Practical Bayesian Inference: A Primer for Physical Scientists.

by Coryn A. L. Bailer-jones

Science is fundamentally about learning from data, and doing so in the presence of uncertainty. This volume is an introduction to the major concepts of probability and statistics, and the computational tools for analysing and interpreting data. It describes the Bayesian approach, and explains how this can be used to fit and compare models in a range of problems. Topics covered include regression, parameter estimation, model assessment, and Monte Carlo methods, as well as widely used classical methods such as regularization and hypothesis testing. The emphasis throughout is on the principles, the unifying probabilistic approach, and showing how the methods can be implemented in practice. R code (with explanations) is included and is available online, so readers can reproduce the plots and results for themselves. Aimed primarily at undergraduate and graduate students, these techniques can be applied to a wide range of data analysis problems beyond the scope of this work. Written in an informal yet precise style, suitable for a wide audience from a range of backgrounds in the physical sciences Promotes the Bayesian approach as a general framework for solving problems, but also makes comparison with frequentist methods Describes how methods can be applied in practice to the readers' own problems, so it is not simply a recipe book The R code from the book is available freely online, allowing readers to see how the theory is actually implemented and reproduce the plots and results in the book

Strategic Management of Innovation Networks

by Müge Özman

Suitable for a one- or two-semester course for undergraduate and graduate students, this interdisciplinary textbook explains the diverse aspects of innovation and social networks, which occupy a central place in business and policy agendas. Its unified approach presents networks as nested systems that can span organisations, industries, regions, and markets, giving students a holistic perspective and reducing the amount of effort required to learn the theoretical framework for each layer. With engaging real-world examples, the text also provides a practical guide on how to manage networks to increase innovation and improve performance. Topics covered include forming teams to foster creativity, selecting partners and leveraging partnerships for learning, managing organisational change, and sponsoring technologies in communities. Students will learn the metrics used in social network analysis and how they are interpreted and applied. Suggested reading lists and online resources offer opportunities for further review and practice. Introduces students to the main concepts involved in networks and innovation Provides up-to-date coverage of the latest developments Uses both quantitative and qualitative tools

Principles of Economics Sixth Edition

by Robert Frank Ben S. Bernanke Kate Antonovics Ori Heffetz

Authors Bob Frank, Ben Bernanke, and introducing Kate Antonovics from the University of California San Diego and Ori Heffetz from Cornell University, present a coherent short list of core principles in introductory economics and reinforce them by illustrating and applying each in numerous contexts. With engaging questions, explanations and exercises, the authors help students relate economic principles to a host of everyday experiences such as going to the ATM or purchasing airline tickets. Throughout this process, the authors encourage students to become "economic naturalists:" people who employ basic economic principles to understand and explain what they observe in the world around them.

The Earth’s Inner Core: Revealed by Observational Seismology

by Hrvoje Tkalčić

The inner core is a planet within a planet: a hot sphere with a mass of one hundred quintillion tons of iron and nickel that lies more than 5000 kilometres beneath our feet. It plays a crucial role in driving outer core fluid motion and the geodynamo, which generates the Earth's magnetic field. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive review of past and contemporary research on the Earth's inner core from a seismological perspective. Chapters cover the collection, processing and interpretation of seismological data, as well as our current knowledge of the structure, anisotropy, attenuation, rotational dynamics, and boundary of the inner core. Reviewing the latest research and suggesting new seismological techniques and future avenues, it is an essential resource for both seismologists and non-seismologists interested in this fascinating field of research. It will also form a useful resource for courses in seismology and deep Earth processes.
