Doctrine and Disease in the British and Spanish Colonial World

by Kathleen Miller

During the early modern period, unprecedented migration caused diseases to take hold in new locales, turning illness and the human body into battlegrounds for competing religious beliefs as well as the colonial agendas in which they were often ensnared. This interdisciplinary volume follows the contours of illness, epidemics, and cures in the early modern British and Spanish Empires as these were understood in religious terms. Each chapter of this volume centers on a key moment during this period of remarkable upheaval, including Jesuit co-optation of Indigenous knowledge in Peru, the Catholic Church’s dissemination of the smallpox vaccine across the Spanish Empire, Puritan collective fasting during smallpox outbreaks, and the practice of eating dirt as Obeah resistance among enslaved people in Jamaica. Throughout, the contributors explore how the porous geographical borders of the transatlantic world meant that medicine and religion were translated through and against each other, over and over again. Residing at the nexus between two largely discrete areas of inquiry, this collection provides significant insight into the numerous points of juncture between medicine and religion in the Atlantic world. In addition to the editor, the contributors to this volume include Matthew James Crawford, Crawford Gribben, Rana A. Hogarth, Philippa Koch, Allyson M. Poska, Catherine Reedy, and Rebecca Totaro.

Doggerel: Poems

by Reginald Dwayne Betts

Doggerel is a revelatory meditation on Blackness, masculinity, and vulnerability from one of poetry’s boldest voices. Reginald Dwayne Betts is our foremost chronicler of the ways prison shapes and transforms American life. In Doggerel, Betts examines this subject through a more prosaic—but equally rich—lens: dogs. He reminds us that, as our lives are broken and put back together, the only witness often barks instead of talks. In these poems, which touch on companionship in its many forms, Betts seamlessly and skillfully deploys the pantoum, ghazal, and canzone, in conversation with artists such as Freddie Gibbs and Lil Wayne. Simultaneously philosophical and playful, Doggerel is a meditation on family, falling in love, friendship, and those who accompany us on our walk through life. Balancing political critique with personal experience, Betts once again shows us “how poems can be enlisted to radically disrupt narrative” (Dan Chiasson, The New Yorker)—and, in doing so, reveals the world anew. “. . . every story becomes a multiplication, If the naming is filled less with names than With the best parts, the barking & everything Else, because who among us hasn’t been As mangy as a rescue, even on our best Days, desiring mostly to be loved.” —from “Rings”

Doing Theological Double Dutch: A Womanist Pedagogy of Play

by Lakisha R. Lockhart-Rusch

Embodied womanist play brings us closer to ourselves, to others, and to the divine. In this remarkably innovative book, Lakisha R. Lockhart-Rusch offers a fresh vision for theological education rooted in the embodied insights of Black women. Acknowledging the historical reality that play has often been a privilege reserved for those in power, Lockhart-Rusch shows how play has nonetheless functioned as a hidden space of agency, healing, and resistance for Black women. Using the game of Double Dutch as an extended metaphor, she demonstrates how a womanist pedagogy of play offers a transformative encounter with the love of self and of God for students from all backgrounds. Coupling theory with practical tools, this book equips theological educators to teach across difference for the liberation of all.

Domesticating Saints in Medieval and Early Modern Rome (The Middle Ages Series)

by Maya Maskarinec

How elite Roman families used genealogy, architecture, and the urban fabric to appropriate the city’s saints for their ownDomesticating Saints in Medieval and Early Modern Rome explores the creative efforts of some of Rome’s most prominent noble families to weave themselves into Rome’s Christian past. Maya Maskarinec shows how, from late antiquity to early modernity, elite Roman families used genealogy, architecture, and the urban fabric to appropriate the city’s saints for their own, eventually claiming them as ancestors.Over the course of the Middle Ages, there developed a pronounced sense that churches and their saints belonged to specific regions, neighborhoods, and even families. These associations, coupled with a resurgent interest in Rome’s Christian antiquity as well as in noble lineages, enabled Roman families to “domesticate” the city’s saints and dominate the urban landscape and its politics into the early modern era. These families cultivated saintly genealogies and saintly topologies (exploiting, for example, the increasingly prolific identification of churches as the former residences of early Christian and late antique saints), cementing presumed connections between place, descent, and moral worth.Drawing from sources spanning the fourth to the late sixteenth century, Maskarinec brings into conversation saints’ lives, documentary evidence, family genealogies, monumental and domestic architecture, and medieval and early modern guidebooks, sources not often studied together. Bridging the divide between secular and sacred histories of Rome, Domesticating Saints in Medieval and Early Modern Rome repositions these materials within a new story, of how Romans made the city’s classical and Christian past their own and thereby empowered and immortalized their families.

Don't Believe, What You Think: Sense and Nonsense of Religion and Religiosity

by Werner Gross

This nonfiction book addresses the question of what relevance religiosity still holds today and where psychologists set up warning signs. Religions today have a Janus-faced character: On the one hand, they offer emotional support and assistance (not only) in crisis situations – on the other hand, suicide attacks are carried out in their name, and under their guise, sexual abuse of children has flourished (or continues to do so). Religions have lost their innocence worldwide. But what exactly are religions? How did they arise? How have they changed over time? What are the positive aspects of religions – and what are the problematic ones? Where do they help, and where do they harm? What distinguishes them – and what do they have in common? Contents: Religions: World-explaining and meaning-making systems that almost always consider themselves the one true, eternal, and ultimate explanation system. – They structure diffuse, subjective inner truths and unstructured situations, attempting to make the incomprehensible comprehensible. – Basic trust, symbols, ritual actions. – What are spiritual enlightenment experiences? – The origin of all religions is fear, emptiness, meaninglessness, and death. – Religions are good guides in the dark of night – during the day, it’s better to rely on your own eyes. About the author: Werner Gross, Dipl.-Psych., psychotherapist, supervisor, and coach.

Ecophenomenology and the Environmental Crisis in the Sundarbans: Towards a Community-Based Ethic (Routledge Explorations in Environmental Studies)

by Kalpita Bhar Paul

This book offers a philosophical analysis of the environmental crisis in the Indian Sundarbans, drawing upon phenomenological narratives. It nuances the present understanding of the crisis by introducing plurality in our metaphysical understanding of the environment and epistemological understanding of the human–environment relationship.Contemporary research on the Sundarbans mainly focuses on the impending threat of climate change, natural disasters, as well as increasing human–animal conflict, conservation, and forest access debates, while scholarly works have mostly used environmental impact assessments to offer technocratic solutions that prioritize a particular type of human–environment relationship characterized by an "anticipation of ruin." Rather than rushing to find solutions, I embark on a journey to unpack the meaning of crisis through phenomenological narratives of human–environment relationships. A deep dive into the human–environment relationship through an intentional engagement with the work-worlds of islanders, the formation of a more-than-human community is revealed, giving rise to community-based ethic that transcends the poverty of thought and imagination in comprehending the crisis of the Indian Sundarbans. This new ethical framework emphasizes the co-emergence of self-consciousness and eco-consciousness, serving as a moral impetus for individuals to act ethically towards the environment. This approach impels us to rethink what the Sundarbans is, how the crisis gets manifested to the inlanders and outsiders, and what kind of procedural changes are required to protect the Sundarbans as a living ecosystem instead of a natural museum. The book’s phenomenological depth and engaged philosophical framework will elicit deep interest from within academia and among practitioners who are working in environmental studies, philosophy, human ecology, and island studies. The convergence of conceptual understandings and field narratives will also draw the interest of research students working in correlated fields.

Egeria: Theological and Ecclesial Knowledge Between Eastern and Western Traditions (Elements in Early Christian Literature)

by Anni Maria Laato

Egeria's Itinerarium is a unique document. It is one of the few surviving works from antiquity written by a woman and is one of the first Christian travelogues depicting a pilgrimage to and in the Holy Land. In her Itinerarium, Egeria describes not only her travels but also the practices of pilgrimage and the liturgical life in Jerusalem at a time when both of these were developing rapidly. As Egeria's explicit goal is to communicate her observations and thoughts to her friends, a community of women in the west, this study focusses on Egeria's role as a communicator. Both the contents of her text – what she wanted to communicate and the techniques she used to mediate her experiences and learning to her friends, that is, how she chose to communicate, are scrutinized. Special attention is given to how Egeria describes lived religion in antiquity.

Embodied Ecology: Yoga and the Environment

by Christopher Key Chapple

In Embodied Ecology, Hindu Studies scholar Christopher Key Chapple explores how Hindu and Yoga traditions can inform contemporary discourse about the problems of environmental degradation both in India and globally. What do Hinduism and Yoga philosophy have to say about ecology and the environment? Christopher Key Chapple provides an in-depth analysis of the traditional texts and ideas that relate to modern concerns and conversations in the environmental movement. Chapple explains what ancient Indian texts, including the Vedas and Upani?ads, tell us about the centrality of earth-awareness in early India. Chapple then also examines how contemporary eco-activists, such as Vandana Shiva, M.C. Mehta, and Sunderlal Bahuguna, are applying traditional teachings and methods to current environmental crises. Embodied Ecology highlights how Hindu and Yoga ideals can address pressing environmental problems including global consumerism, the proliferation of plastic waste, species extinctions, and climate change. Chapple offers insights on how Yoga ethics can help us create guidelines for the modern ills of over-consumption and how meditation practices can help foster a greater connection to the environment, as well as alleviate distress brought about by eco-anxiety. Under Chapple&’s guide, students will gain familiarity with primary Hindu texts describing methods for understanding and connecting with the five primary elements and learn Yoga practices and lifestyle changes that can be applied to bring about positive change on both a global and individual level.

Embodied Pedagogies in the Study of Religion: Transforming the Classroom

by Sravana Borkataky-Varma Sarabinh Levy-Brightman

Embodied Pedagogies in the Study of Religion provides a forum for creative, renowned teachers (professors and instructors) of religion to discuss ways in which they think about the embodied dimension of teaching and learning specific to their areas of expertise and how they have shaped their curriculum to engage and reflect their thinking. The goal of this volume is multiple: It will showcase deeply thoughtful and creative approaches to teaching and learning that will inspire other teachers and vivify the teaching and academic study of religion. It will raise complex epistemological and ontological issues that underpin the craft of teaching but are rarely discussed and even more rarely discussed with sophistication and about the craft itself. It will raise these issues in relation to multiple traditions that hold different and at times conflicting epistemologies and ontologies, thus opening a truly cross-cultural comparative dialogue. This cutting-edge volume is an open-ended conversation that embraces the exploration of different pedagogies with different kinds of content and quests for different forms of learning and understanding. Ultimately this volume will contribute to a developing conversation in religious studies that moves beyond rigid orthodoxies to a place of open creative, productive, and enacted exploration, cultivation, and theorization.

Embracing Infinite Possibilities: Letting Go of Fear to Find Your Highest Potential

by Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr

Dr. Bernard Harris shares his journey, and an honest discussion of his struggles, ambitions, hopes and dreams, as a testimony to the voyage that we all face with a desire to discover the power from within. All of us have to deal with external challenges at some point in our lives. Liberation comes when you discover just how unimportant these things really are. Then you will no longer see the world around you as hostile and unforgiving. This reality will free you to be who you really are. There is great power with this realization! Self-endowed power that releases you from the burden of self-doubt. There is no greater power in the world, except that of God. This is, in fact, the truth that God wants for each of us. The realization of our own strength, that is, we are an integral part of something greater than ourselves. One of Harris&’s lifelong goals is to instill inspiration as well as aspiration in people. Embracing Infinite Possibilities looks to build on these ideas by serving as a roadmap to discover the power within each of us. If we are students of the universe, it is clear to me that each of us must find this power within to find our own way and in our own time—some through the experiences of life, some by reading, others by observing, being taught or through self-study. Harris encourages the reader to find their own path. As a companion to his first book, Dream Walker, Embracing Infinite Possibilities will open their mind to the infinite possibilities of life, instilling hope in those who have yet to discover their own power.

Encampment: Resistance, Grace, and an Unhoused Community

by Maggie Helwig

"Striking, elegant." – Publishers Weekly, ★ STARRED Review"An activist priest provides sanctuary for an encampment of unhoused people in her churchyardThe housing crisis plaguing major urban centres has sent countless people into the streets. In spring 2022, some of them found their way to the yard beside the Anglican church in Toronto’s Kensington Market, where Maggie Helwig is the priest. They pitched tents, formed an encampment, and settled in. Known as an outspoken social justice activist, Helwig has spent the last three years getting to know the residents and fighting tooth and nail to allow them to stay, battling various authorities that want to clear the yard and keep the results of the housing crisis out of sight and out of mind. Encampment tells the story of Helwig’s life-long activism as preparation for her fight to keep her churchyard open to people needing a home. More importantly, it introduces us to the Artist, to Jeff, and to Robin: their lives, their challenges, their humanity. It confronts our society’s callousness in allowing so many to go unhoused and demands, by bringing their stories to the fore, that we begin to respond with compassion and grace.

Engineering Ethics: Peace, Justice, and the Earth (Synthesis Lectures on Engineers, Technology, & Society)

by George D. Catalano

In the original two editions of Engineering Ethics: Peace, Justice, and the Earth, a response of the engineering profession to the challenges of security, poverty and underdevelopment, environmental sustainability, and native cultures was described. Ethical codes, which govern the behavior of engineers, were examined from a historical perspective linking the prevailing codes to models of the natural world. A new ethical code based on a recently introduced model of Nature as an integral community was provided and discussed. Applications of the new code were described using a case study approach. The proposed third edition will build on the foundational material included in the previous two editions. Over the course of the last decade new and profoundly challenging ethical issues (synthetic biology, artificial intelligence, climate change and the sixth extinction) have arisen in the engineering profession. The notion of an integral community has been more fully developed. The proposed book will include an exploration of these issues as well as provide the reader with a better understanding of the historical development of ethical reasoning and consider future possibilities. Implications of the innovative ideas in ethics and design on engineering education are also considered.

Enough with "Enough": Letters of Encouragement for Women Struggling Under the Weight of a Christian Life

by Higher Things Higher Things

The Christian life is not meant to be a burden—it's a joy. Yet, we feel burdened by the world, the devil, and even our own hearts as they constantly whisper that we're not doing enough, growing enough, or believing enough. But what if "enough" isn't something we achieve—what if it's something already given to us? Enough with "Enough" is the next volume in our Letters of Encouragement series. It delivers 23 heartfelt letters written for women who feel the weight of measuring up. In this pages, you will be reminded that the gospel isn't about what we do—it's about what Christ has already done. Jesus is both the fulfillment of the law and the forgiveness of our sins, freeing us from the exhausting cycle of self-measurement. With grace-filled encouragement, this book invites Christian women to embrace their God-given vocations with joy and confidence. In Christ, we don't have to strive for "enough"—in him, we are enough.

Entangled: A History of American Methodism, Politics, and Sexuality

by Ashley Boggan

The United Methodist impasse over human sexuality has its roots in two dichotomous ideologies of history and theology. This book maps how American Methodists have responded to sexual change since World War II. It argues that the current United Methodist impasse over human sexuality has its root in the existence of two dichotomous ideologies of Methodist history and theology--one liberal and one evangelical, which come to the foreground in discussions of human sexuality. It offers evidence about how these ideologies have sought to reconcile their sexual ethic with sexual change since the birth control movement of the 1920s. In post-WWII America, most Methodists upheld a limited notion of family life and sexuality, one that allowed for the use of artificial contraception within marriage and for divorce. In response to the sexual revolution, liberal-leaning Methodists upheld a new sexual ethic, "the new morality," which peaked with radical new approaches to sex education, a full endorsement of abortion rights, and support of the homophile movement. However, "the new morality" coincided with an increased presence of and a new voice for evangelical Methodists, Charles Keysor and the Good News Movement. Evangelical Methodists critiqued "the new morality" as value-neutral and anti-Scripture. The evangelical desire for a rules-based morality solely reliant on Scripture collided with "the new morality" and led to intense debates over sex education, abortion, and the inclusion of LGBTQ persons within the United Methodist denomination from the 1970s onward. Since 1972, United Methodists have continually debated "human sexuality" at each General Conference, primarily through the advocacy efforts of political caucus groups. This author hopes that an historical examination of how Methodists have confronted sexual change will enlighten current conversations about human sexuality.
