Scalarization and Separation by Translation Invariant Functions: with Applications in Optimization, Nonlinear Functional Analysis, and Mathematical Economics (Vector Optimization)

by Christiane Tammer Petra Weidner

Like norms, translation invariant functions are a natural and powerful tool for the separation of sets and scalarization. This book provides an extensive foundation for their application. It presents in a unified way new results as well as results which are scattered throughout the literature. The functions are defined on linear spaces and can be applied to nonconvex problems. Fundamental theorems for the function class are proved, with implications for arbitrary extended real-valued functions. The scope of applications is illustrated by chapters related to vector optimization, set-valued optimization, and optimization under uncertainty, by fundamental statements in nonlinear functional analysis and by examples from mathematical finance as well as from consumer and production theory. The book is written for students and researchers in mathematics and mathematical economics. Engineers and researchers from other disciplines can benefit from the applications, for example from scalarization methods for multiobjective optimization and optimal control problems.

Liability-Driven Investment: From Analogue to Digital, Pensions to Robo-Advice (Wiley Finance)

by Dan Tammas-Hastings

Understand the investment template that dominates the pension industry Liability-Driven Investment is the practitioner’s guide to this increasingly popular investment template. Already the dominant framework for pension schemes in Europe and the UK, the LDI market is expected to grow significantly with the shift from Defined Benefit to Defined Contribution, and then into Digital Asset Management — or Robo-Advice. With an aging population and significant under-saving globally, more and more finance professionals will need to know how to work within and around the LDI framework; this book provides clear explanations for the framework’s usefulness and growing popularity to help practitioners find their bearings in and around the LDI space. The ultimate goal of LDI is to move beyond simple asset value maximisation and ensure that investors have sufficient funds to pay liabilities. This informative guide digs into that basic premise to show the various mechanisms, guidelines and practices that make up the framework’s “working parts.” Discover the optimal investment strategies in multiple assets classes Understand the key characteristics of the instruments used, including bonds, interest rate derivatives, and inflation linked products Learn why pension companies and individual investors are moving toward LDI Explore the ways in which the explosive growth of Robo-Advice will change retail investment Finance professionals have long been accustomed to shifting landscapes — it is taken as a given that prevailing thought and attendant practices will change over time — but the rapid expansion of LDI has taken many by surprise. Having already been established as the dominant framework for pensions, it is clear that the emphasis on LDI will only continue to grow. Liability-Driven Investment tells you what you need to know in order to work effectively with LDI.

Socio-Economic Segregation in European Capital Cities: East Meets West (Regions and Cities)

by Tiit Tammaru Maarten Van Ham Szymon Marcińczak Sako Musterd

Growing inequalities in Europe are a major challenge threatening the sustainability of urban communities and the competiveness of European cities. While the levels of socio-economic segregation in European cities are still modest compared to some parts of the world, the poor are increasingly concentrating spatially within capital cities across Europe. An overlooked area of research, this book offers a systematic and representative account of the spatial dimension of rising inequalities in Europe. This book provides rigorous comparative evidence on socio-economic segregation from 13 European cities. Cities include Amsterdam, Athens, Budapest, London, Milan, Madrid, Oslo, Prague, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn, Vienna and Vilnius. Comparing 2001 and 2011, this multi-factor approach links segregation to four underlying universal structural factors: social inequalities, global city status, welfare regimes and housing systems. Hypothetical segregation levels derived from those factors are compared to actual segregation levels in all cities. Each chapter provides an in-depth and context sensitive discussion of the unique features shaping inequalities and segregation in the case study cities. The main conclusion of the book is that the spatial gap between the poor and the rich is widening in capital cities across Europe, which threatens to harm the social stability of European cities. This book will be a key reference on increasing segregation and will provide valuable insights to students, researchers and policy makers who are interested in the spatial dimension of social inequality in European cities. Crusading and Chronicle Writing on the Medieval Baltic Frontier: A Companion to the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia

by Marek Tamm Linda Kaljundi Carsten Selch Jensen

The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia, written by a missionary priest in the early thirteenth century to record the history of the crusades to Livonia and Estonia around 1186-1227, offers one of the most vivid examples of the early thirteenth century crusading ideology in practice. Step by step, it has become one of the most widely read and acknowledged frontier crusading and missionary chronicles. Henry's chronicle offers many opportunities to test and broaden the new approaches and key concepts brought along by recent developments in medieval studies, including the new pluralist definition of crusading and the relationship between the peripheries and core areas of Europe. While recent years have produced a significant amount of new research into Henry of Livonia, much of it has been limited to particular historical traditions and languages. A key objective of this book, therefore, is to synthesise the current state of research for the international scholarly audience. The volume provides a multi-sided and multi-disciplinary companion to the chronicle, and is divided into three parts. The first part, 'Representations,' brings into focus the imaginary sphere of the chronicle - the various images brought into existence by the amalgamation of crusading and missionary ideology and the frontier experience. This is followed by studies on 'Practices,' which examines the chronicle's reflections of the diplomatic, religious, and military practices of the christianisation and colonisation processes in medieval Livonia. The volume concludes with a section on the 'Appropriations,' which maps the reception history of the chronicle: the dynamics of the medieval, early modern and modern national uses and abuses of the text.

Afterlife of Events

by Marek Tamm

Recently, we have witnessed a rearticulation of the traditional relationship between the past, present and future, broadening historiography's range from studying past events to their later impact and meaning. The volume proposes to look at the perspectives of this approach called mnemohistory, and argues for a redefinition of the term 'event'.

Juri Lotman - Culture, Memory and History: Essays in Cultural Semiotics

by Marek Tamm

This volume brings together a selection of Juri Lotman’s late essays, published between 1979 and 1995. While Lotman is widely read in the fields of semiotics and literary studies, his innovative ideas about history and memory remain relatively unknown. The articles in this volume, most of which are appearing in English for the first time, lay out Lotman’s semiotic model of culture, with its emphasis on mnemonic processes. Lotman’s concept of culture as the non-hereditary memory of a community that is in a continuous process of self-interpretation will be of interest to scholars working in cultural theory, memory studies and the theory of history.

The Horse that Leaps Through Clouds: A Tale of Espionage, the Silk Road and the Rise of Modern China

by Eric Enno Tamm

On July 6, 1906, Baron Gustaf Mannerheim boarded the midnight train from St. Petersburg, charged by Czar Nicholas II to secretly collect intelligence on the Qing Dynasty's sweeping reforms that were radically transforming China. The last czarist agent in the so-called Great Game, Mannerheim chronicled almost every facet of China's modernization, from education reform and foreign investment to Tibet's struggle for independence. On July 6, 2006, writer Eric Enno Tamm boards that same train, intent on following in Mannerheim's footsteps. Initially banned from China, Tamm devises a cover and retraces Mannerheim's route across the Silk Road, discovering both eerie similarities and seismic differences between the Middle Kingdoms of today and a century ago.Along the way, Tamm offers piercing insights into China's past that raise troubling questions about its future. Can the Communist Party truly open China to the outside world yet keep Western ideas such as democracy and freedom at bay, just as Qing officials mistakenly believed? What can reform during the late Qing Dynasty teach us about the spectacular transformation of China today? As Confucius once wrote, "Study the past if you would divine the future," and that is just what Tamm does in The Horse that Leaps Through Clouds.

The Danish Medieval Laws: the laws of Scania, Zealand and Jutland (Routledge Medieval Translations)

by Ditlev Tamm Helle Vogt

The Danish medieval laws: the laws of Scania, Zealand and Jutland contains translations of the four most important medieval Danish laws written in the vernacular. The main texts are those of the Law of Scania, the two laws of Zealand – Valdemar’s and Erik’s – and the Law of Jutland, all of which date from the early thirteenth century. The Church Law of Scania and three short royal ordinances are also included. These provincial laws were first written down in the first half of the thirteenth century and were in force until 1683, when they were replaced by a national law. The laws, preserved in over 100 separate manuscripts, are the first extended texts in Danish and represent a first attempt to create a Danish legal language. The book starts with a brief but thorough introduction to the history of Denmark in the thirteenth century, covering the country, the political setting and the legal context in which the laws were written. There follows the translated text from each province, preceded by a general introduction to each area and an introduction to the translation offering key contextual information and background on the process of translating the laws. An Old Danish-English glossary is also included, along with an annotated glossary to support the reading of the translations. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of medieval Scandinavian legal history.

The Carlsberg Story: Founders, Foundations, and Fortunes

by Ditlev Tamm

This book offers a comprehensive business history of one of the largest global brewing companies. By combining industrial history with insights from corporate management and strategy, it reveals the success story of a family-owned company that has achieved a market-leading position worldwide. The author provides deep insights into the founding of the modern Danish brewery by J.C. Jacobsen Carlsberg in 1847, the company’s subsequent rapid success, the relationship between brewing and science, and the importance of the Danish scientist H.C. Ørsted in establishing this relationship. Readers will also learn about the founder’s son, Carl Jacobsen, and the tensions between him and his father; the establishment of the Carlsberg Foundation in 1876; and the transfer of J.C. Jacobsen’s breweries to the foundation in 1888, which makes it likely the oldest managing foundation in Europe. Further chapters cover business agreements concerning the Danish beer market in the 20th century, the relations with Tuborg Ltd., the period of occupation in 1940-45, and how Carlsberg finally merged with - but in reality took over -Tuborg in 1970 and missed out on international business opportunities in the 1980s and 1990s. It also examines why Carlsberg has pursued an aggressive expansion strategy since 2000, e.g. by taking over its competitor Scottish and Newcastle together with Heineken in 2008, and has now become the third largest brewery in the world. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of brewing and the success factors of one of the leading global breweries.

The Liber legis Scaniae: The Latin Text with Introduction, Translation and Commentaries (Routledge Medieval Translations)

by Ditlev Tamm

The Liber legis Scaniae: The Latin Text with Introduction, Translation and Commentaries forms the second volume of The Danish Medieval Laws and is dedicated to the Latin text based on the Danish medieval Law of Scania. Also known as the "Old laws of Scania", the Liber legis Scaniae is ascribed to Archbishop Anders Sunesen and traditionally belongs to the corpus of Danish medieval laws. It was translated from Old Danish in the thirteenth century and until now has often been considered a subsidiary text. In this book, the importance of the Liber legis Scaniae is reexamined and its role in the first redaction of the Danish medieval laws is revealed as far more central than previously thought. This is the first time the text has been translated into English, and both the original Latin and the new English translation are included together. Beginning with a detailed introduction providing key information about the text, its author and its place in Danish legal history, and including a chapter dedicated to the Latin language of the text, this book will be ideal for students and scholars of medieval Scandinavian legal history. It also concludes with an extensive Latin-to-English glossary.

Rechtliche Herausforderungen nachhaltiger Logistikkonzepte: Am Beispiel der LastMileTram

by Deike A. Tamm Domenik H. Wendt
