Deals on the Green

by David Rynecki

A fun, inspirational look at corporate America's favorite pastime No matter how sophisticated business becomes, nothing can replace the golf course as a communication hub. It's where up-and-comers can impress the boss and where CEOs can seal multibillion-dollar deals. It's no coincidence that many of the most admired people in business-Jack Welch, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Sandy Weill-always carved out time in their busy schedules for golf. Deals on the Green takes us inside the gates of elite courses like Augusta National and Pebble Beach to reveal how important golf really is. It tells entertaining stories about the people who rely on golf to drive their success in business, from John D. Rockefeller a century ago to Donald Trump today. Some of those you'll meet:* Wayne Huizenga, the founder of Blockbuster, who was so golf obsessed that he created his own personal course in Florida. * Jeff Immelt, CEO of General Electric, who won Jack Welch's blessing for the big job after proving himself on the golf course. * Stan O'Neal, CEO of Merrill Lynch, who became the most powerful black executive in America-and a late bloomer at golf. A perfect gift for dads, grads, bosses, and avid golfers of all ages, Deals on the Green will make you think about golf, and business, in a whole new way.

Deals on the Green

by David Rynecki

No matter how sophisticated the tools become-the e-mails and teleconferencing, the BlackBerries and PowerPoints-golf remains the true communications hub of American business In the history of American business there have been more deals consummated on the golf course than in any boardroom or five-star restaurant. It's no accident that executives from J. D. Rockefeller to Jack Welch have made time in their busy schedules for eighteen holes. Deals on the Green takes a fresh look at the interesting worlds of golf and business. It's not a "how to win business" instructional, but it does offer lessons about what is required to succeed in golf and in business-namely friendship, imagination, tenacity, multitasking, guts, passion, and compassion. And it shares great inside stories about the leaders whose devotion to and respect for the game have contributed to their success in business. Financial journalist David Rynecki takes us inside the gates of elite courses such as Augusta National and Pebble Beach to reveal how the wealthy and powerful really behave-or misbehave. He lets us in on the keys to mixing business and pleasure, the best way to swing a nine iron in front of your boss, and even what to do if you happen to slice it.

The Routledge Handbook of Coach Development in Sport (Routledge International Handbooks)

by Steven B. Rynne Clifford J. Mallett

The Routledge Handbook of Coach Development in Sport is a comprehensive text that underscores the importance of learning and context for those who sculpt the environment in which people of all ages develop in and through sport.Coaches and those responsible for the development of coaches are best positioned as both learners and facilitators of learning. As sport becomes more globalised, the concomitant professionalisation of coaches necessitates ongoing learning and development to embrace new knowledge and understanding. Moreover, contemporary coach development presents as a wicked problem, in that it continues to evolve, it is contextually bound, and there is no single or obvious way to approach it. Problematically, there is often limited assistance available to support coaches and coach developers in their ongoing development. As such, this book provides a truly international reference point that brings together leading scholars and practitioners from across the globe to provide an overview of the theories and practices of coaches and coach developers that are impacting the quality of sporting environments. Therefore, this book is an important reference for researchers, scholars, and practitioners alike in the fields of Sport Coaching, Coach Development, Sport Development, Sport for Development, Physical Education and related disciplines.

Till the End

by CC Sabathia Chris Smith

A raw, compelling memoir of baseball, family, fame, addiction, and recovery, by one of the most beloved baseball players of his generation How does it feel to be born with enormous gifts, in a life shadowed by tragedy? What does it mean when the gift that opens the world for us is not enough to stop us from losing the things we love? And what new gifts do we find in that loss? Baseball had been CC Sabathia&’s life since he was a kid in gritty, baseball-obsessed Vallejo, California. He was a star by the time he was a preteen and a professional athlete when he was still a teenager. Everything he knew about how to be a person—an adult, a husband and father, a leader—he learned in rhythm with the baseball season, the every-fifth-day high-intensity spotlight of a starting pitcher, all while dealing with one of the sport&’s most turbulent eras: racism in a sport with diminishing black presence; the era of performance-enhancing drugs; and the increasing tension between high-value contracts and sports owners who moved players around like game pieces. But his biggest struggle was with his own body and mind: Buoyed his whole life by talent and a fiery competitive spirit, CC found himself dealing with the steady and eventually alarming breakdown of his own body and his growing addiction in a world that encouraged and enabled it.Till the End is the thrilling memoir of one of the most beloved players in the game, a veteran star of the sport&’s marquee team during its latest championship era. It&’s also a book about baseball—about the ins and outs of its most important and technical position and its evolution in this volatile era. But woven within it is the moving, universal story of resilience and mortality and discovering what matters.

Golf's Iron Horse: The Astonishing, Record-Breaking Life of Ralph Kennedy

by John Sabino

So many works of golfing history focus on the greats: the best players, the most prestigious championships, the hardest courses, and the like. But most avid golfers are average players, relishing in the joy of the sport itself. In Golf’s Iron Horse, celebrated golf writer John Sabino chronicles the previously untold story of Ralph Kennedy, a golf amateur whose love of the game set him on par to play more courses than anyone before.A founding member of Mamaroneck, New York’s prestigious Winged Foot Golf Club, Kennedy had long been an avid golfer when he met Charles Leonard Fletcher in 1919. When the Englishman told Kennedy that he had played more than 240 courses in his lifetime, Kennedy took it as a challenge and became determined to play more.In a feat that caused the New York Sun to declare him "golf’s Lou Gehrig” in 1935, Kennedy succeeded in beating Fletcher’s record, and then some. He played golf on more than 3,165 different courses in all forty-eight states, nine Canadian provinces, and more than a dozen different countries during his forty-three year love affair with the game. In addition to the 3,165 unique courses he played, the unrelenting Ralph also played golf a total of 8,500 times over his lifetime, the equivalent of teeing it up every day for twenty-three straight years. Lou Gehrig’s seventeen years in professional baseball pales in comparison. This intriguing story includes details of the special conditions under which he was able to play the Augusta National Golf Club and the unique circumstances of his visits to Pebble Beach and the Old Course at St. Andrews. Perfect for golf aficionados, Golf’s Iron Horse will inspire every reader to tee off at a new course.

The Caribbean Coral Reef: A Record of an Ecosystem Under Threat

by William K. Sacco

This book is a visual tour of Caribbean coral reefs between 1968 and 1978. They are the world’s second largest coral reef community and the most threatened. The Caribbean Coral Reef: A Record of an Ecosystem Under Threat offers a priceless historical record made by a photographer who set out to document the major reef species when those reefs were at their prime. Today, coral reefs are under threat as never before and, sadly, most of what is shown in the book's photographs is now gone forever. It is only by comparing the images in this book with what we see now that we are able to fully recognize what we have lost. With its stunning photography and precise, accurate scientific information, this book offers students of coral reefs a wealth of information about this rich, fragile ecosystem. It is also written accessibly for non-academic visitors to the Caribbean reef or anyone interested in the earth’s creatures. Many of the invertebrates will be unfamiliar to most people, and the author reveals fascinating insights into these otherworldly creatures and their lifestyles. Enjoy this field guide to the reefs that were, and savor the beauty of this vanishing environment and its organisms.

The Cardturner: A Novel About a King, a Queen, and a Joker

by Louis Sachar

From Louis Sachar, New York Times bestselling author and winner of the Newbery Medal for HOLES, comes the young adult novel THE CARDTURNER, an exploration of the human condition. How are we supposed to be partners? He can't see the cards and I don't know the rules! The summer after junior year of high school looks bleak for Alton Richards. His girlfriend has dumped him to hook up with his best friend. He has no money and no job. His parents insist that he drive his great-uncle Lester to his bridge club four times a week and be his cardturner-whatever that means. Alton's uncle is old, blind, very sick, and very rich. But Alton's parents aren't the only ones trying to worm their way into Lester Trapp's good graces. They're in competition with his longtime housekeeper, his alluring young nurse, and the crazy Castaneda family, who seem to have a mysterious influence over him. Alton soon finds himself intrigued by his uncle, by the game of bridge, and especially by the pretty and shy Toni Castaneda. As the summer goes on, he struggles to figure out what it all means, and ultimately to figure out the meaning of his own life. Through Alton's wry observations, Louis Sachar explores the disparity between what you know and what you think you know. With his incomparable flair and inventiveness, he examines the elusive differences between perception and reality-and inspires readers to think and think again.

El funcionamiento general del mundo

by Eduardo Sacheri

Playing On

by Neil Sachse Michael Sexton

At 24, Neil Sachse was an Aussie Rules star on the rise. The burly South Australian had torn through the ranks to become one of the most sought-after players in the country. Then, in only his second game in the top flight, playing for Footscray, a front-on collision left Neil a quadriplegic. It remains the most catastrophic injury to any player in the history of the VFL/AFL competition. However, it’s not the injury, but what Neil went on to achieve that has come to define him.

Cricket, Kirikiti and Imperialism in Samoa, 1879–1939 (Palgrave Studies in Sport and Politics)

by Benjamin Sacks

This book considers how Samoans embraced and reshaped the English game of cricket, recasting it as a distinctively Samoan pastime, kirikiti. Starting with cricket’s introduction to the islands in 1879, it uses both cricket and kirikiti to trace six decades of contest between and within the categories of ‘colonisers’ and ‘colonised.’ How and why did Samoans adapt and appropriate the imperial game? How did officials, missionaries, colonists, soldiers and those with mixed foreign and Samoan heritage understand and respond to the real and symbolic challenges kirikiti presented? And how did Samoans use both games to navigate foreign colonialism(s)? By investigating these questions, Benjamin Sacks suggests alternative frameworks for conceptualising sporting transfer and adoption, and advances understandings of how power, politics and identity were manifested through sport, in Samoa and across the globe.
