed self-paced motor tasks – tasks that take place in a relatively stable and predictable environment, where there is adequate time to prepare for their execution. Among these tasks are free-throw shots in basketball, putting in golf, serving in tennis, and bowling. In these tasks, performers are able to plan their actions in advance. They can activate a plan, a strategy, a protocol, or a procedure – what we term a ritual behavior. Effective rituals are usually achieved with a high degree of consistency. That is, either deliberately or subconsciously they become an integral part of the act itself. The Psychology of Closed Self-Paced Motor Tasks in Sports explores those plans, procedures, protocols, strategies, and techniques that aim at facilitating the performance and learning of closed self-paced motor tasks. Included in the instructional-psychological routines discussed in this book are pre-performance routines, focusing attention, motor imagery, enhanced expectancies, autonomy support, gaze strategies, self-talk, and periodization. The routines discussed in the book are evidence-based. Based on updated reviews of laboratory and field inquiries on the discussed instructional-psychological routines, practical implications are given for those professionals who teach closed self-paced motor tasks, including coaches, instructors, and sport psychology consultants.

Case Studies in Adapted Physical Education: Empowering Critical Thinking

by Lauren Lieberman Martin Block Nathan Murata Samuel Hodge

The case studies in this book provide readers with opportunities to think critically about real-life situations that arise when working with children with varied abilities and disabilities, as well as opportunities to question and explore and to empower themselves in the process. The case scenarios illustrate actual experiences faced by a diverse group of general and adapted physical educators representing various contexts from self-contained APE classes and inclusive GPE (elementary, middle, and high school; urban, rural, and suburban) to youth sports, community recreation, and health club settings. When reading the book, pre-service and in-service teachers will be exposed to the issues facing physical educators as changes in federal law further mandate the inclusion of students with disabilities in general physical education classes and after-school sports. Identifying with the situations and characters in the cases will encourage readers to explore such issues as diversity and disability, attitude and ethics, behavior management and conflict resolution, and inclusion strategies. Questions following each case prompt readers to identify the critical issues and how the physical education professionals dealt with those issues, and then determine whether they would have handled the issues in the same way. Analyzing and discussing the cases will enable readers to formulate strategies for dealing with related issues and better prepare them to provide safe, satisfying, and successful physical activity experiences to individuals with varied abilities.

In Physical Education and Sports for People with Visual Impairments and Deafblindness: Foundations of Instruction, Lauren Lieberman, Paul Ponchillia, and Susan Ponchillia contribute compelling resources for these efforts and for these professionals, as well as for recreational therapists, physical therapists, teachers of students with visual impairments or deafblindness, and anyone concerned with the full inclusion of children and adults who are visually impaired in athletics and the other essential activities of life.
