GLUE: Transforming Leadership in a Hybrid World

by John Dore

The adoption of remote, hybrid and flexible working is the new normal. But like the old normal, no one seems very happy. The solution requires a different type of leadership – one that unites, transforms and elevates performance. Leadership that creates glue. With employee engagement, productivity and personal ties on the wane, leaders urgently need to refocus on harnessing relationships, making their organisations more humane, and finding new ways to engage and unleash talent. To do that, the single, most impactful thing leaders can do is to create and nurture an intangible, yet essential, factor called glue. So, this book sets out some ideas about glue: where to look for it, how to use it and, most importantly, how to cultivate glue amongst your most valuable people. It explores the approach of some unusual leaders, and of firms transformed through the ‘organisational advantage’ of smartly configuring and harnessing talent. Using stories from firms such as Alibaba, Apple, Barclays, Sky, Husqvarna Group, HSBC, Space X, Zopa and Richer Sounds, the book shows how leaders can shape the effectiveness of teams, reimagine the workplace, and reinvigorate their business through the talents, ideas and energy of their firm’s best people. This book is for anyone who has a genuine interest in leading others with impact and wants to better unite, transform and elevate their business. Whatever your role, sector or seniority, this book sets out a distinctive vision for the firm and shows the profound impact you can make through creating and nurturing glue.

Glow Kids: How Screen Addiction Is Hijacking Our Kids - and How to Break the Trance

by Nicholas Kardaras

We've all seen them: kids hypnotically staring at glowing screens in restaurants, in playgrounds and in friends' houses--and the numbers are growing. Like a virtual scourge, the illuminated glowing faces--the Glow Kids--are multiplying. But at what cost? Is this just a harmless indulgence or fad like some sort of digital hula-hoop? Some say that glowing screens might even be good for kids--a form of interactive educational tool. Don't believe it. In Glow Kids, Dr. Nicholas Kardaras will examine how technology--more specifically, age-inappropriate screen tech, with all of its glowing ubiquity--has profoundly affected the brains of an entire generation. Brain imaging research is showing that stimulating glowing screens are as dopaminergic (dopamine activating) to the brain's pleasure center as sex. And a growing mountain of clinical research correlates screen tech with disorders like ADHD, addiction, anxiety, depression, increased aggression, and even psychosis. Most shocking of all, recent brain imaging studies conclusively show that excessive screen exposure can neurologically damage a young person's developing brain in the same way that cocaine addiction can. Kardaras will dive into the sociological, psychological, cultural, and economic factors involved in the global tech epidemic with one major goal: to explore the effect all of our wonderful shiny new technology is having on kids. Glow Kids also includes an opt-out letter and a "quiz" for parents in the back of the book.

A Glossary of Applied Linguistics

by Alan Davies

Applied Linguistics is still a growing field. Key texts and handbooks have appeared in recent years and international applied linguistics conferences and professional associations occur regularly. While Applied Linguistics continues to attract new entrants and to generate new strands of research, there is a need for a clear and concise map of the field. This is the purpose of the Glossary. The author, Alan Davies, is a well-established, well-published authority on applied linguistics. Not a typically dry dictionary, Dr. Davies infuses the alphabetical entries with a touch of humor and thought-provoking context creating an up-to-date, useful, and coherent view of applied linguistics. The Glossary compiles the most ubiquitously used terms in applied linguistics and teacher-training literature. It takes a wide-ranging view of the field, drawing not only on linguistics but including psychology, sociology, education, measurement theory, speech therapy, translation, and language planning. Other features include:*numerous cross-references to key terms;*an introduction, which discusses the difficulty of defining applied linguistics; and*a brief reading list of key text. The primary market is master's student in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, and TESL/TEFL. Undergraduate students, particularly in language fields and in education will also find it helpful, as well as language teachers who have not themselves followed Applied Linguistics courses and who are interested in finding out about the field.

The Glory of God and Paul (New Studies in Biblical Theology #Volume 58)

by Robert A. Peterson Christopher W. Morgan

The apostle Paul's theology of glory has its foundations in the biblical drama of creation, fall, redemption, and consummation, and in the identity of Jesus as revealed in his teachings, life, death, and resurrection. The triune God, who is intrinsically glorious, graciously and joyfully displays his glory, largely through his creation, human image-bearers, providence, and redemptive acts. God's people respond by glorifying him. God receives glory and, through uniting his people to Christ, he shares his glory with them—all to his eternal glory. Christopher Morgan and Robert Peterson explore the glory of God in Paul's letters with regard to the Trinity, salvation, the resurrection, the new covenant, the church, eschatology, and the Christian life. God intends his glory to impact many areas of believers' lives: their gradual transformation "from glory to glory" (2 Cor 3:18) occurs as they meditate and reflect on the splendor of the Lord.

Gloria Rising

by Ann Cameron

Sometimes it's the little things that are really big, Gloria learns when her mom sends her to the grocery store for an onion. Because of the onion, she meets Dr. Grace Street, an astronaut. Especially since it's only the beginning of fourth grade and already Gloria has enormous teacher troubles! The Dragon of Doom, a.k.a. Mrs. Yardley, doesn't seem to like Gloria, or anyone else for that matter-except for Billy Watkins, the class bully. Things go from bad to worse when Billy gets the whole class in trouble. Then a surprise visit from Dr. Street reminds Gloria that she knows how to rise above her difficulties. In this sincere and funny follow-up to Glorias Way, Gloria learns that a little self-confidence can help her accomplish big things.

The Glocalization of Early Childhood Curriculum: Global Childhoods, Local Curricula (Routledge Research in Early Childhood Education)

by Philip Hui Li Jennifer J. Chen

With empirical evidence and theoretical critique, this book unveils the myths and debates (e.g., child-centeredness versus teacher-directedness) about early childhood curricula, revealing their unique social, cultural, and historical roots. Analyzing globally advocated early childhood curricula and ideologies, such as the developmentally appropriate practice, the child-centered approach, constructivism, and globalized childhood, this book argues that the direct adoption of these contextually bound approaches in local environments may be inappropriate if social and cultural compatibility is lacking. The authors then examine how early childhood curricula may be implemented in a hybrid form. Featuring case studies from American and Chinese contexts, this book offers insights and recommendations for the future development and redeployment of early childhood curriculum studies and practices in a post-truth era. This volume serves as a valuable resource for scholars and students of early childhood education and comparative education, as well as for key education stakeholders.

Glocalization and the Development of a Hybrid Leadership Model: A Study of Chinese University Presidency (Routledge Research in Educational Leadership)

by Qingyan Tian

Through in-depth interviews with the presidents of major Chinese universities, this text explores the changing demands on leaders in Higher Education in the wake of globalization, and develops a contemporary model of Hybrid Leadership. Glocalization and the Development of a Hybrid Leadership Model examines the leadership philosophies and practices of Chinese university presidents and presents new insights and perspectives on the meaning and practice of leadership in a global era. Drawing on data from a unique methodological process which integrates Western and Eastern approaches, chapters foreground the experiences of leaders in higher education to demonstrate how they perceive and balance diverse and potentially conflicting local and global demands, and ensure effective leadership by combining leadership philosophies and practices from local and global contexts. Ultimately, this informs the development of new model of leadership characterized by the hybridization of the global and local at the contextual and personal levels, and marked by global competency, multiple cultural and sectoral mindsets, and geographically adaptable skill sets. Challenging and enriching the existing theories of leadership for higher education, this text will be of interest to scholars, post-graduate students and academics in the fields of educational leadership, international and comparative education, higher education, and leadership studies. It will also be of interests to the practitioners of leadership in general and higher education leadership in particular.
