The Accidental Adult

by Colin Sokolowski

Those carefree days of post-college life went away in the blink of an eye. Now you spend your money on mortgage payments and Saturdays at dance recitals. The mixtapes you blasted out of your two-door coupe went the same way as the car, traded in--for a sliding-door minivan with a complimentary Wiggles CD. If life's the ultimate road trip, it's time to stop listening to the GPS of responsible adulthood. Instead, follow the lead of reluctant grown-up Colin Sokolowski, who proves growing up doesn't necessarily mean selling out. With a little guidance, you can survive the inevitable trek to old age as an accidental adult and have some fun along the way. Part how-to advice and part how-not-to narrative, The Accidental Adult leads you along an alternate path through adulthood. You'll learn there's a time and a place to act your age (ditch the Coors Light during dinner parties), but that you don't have to lose your sense of cool (it's okay to buy those $250 reunion tour tickets--as long as your car payment's in). With it, you'll realize that just because you're older doesn't mean you have to be lamer.

Access to Origins: Affines, Ancestors, and Aristocrats

by Mary W. Helms

In many non-industrial, non-Western societies, power and prestige are closely linked to the extent of an individual's or group's perceived connection to the supernatural realm, which also explains and validates tangible activities such as economic success, victories in war, or control over lucrative trade. Affines (in-laws), ancestors, and aristocrats, in particular, are connected to the realm of creative cosmological origins (i. e. , to Genesis), which accords them distinctive, supernatural powers and gives them a natural and legitimate right to worldly authority. This is the hypothesis that Mary W. Helms pursues in this broadly cross-cultural study of aristocracy in chiefly societies. She begins with basic ideas about the dead, ancestors, affines, and concepts of cosmological origins. This leads her to a discussion of cosmologically defined hierarchies, the qualities that characterize aristocracy, and the political and ideological roles of aristocrats as wife-givers and wife-takers (that is, as in-laws). She concludes by considering various models that explain how societies may develop or define aristocracies. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Second Edition

by Steven C. Hayes Kirk D. Strosahl

Since the original publication of this seminal work, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) has come into its own as a widely practiced approach to helping people change. This book provides the definitive statement of ACT--from conceptual and empirical foundations to clinical techniques written by its originators. Sample therapeutic exercises and patient-therapist dialogues are integrated throughout. New to This Edition, Reflects tremendous advances in ACT clinical applications, theory building, and research. Psychological flexibility is now the central organizing focus. Expanded coverage of mindfulness, the therapeutic relationship, relational learning, and case formulation. 'Who is that man?' Honora Lee asks when Perry's father leaves the room. After movement class is abruptly cancelled, Perry is allowed to go to Santa Lucia on Thursday afternoons. She discovers her Gran has an unconventional interest in the alphabet, so Perry decides to make an alphabet book with the help of Honora and the others. Soon everyone is interested in Perry's book project. The ACB With Honora Lee unfolds with characteristic warmth, quirky, surprising humor and a rich cast of 'residents'. Abundância: O caminho interior para a riqueza

by Deepak Chopra
