World Regional Geography

by Royal Berglee

World Regional Geography: People, Places and Globalization is designed for students to experience and study as much of the world as possible within a limited amount of time. It gives students the fundamental concepts and the latest data regarding world places in a concise, easy-to-read format. This textbook focuses on the primary issues that have created our cultural and societal structures, and presents them within a framework for global understanding. A pattern of development is outlined from the imprint that European colonialism had on culture to the impact that giant retail corporations like Wal-Mart have on consumerism.

Writing about Literature through Theory

by John Pennington Ryan Cordell

Writing about Literature through Theory by Pennington and Cordell is the first introduction to literature text to embrace both the best of print culture and the opportunities of the digital age, while being grounded in the rhetoric and composition field pertaining to the developmental writing process. It is also unique because it uses literary theory as the foundation for students’ development as critical thinkers and writers. Following Gerald Graff’s ideas in “Disliking Books at an Early Age,” Writing about Literature through Theory uses theoretical approaches to open literary texts up to students across the disciplines. Writing about Literature through Theory focuses on writing as a process, and each chapter includes the following:

Flap Your Wings (Beginner Books(R))

by P. D. Eastman

When a strange egg appears in their nest, Mr. and Mrs. Bird kindly take it upon themselves to raise the "baby bird" inside. But when the egg hatches, the Birds are in for a big surprise--"Junior" is the oddest-looking baby bird they've ever seen--with big, longjawsfull of teeth and an appetite to match. In fact, he looks more like a babyalligatorthan a baby bird! Nevertheless, the devoted Birds run themselves ragged feeding Junior until he gets so big, he must leave the nest or it will collapse underneath him. But how can Junior fly without wings? To the delight of the Birds--and readers!--the dilemma is solved when Junior takes off from a branch overlooking a pond.

Hall Of Fame

by EDITED BY DAVID HORSBURGH Notes exercises by MEERA SHENOY

Students who come to the PUC classes of our Universities, if they are to make the rapid improvement in English which so many academic disciplines of today demand, need plenty of reading material. Such material should be written with two-main aims: it should be interesting, and it should be comprehensible. This book has been produced to provide such material. The book contains short accounts of the lives or episodes from the lives, of seven men and one woman who, by their qualities of mind and heart, have presented an imperishable example of what man is capable of in terms of the great human values. Of the men, two are from India and one each from Greece, Germany, France, Russia and America; and the woman is probably the greatest that France has ever produced. Unfortunately the lives of great men are often presented as a series of dull facts. This book tries to avoid dullness and to create for the reader, through conversation and dramatised anecdote, the essential flavour of their greatness.

Introduction To Commutative Algebra

by Michael Atiyah I. G. Macdonald

This book grew out of a course of lectures given to third year undergraduates at Oxford University and it has the modest aim of producing a rapid introduction to the subject. It is designed to be read by students who have had a first elementary course in general algebra. On the other hand, it is not intended as a substitute for the more voluminous tracts such as Zariski-Samuel or Bourbaki. We have concentrated on certain central topics, and large areas, such as field theory, are not touched. In content we cover rather more ground than Northcott and our treatment is substantially different in that, following the modern trend, we put more emphasis on modules and localization.

Introduction to Differential Geometry and Riemannian Geometry (Mathematical Expositions #16)

by Erwin Kreyszig

This book provides an introduction to the differential geometry of curves and surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space and to n-dimensional Riemannian geometry. Based on Kreyszig's earlier book Differential Geometry, it is presented in a simple and understandable manner with many examples illustrating the ideas, methods, and results.

Among the topics covered are vector and tensor algebra, the theory of surfaces, the formulae of Weingarten and Gauss, geodesics, mappings of surfaces and their applications, and global problems. A thorough investigation of Reimannian manifolds is made, including the theory of hypersurfaces.
Interesting problems are provided and complete solutions are given at the end of the book together with a list of the more important formulae. Elementary calculus is the sole prerequisite for the understanding of this detailed and complete study in mathematics.

The Story of the Christian Church

by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut

No institution has spanned more centuries and more continents than the Christian church. Its dramatic story is one of bloodshed and peace, corruption and purity. Here Dr. Hurlbut retells this story in an objective, concise, and clear style, emphasizing the spirit of the church, its growth and maturation, and the causes leading to historic events and their resulting influence. Accurate, up-to-date, and vividly presented, Hurlbut's Story of the Christian Church traces the six general periods of church history from A. D. 30 to the present day. A concluding section, covering the period since Dr. Hurlbut's death, has been added in this revised edition, thus giving the reader a complete, easily understood overview of the Christian church. Designed for two audiences, this book contains outlines and references in the margins to aid the student or teacher along with a continuous narrative and numerous illustrations for the general reader. It is ideal for Sunday school use, since it includes suggested outlines and review questions for each chapter at the end of the book.

Colonial Empires

by Fieldhouse

The character and style of this book were largely dictated by two circumstances. First, because it is one volume of an integrated series - the Fischer Weltgeschichte - its length is strictly limited and the subject-matter has to be related to that of other volumes. As a result, the treatment of most issues is necessarily very brief and the balance between different colonies and periods of time does not always reflect their intrinsic importance

Calculus On Manifolds

by Michael Spivak

This little book is especially concerned with those portions of "advanced calculus" in which the subtlety of the concepts and methods makes rigor difficult to attain at an elementary level. The approach taken here uses elementary versions of modern methods found in sophisticated mathematics. The formal prerequisites include only a term of linear algebra, a nodding acquaintance with the notation of set theory, and a respectable first-year calculus course (one which at least mentions the least upper bound (sup) and greatest lower bound (inf) of a set of real numbers). Beyond this a certain (perhaps latent) rapport with abstract mathematics will be found almost essential.

Advisory: Bookshare has learned that this book offers only partial accessibility. We have kept it in the collection because it is useful for some of our members. To explore further access options with us, please contact us through the Book Quality link on the right sidebar.
