Jervis's Insects as Natural Enemies: Practical Perspectives

by Ian C.W. Hardy Eric Wajnberg

There has been a dramatic increase in theoretical and practical studies on insect natural enemies over the last decades. The appeal of insect predators and, in particular, parasitoids, as research animals derives from the relative ease with which many species may be cultured and experimented on in the laboratory, the simple life-cycles of most parasitoid species, and the increasing demand for biological pest control as a key component of the integrated pest management approach. There is now a very substantial literature on insect natural enemies and thus a great need for a general text that enquiring students or research workers can use in deciding on approaches and techniques that are appropriate to the study and evaluation of such insects. This book fulfils that demand. It is a considerably updated and expanded version of a previous best-seller and provides an account of major aspects of the biology of predators and parasitoids, punctuated with information and advice on which experiments or observations to conduct and, importantly, how to carry them out. Guidance is provided, where necessary, on the most recent further literature that may need to be consulted on given topics. While researchers can now refer to several books on parasitoids and predators, Jervis’s Insects as Natural Enemies is unique in emphasising practicalities. It is aimed at students and professionals working in universities and both government and commercial institutes in the fields of integrated pest management, agriculture, horticulture and forestry, as well as those interested in fundamentals of behavioural, population, community and evolutionary ecology.

Three days before Chr/$tma.g-Melrose Plant, Jury's aristocratic and unofficial assistant, arrives at Spinney Abbey, now home to a well-known critic. Among the assembled snowbound guests he meets: Iady Assington ("underneath her expensive gown there was a typist trying to get out"); Beatrice Sleight, a genre writer v/nose hair combs gave that tumbled look of one just preparing for bed ("Melrose imagined she usually was"); the tall, brooding type, the painter Edward Parmenger, who "put Melrose in mind of Heathcliff." When they all assemble in the dining room, oak paneled and candlelit with mullioned windows of rose and amethyst #ass, Lady Assington'announces, "I think we should have a murder." by Oliver Soden

'An inspired an original tale ... Jeoffry is the greatest cat in the English language' - Hilary Mantel'Simply unforgettable ... one of the most beautiful and haunting books of recent times' - Alexander McCall Smith'A heart-lifting delight; I absolutely loved it. A triumph' - Alexandra HarrisJeoffry was a real cat who lived 250 years ago, confined to an asylum with Christopher Smart, one of the most visionary poets of the age. In exchange for love and companionship, Smart rewarded Jeoffry with the greatest tribute to a feline ever written.Prize-winning biographer Oliver Soden combines meticulous research with passages of dazzling invention to recount the life of the cat praised as ‘a mixture of gravity and waggery’. The narrative roams from the theatres and bordellos of Covent Garden to the cell where Smart was imprisoned for mania. At once whimsical and profound, witty and deeply moving, Soden’s biography plays with the genre like a cat with a toy. It tells the story of a poet and a poem, while setting Jeoffry’s life and adventures against the roaring backdrop of eighteenth-century London.

Jennie

by Douglas Preston

When Professor Hugo Archibald finds an orphaned baby chimp in Africa, it seems like the most normal thing in the world for him to bring the brave little toddler home to Boston to live with his wife and two small children. Jennie quickly assimilates into mid-sixties suburban life, indulging in the rambunctious fun one would expect from a typical American kid of her generation: riding breakneck on her own tricycle, playing with Booger the kitten and a Barbie doll, fighting with her siblings over use of the TV, and--as a teenager--learning to drink, smoke pot, and curse just like her human peers. Attaining an impressive command of American Sign Language, Jennie absorbs a warped vision of heaven from a neighborhood minister, experiences first-hand the bureaucracies of the American health-care system, and even has her own fifteen minutes of fame. Jennie's story--hilarious, poignant, and ultimately tragic--introduces to American literature one of the most endearing animal heroines in modern fiction.

Jellyfish Blooms

by Kylie A. Pitt Cathy H. Lucas

Jellyfish are one of the most conspicuous animals in our oceans and are renowned for their propensity to form spectacular blooms. The unique features of the biology and ecology of jellyfish that enable them to bloom also make them successful invasive species and, in a few places around the world, jellyfish have become problematic. As man increasingly populates the world's coastlines, interactions between humans and jellyfish are rising, often to the detriment of coastal-based industries such as tourism, fishing and power generation. However we must not lose sight of the fact that jellyfish have been forming blooms in the oceans for at least 500 million years, and are an essential component of normal, healthy ocean ecosystems. Here many of the world's leading jellyfish experts explore the science behind jellyfish blooms. We examine the unique features of jellyfish biology and ecology that cause populations to 'bloom and bust', and, using case studies, we show why jellyfish are important to coastal and ocean ecosystem function. We outline strategies coastal managers can use to mitigate the effects of blooms on coastal industries thereby enabling humans to coexist with these fascinating creatures. Finally we highlight how jellyfish benefit society; providing us with food and one of the most biomedically-important compounds discovered in the 20th century.
