Gli Angeli di Wakán Tanka: una ternera storia per capire la relazione tra uomo e cane

by Orlando Eijo

Global Animal Law from the Margins: International Trade in Animals and their Bodies (Law, Justice and Ecology)

by Iyan Offor

This book critically engages the emerging field of global animal law from the perspective of an intersectional ethical framework. Reconceptualising global animal law, this book argues that global animal law overrepresents views from the west as it does not sufficiently engage views from the Global South, as well as from Indigenous and other marginalised communities. Tracing this imbalance to the early development of animal law’s reaction to issues of international trade, the book elicits the anthropocentrism and colonialism that underpin this bias. In response, the book outlines a new, intersectional, second wave of animal ethics. Incorporating marginalised viewpoints, it elevates the field beyond the dominant concern with animal welfare and rights. And, drawing on aspects of decolonial thought, earth jurisprudence, intersectionality theory and posthumanism, it offers a fundamental rethinking of the very basis of global animal law. The book's critical, yet practical, new approach to global animal law will appeal to animal law and environmental law experts, legal theorists, and those working in the areas of animal studies and ecology.

Global Challenges in Integrated Coastal Zone Management

by Einar Dahl Josianne Støttrup

Growing pressure from increasingly diverse human activities coupled with climate change impacts threaten the functional integrity of coastal ecosystems around the globe. A multi-disciplinary approach towards understanding drivers, pressures and impacts in the coastal zone requires effective integration of data and information in policy and management, combining expertise from nature and social science, to reach a balanced and sustainable development of the coastal zone. This important book comprises the proceedings of The International Symposium on Integrated Coastal Zone Management, which took place in Arendal, Norway between 3-7 July 2011. The main objective of the Symposium was to present current knowledge and to address issues on advice and management related to the coastal zone. The major themes of papers included in this book are: Coastal habitats and ecosystem services Adaptation/mitigation to change in coastal systems Coastal governance Linking science and management Comprising a huge wealth of information, this timely and well-edited volume is essential reading for all those involved in coastal zone management around the globe. All libraries in research establishments and universities where marine, aquatic and environmental sciences, and fisheries and aquatic sciences are studied and taught will need copies of this important volume on their shelves.

Global Change and the Terrestrial Biosphere: Achievements and Challenges

by H. H. Shugart F. I. Woodward

Global climate change challenges ecologists to synthesize what we know to solve a problem with deep historical roots in our discipline. In ecology, the question, “How do terrestrial ecosystems interact with the other earth systems to produce planetary change?” has sufficient depth to be the focal challenge. This central question is sharpened further as the changes that we may be manifesting upon our planet’s systems of land, sea, air and ice can have potential consequences for the future of human civilization. This book provides the depth of the history of global ecology and reviews the breadth of the ideas being studied today. Each chapter starts with a brief narrative about a scientist whose work traces forward into today’s issues in global ecosystems. The discussions are framed in a growing realization that we may be altering the way our planet functions almost before we have gained the necessary knowledge of how it works at all.

Global Climate Change and Terrestrial Invertebrates

by Scott N. Johnson T. Hefin Jones

Invertebrates perform such vital roles in global ecosystems—and so strongly influence human wellbeing—that biologist E.O. Wilson was prompted to describe them as “little things that run the world.” As they are such powerful shapers of the world around us, their response to global climate change is also pivotal in meeting myriad challenges looming on the horizon—everything from food security and biodiversity to human disease control. This book presents a comprehensive overview of the latest scientific knowledge and contemporary theory relating to global climate change and terrestrial invertebrates. Featuring contributions from top international experts, this book explores how changes to invertebrate populations will affect human decision making processes across a number of crucial issues, including agriculture, disease control, conservation planning, and resource allocation. Topics covered include methodologies and approaches to predict invertebrate responses, outcomes for disease vectors and ecosystem service providers, underlying mechanisms for community level responses to global climate change, evolutionary consequences and likely effects on interactions among organisms, and many more. Timely and thought-provoking, Global Climate Change and Terrestrial Invertebrates offers illuminating insights into the profound influence the simplest of organisms may have on the very future of our fragile world.

Global One Health and Infectious Diseases: An Interdisciplinary Practitioner’s Guide (CRC One Health One Welfare)

by William E. Sander

While many terms relate to One Health, the idea remains the same: to think outside a chosen area of specialty and work collaboratively as part of a team to improve health status around the world. This involves the collective effort of physicians, veterinarians, public health practitioners, ecologists, anthropologists, social workers, economists, and many others. Collectively, these are the Global One Health practitioners.Through the lens of infectious disease, this book brings together the diverse range of topics necessary to be an effective global health practitioner at the intersection of human and animal health, particularly in developing countries. It explores what an aspiring or mid-career practitioner should be aware of when working with infectious diseases, including technical skills, cultural competency, capacity building, big data, and understanding the landscape and history of global health. Each chapter focuses on a specific area of necessary knowledge with background information, case examples, and resources to use moving forward. An important reference for upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and early practitioners in human, animal, and public health, this text highlights the competencies rather than focusing on the problems in Global One Health. It provides a blueprint of areas that the reader should pay attention to, particularly in the realm of infectious diseases.Chapter 13 ‘One Health Education, Training, and Capacity Building’ is available to read Open Access at https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781032140674.
