Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible (And Why We Don't Know About Them)
by Bart D. EhrmanPicking up where Bible expert Bart Ehrman's New York Times bestseller Misquoting Jesus left off, Jesus, Interrupted addresses the larger issue of what the New Testament actually teaches--and it's not what most people think. Here Ehrman reveals what scholars have unearthed: The authors of the New Testament have diverging views about who Jesus was and how salvation works The New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christian writers who lived decades later Jesus, Paul, Matthew, and John all represented fundamentally different religions Established Christian doctrines--such as the suffering messiah, the divinity of Jesus, and the trinity--were the inventions of still later theologians These are not idiosyncratic perspectives of just one modern scholar. As Ehrman skillfully demonstrates, they have been the standard and widespread views of critical scholars across a full spectrum of denominations and traditions. Why is it most people have never heard such things? This is the book that pastors, educators, and anyone interested in the Bible have been waiting for--a clear and compelling account of the central challenges we face when attempting to reconstruct the life and message of Jesus.

Jesus, Contradicted: Why the Gospels Tell the Same Story Differently
by Michael R. LiconaThe differences and discrepancies in the Gospels constitute the foremost objections to their reliability and the credibility of their message. Some have tried to resolve Gospels contradictions with strained harmonization efforts. Many others conclude that the Gospels are hopelessly contradictory and, therefore, historically unreliable accounts of Jesus. In Jesus, Contradicted, New Testament scholar Michael Licona shows how the genre of ancient biography, to which the Gospels belong, actually allows biographers to be flexible in how they report events, construct a narrative, and make an argument. Licona demonstrates that the intentional changes to the Jesus tradition by the Evangelists reveal that the differences in how the Gospels report events are not grounds for their rejection. Instead, they are a result of the Gospel writers employing standard literary conventions common in their time for writing ancient biography.Licona introduces readers to the genre of ancient biography through Plutarch, who wrote 48 of the 90 extent biographies written within 150 years of Jesus, giving numerous examples of compositional devices employed by Plutarch, and comparing them with instances in the Gospels where the Evangelists appear to use similar techniques. Licona also examines Theon's Progymnasmata, a first-century textbook that provides six techniques for paraphrasing one's sources when writing a narrative. In doing so, he helps readers understand why the Gospels report many events differently. Finally, Licona concludes by addressing the thorny question of whether the editorial moves commonplace in ancient biography are compatible with the doctrines of the divine inspiration and the inerrancy of Scripture.Rather than trying to resolve discrepancies by bending the Gospel narrative, which risks making them say things they aren't saying, Jesus, Contradicted situates the Gospels within their proper context and helps readers account for differences in the Gospels in a cohesive and historically cogent way.

Jesus, Bread, and Chocolate: Crafting a Handmade Faith in a Mass-Market World
by John J. ThompsonFarmer’s markets, artisanal dark chocolate, home-made bread, craft-brewed beer, and independent boutique coffee shops may not immediately call to mind issues of faith, but they should. As the “American Dream” starts to fray at both ends, millions of people are embracing values that seem to hail from a bygone era. They are seeking out the local, the small, the responsible and the nourishing instead of the cheap, the homogenized, the mass-produced and the canned. Is it possible that this renewed interest in these pre-modern values may actually offer an open door into the hearts and minds of this generation? Is there a way to explore specific, inspiring stories about coffee, bread, chocolate and art that lead people toward a truly Biblical understanding of the person, words and work of Jesus to reveal the truth, goodness and beauty of the Gospel? With fascinating stories and a thread of memoir, Jesus, Bread, and Chocolate explores the emerging—actually re-emerging—values of this post-industrial age and points out parallels between them and the teaching and ministry of Jesus and his earliest followers. Rather than seeking to tie the faith to trends in the culture, it shows how trends in the culture are already very close to the organic kind of faith that could reenergize the church and bring countless young and middle-aged people into a saving experience of Christ.
Jesus, Bombs, and Ice Cream Study Guide: Building a More Peaceful World
by Shane ClaiborneNearly 2,000 years ago, Jesus urged his followers to live a life of love and peace. And he was willing to come to Earth to live, die and rise again to make this a reality. In this six-session study, author and activist Shane Claiborne guides on the audacious journey of creating a world filled with peace, with the goal of ending violence wherever we can. As a Christian, Shane loves the resurrection because it's the promise that love can conquer hatred and life can conquer death. Shane believes that we all share this vision of a world, one in which love triumphs over hatred, life conquers death, and we practice the resurrection every day. A couple of years ago Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, and Shane Clairborne crossed paths. Ben said to Shane, "I have read your books, and I like what I see." Shane said to Ben, "I have eaten your ice cream, and I like what I taste." They started dreaming and scheming...and Jesus, Bombs, and Ice Cream was born. A host of talented firends have joined Shane and Ben for the video extravaganza, adding their gifts and imaginations to the growing movement of people who want to live in a world with fewer bombs and more ice cream. This participant's guide is packed full of stories, quotes, reflections and questions for groups and individuals to discuss and discern how they can help make a more peaceful world a reality. Designed for use with the video.

Jesus' Terrible Financial Advice: Flipping the Tables on Peace, Prosperity, and the Pursuit of Happiness
by John Thornton&“Jesus&’ advice ruined what I planned to write.&” It was the recipe for a great book. John and his wife—both financial experts—had cut their income by 80% to pursue more meaningful lives. Within six years they had two kids, were debt-free, went on several vacations, and doubled their net worth. John was ready to share the biblical principles that made this possible. But he couldn&’t. After reviewing Scripture&’s teaching on money—over 1,300 verses—he realized he had missed something big. Jesus&’ Terrible Financial Advice turns even conventional Christian wisdom on its head. While it answers many of the practical questions we have—like does Jesus want me to be rich or poor? Should I give to everybody who asks? Is it wrong to save?—it goes beyond these concerns. It asks bigger questions, gives bolder answers, and offers a more comprehensive view of stewardship. Follow Jesus&’ &“terrible&” (shocking, otherworldly) financial advice, and you&’ll have what money can&’t buy: purpose.

Jesus' Resurrection and Joseph's Visions: Examining the Foundations of Christianity and Mormonism
by Robert M Bowman JrJust as the resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of Christianity, the visions of Joseph Smith are the foundation of Mormonism. In Jesus' Resurrection and Joseph's Visions, Robert Bowman compares the evidence for Jesus' resurrection with the evidence for Joseph's visions, showing how the historical data confirm the truth of Jesus' resurrection, and that the accounts of Joseph Smith's visions are historically unreliable. For Mormons who have doubts about their religion, this study will help them find a more reliable basis for faith in Christ. For Christians, this study provides a fresh angle on the historical evidence for the truth of Christianity.
Jesus' Plan For A New World: The Sermon On The Mount
by Richard Rohr John Bookser FeisterWhen Jesus talked about the Kingdom of God, he was talking about an utterly different way of relating to human society as we know it. Jesus' Parables about Priorities
by James W. MooreJames W. MooreParables slip up on us. They flip our values. They turn our world upside down. They surprise us. This is the great thing about the parables of Jesus: They are always relevant and always personal. They speak eloquently to you and me, here and now. In this book, we will examine some of Jesus’ thought-provoking parables, parables about priorities, to see if we can find ourselves and God’s truth for us in these magnificent “truth-stories.” They are, after all, truth-stories from the mind of Jesus that can change our lives as they proclaim God’s truth for you and me.—adapted from the introductionEach of the six chapters features a key passage of Scripture and is centered on a theme from one of Jesus’ parables, includingThe Priority of LoveThe Priority of GraceThe Priority of Being PreparedThe Priority of CourageThe Priority of ForgivenessThe Priority of Strong FoundationsJAMES W.
