One Small Barking Dog

by Ed Gungor

Small Is the New Big In this humorous, insistent book, Pastor Ed Gungor demonstrates that the world is changed most by ordinary people--the "small dogs" of the human race. Small dogs may not run the world, but neither can the world tune them out. If it weren't for small dogs, the world might be a quieter place, but it would certainly be a needier one. With chapters like "Dare to Be Small," "Fight the Big-Dog Lie," and "The Bark of Faith," Gungor challenges the notion that earthly prominence, status, and power are essential to significance. Reminding us that small is the new big, he inspires us to fall in love with life--the everyday, normal kind--and shows us how to make an eternal difference.Living a Life That's Hard to Ignore The thing about small, barking dogs is that they can't be ignored. They may not be show-dog material or win outstanding awards, but through their persistence and insistence they make themselves known. Only a handful of people ever achieve notoriety and "greatness," but the energizing truth of One Small Barking Dog is that every single one of us can change the world. New York Times bestselling author Ed Gungor debunks the big-dog lie and clearly teaches "ordinary" people how to live out their faith in a way that not only changes the world we live in now but that affects lives for eternity. By the time you finish this book, you won't be worried about being small. You'll be ready to take on the world. You'll know how to live a life that can't be ignored.Whether you've just graduated from school or you've been at this life for many years, Ed Gungor's concrete principles and simple life wisdom will show you new ways to make a big impact on your world.

One.Life: Jesus Calls, We Follow

by Scot Mcknight Gabe Lyons

What is the “Christian life” all about? Studying the Bible, attending church, cultivating a prayer life, witnessing to others—those are all good. But is that really what Jesus has in mind? The answer, says Scot McKnight in One.Life, lies in Jesus’ words, “Follow me.” What does it look like to follow Jesus, and how will doing so change the way we live our life—our love.life, our justice.life, our peace.life, our community.life, our sex.life—everything about our life. One.Life will open your eyes to the full, compelling immensity of what it means to be a Christian. “Jesus offers to us a kingdom dream that transforms us to the very core of our being,” says Scot McKnight. “His vision is so big we are called to give our entire life to it. His vision is so big it swallows up our dreams.” Discover exactly what Jesus meant when he announced the arrival of God’s kingdom. Equipping you with a new understanding of that kingdom’s radical nature, One.Life shares profound, challenging, and practical insights on how to demonstrate its reality in your life. In many ways, what The Cost of Discipleship by Bonhoeffer challenged Christians to do in earlier generations, One.Life will do for a new generation. One.Life will call you beyond the flatlands of religiosity toward a kingdom vision that will shape everything you do.

Opening to God: Lectio Divina and Life as Prayer

by David G. Benner

Most Christians want to experience spiritual transformation. But many are frustrated by the limited progress of our spiritual self-improvement efforts. We find our praying burdened by a sense of obligation and failure. But prayer is not merely something we do; prayer is what God does in us. Prayer is not just communication with God—it is communion with God. As we open ourselves to him, God does the spiritual work of transformation in us. Spiritual director and psychologist David Benner invites us to discover openness to God as the essence of prayer, spirituality, and the Christian life. Prayer is far more than saying words to God; all of life can be prayer when offered to God in faith and with openness. Using the four movements of lectio divina, Benner explores prayer as attending, pondering, responding, and being. Along the way he opens us to a world of possibilities for communion with God: praying with our senses, with imagination, with music and creativity, in contemplation, in service, and much more. Learn how prayer can be a way of living. Move beyond words to become not merely someone who prays, but someone whose entire life is prayer in union with God. This expanded edition includes a new afterword and an experiential guide with questions for individual reflection or group discussion.

by John Eckhardt

Ordinary People, Extraordinary Power: Be Activated To Heal, Deliver, Prophesy, Preach, And Demonstrate God's Kingdom

by John Eckhardt

<p class="description">SUMMARY:<br>In today's world we need Christians and churches willing to break out of the normal patterns of religion and tradition to impact and reach the world. Ordinary People, Extraordinary Power gives a strong case for the apostolic culture as a criterion for change in the church today. A culture is a way of life of a group of peoplethe behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next. An apostolic culture is simply the ways, beliefs, behavior, and values of God's people. It is a culture of power and the Holy Spirit. Apostolic leaders will impart power and authority to the members. Believers need to be activated to heal, deliver, prophesy, and preach. They must be activated to demonstrate the kingdom. The apostolic culture includes worship, deliverance, apostolic teams, prophecy, ordaining, establishing, pioneering, evangelizing, prayer, teaching, helps, governments, missions, healing, the Gifts of the Spirit, holiness, impartation, and church government. All of these will be discussed in this book in order to help leaders and believers move in apostolic power and authority.</p>

Ordinary Recovery: Mindfulness, Addiction, and the Path of Lifelong Sobriety

by William Alexander Kevin Griffin

The key to ongoing freedom from alcoholism or any other kind of addiction is right before us, here and now, in the ordinary and perfect present moment. The problem is that addictions are often the result of our efforts to escape living in the present in the first place. Bill Alexander's unique approach uses mindfulness, story, and meditation to help alcoholics and others learn to come back to the present moment and find healing there.Emerging scientific research suggests that mindfulness (a nonjudgmental awareness of our moment-to-moment experience) can help prevent addiction relapse. Ordinary Recovery is a revised edition of Alexander's book Cool Water, with a new foreword, a new preface by the author, updates throughout the book, and a new resources section.

Origins of the Magdalene Laundries: An Analytical History

by Rebecca Lea Mccarthy

The convents, asylums, and laundries that once comprised the Magdalene institutions are the subject of this work. Though originally half-way homes for prostitutes in the Middle Ages, these homes often became forced-labor institutions, particularly in Ireland. Examining the laundries within the context of a growing world capitalist economy, the work argues that the process of colonization, and of defining a national image, determined the nature and longevity of the Magdalene Laundries. This process developed differently in Ireland, where the last laundry closed in 1996. The book focuses on the devolution of the significance of Mary Magdalene as a metaphor for the organization: from an affluent, strong supporter of Jesus to a simple, fallen woman.

Orthodox Christianity in 21st Century Greece: The Role of Religion in Culture, Ethnicity and Politics

by Vasilios N. Makrides

One of the predominantly Orthodox countries that has never experienced communism is Greece, a country uniquely situated to offer insights about contemporary trends and developments in Orthodox Christianity. This volume offers a comprehensive treatment of the role Orthodox Christianity plays at the dawn of the twenty-first century Greece from social scientific and cultural-historical perspectives. This book breaks new ground by examining in depth the multifaceted changes that took place in the relationship between Orthodox Christianity and politics, ethnicity, gender, and popular culture. Its intention is two-fold: on the one hand, it aims at revisiting some earlier stereotypes, widespread both in academic and others circles, about the Greek Orthodox Church, its cultural specificity and its social presence, such as its alleged intrinsic non-pluralistic attitude toward non-Orthodox Others. On the other hand, it attempts to show how this fairly traditional religious system underwent significant changes in recent years affecting its public role and image, particularly as it became more and more exposed to the challenges of globalization and multiculturalism.

Orthodox by Design: Judaism, Print Politics, and the ArtScroll Revolution

by Jeremy Stolow

Orthodox by Design, a groundbreaking exploration of religion and media, examines ArtScroll, the world's largest Orthodox Jewish publishing house, purveyor of handsomely designed editions of sacred texts and a major cultural force in contemporary Jewish public life. In the first in-depth study of the ArtScroll revolution, Jeremy Stolow traces the ubiquity of ArtScroll books in local retail markets, synagogues, libraries, and the lives of ordinary users. Synthesizing field research conducted in three local Jewish scenes where ArtScroll books have had an impact--Toronto, London, and New York--along with close readings of key ArtScroll texts, promotional materials, and the Jewish blogosphere, he shows how the use of these books reflects a broader cultural shift in the authority and public influence of Orthodox Judaism. Playing with the concept of design, Stolow's study also outlines a fresh theoretical approach to print culture and illuminates how evolving technologies, material forms, and styles of mediated communication contribute to new patterns of religious identification, practice, and power.Finalist for the National Jewish Book Award in the scholarship category, Jewish Book Council

Other: Embracing Difference in a Fractured World

by Kester Brewin

Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?'Jesus replied: '"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: "Love your neighbour as yourself." All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.' Matthew 22:36-40Noisy neighbours, international terrorism, racism, teenage violence and religious fundamentalism ...from the personal to the local to the international and theological, it is our failure to engage 'the other' that is at the heart of so many of the problems we face. Beginning with Jesus' instruction to love God, and love our neighbour as we love ourselves, Brewin explores how we might better engage 'the other' within the Self, within God and within the worlds we inhabit.Drawing on Brewin's work as a theologian, poet and teacher this accessible and highly original work prompts us to reconsider the key question of 'what kind of selves do we need to be in order to live in harmony with others?

Our Lady of KIBEHO: Mary Speaks to the World from the Heart of Africa

by Immaculee Ilibagiza

&“No matter what your race, religion, political affiliation, or personal belief system, you will be inspired by Our Lady of Kibeho—a true story of the power of faith and the great potential of forgiveness.&”— John Fund, columnist for The Wall Street JournalThirteen years before the bloody 1994 genocide that swept across Rwanda and left more than a million people dead, the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ appeared to eight young people in the remote village of Kibeho. Through these visionaries, Mary and Jesus warned of the looming holocaust, which they assured could be averted if Rwandans opened their hearts to God and embraced His love. Much like what happened at similar sites such as Fátima and Lourdes, the messengers of Kibeho were at first mocked and disbelieved. But as miracle after miracle occurred in the tiny village, tens of thousands of Rwandans journeyed to Kibeho to behold the apparitions. For years, countless onlookers watched as the Mother and Son of God spoke through the eight seers about God&’s love, sending messages that they insisted were meant not only for Rwandans, but for the entire world, to hear. Mary also sent messages to government and church leaders to instruct them how to end the ethnic hatred simmering in their country. She warned them that Rwanda would become &“a river of blood&” —a land of unspeakable carnage —if the hatred of the people was not quickly quelled by love. Some leaders listened, but very few believed: the prophetic and apocalyptic warnings tragically came true during 100 horrifying days of savage bloodletting and mass murder. After the genocide, and two decades of rigorous investigation, Our Lady of Kibeho became the first and only Vatican-approved Marian (that is, related to the Virgin Mary) site in all of Africa. But the story still remains largely unknown. Now, Immaculée Ilibagiza plans to change all that. She made many pilgrimages to Kibeho both before and after the holocaust, personally witnessed true miracles, and spoke with a number of the visionaries themselves. What she&’s discovered will deeply touch your heart.
