Gregory Bateson on Relational Communication: From Octopuses to Nations (Biosemiotics #20)

by Phillip Guddemi

This book develops Gregory Bateson’s ideas regarding “communication about relationship” in animals and human beings, and even nations. It bases itself on Bateson’s theory of relational communication, as he described it in the zoosemiotics of octopus, mammals, birds, and human beings. This theory includes, for example, the roles of metaphor, play, analog and digital communication, metacommunication, and Laws of Form. It is organized around a letter from Gregory Bateson to his fellow cybernetic thinker Warren McCulloch at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In this letter Bateson argued that what we would today call zoosemiotics, including Bateson’s own (previously unpublished) octopus research, should be made a basis for understanding the relationship between the two blocs of the Cold War. Accordingly the book shows how Bateson understood interactive processes in the biosemiotics of conflict and peacemaking, which are analyzed using examples from recent animal studies, from primate studies, and from cultural anthropology. The Missile Crisis itself is described in terms of Bateson’s critique of game theory which he felt should be modified by an understanding of the zoosemiotics of relational communication. The book also includes a previously unpublished piece by Gregory Bateson on wolf behavior and metaphor/ abduction.

Grey Wolf, Red Wolf

by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent

The haunting howl of a wolf on a moonlit night has evoked fear and fascination in humans since the beginning of time. The wolf's success as a hunter and its elusive nature have made it easy for people to assume the worst about the animal. Even our fairy tales portray the wolf as evil. Only now are we beginning to understand this mysterious creature, and the truth is even more intriguing than the myths. Two species of wolf are native to North America, the gray wolf and the red wolf. Both are shy, intelligent animals that prefer to avoid humans. Both play an important part in the natural food chain, controlling populations of prey animals such as deer. But to the white settlers, the wolf was a dangerous competitor, and for three hundred years they hunted it mercilessly. Today, only in portions of Canada and Alaska does the wolf thrive in healthy numbers. In the 1980s, however, both species began to make a tenuous comeback in the lands they once roamed. But their presence has sparked a heated controversy between environmentalists who are pleased to see the wolves return and others who would prefer that these animals stay away forever. Here in careful detail Dorothy Hinshaw Patent presents a revealing look at the wolf in America today.

by Emily Jenkins

"But what Emily Jenkins and Chris Appelhans&’ lyrical collaboration is really about is the intoxicating thrill of friendship, and boundless joy of play..." –The New York Times A &“merry read-aloud.&” –The Wall Street JournalWinner of the 2018 Zena Sutherland Award for Best TextFrom a heavyweight author and illustrator duo comes a delicious tongue twister of a picture book that features a little round greyhound and a little round groundhog. With very spare, incredibly lively language, this is an entertaining read-aloud, with two amazing—and oh-so-adorable—characters at its heart. When a greyhound meets a groundhog, wordplay and crazy antics ensue. The two animals, much like kids, work themselves into a frenzy as they whirl around and around one another. (Around, round hound. Around, groundhog!) The pace picks up (Around and around and astound and astound!), until they ultimately wear themselves out. &“Jenkins&’s masterful text is deceptively simple.&” —NPR on Toys Meet Snow by Emily Jenkins &“Appelhans, whose career up to now has been in animated films such as Coraline, is a revelation.&” —Booklist, Starred, on Sparky!, illustrated by Chris Appelhans &“Appelhans makes an auspicious picture book debut with strikingly beautiful watercolor and pencil illustrations. His style, reminiscent of Jon Klassen&’s, incorporates a muted color palette, but with a slightly softer, rounder quality, while also weaving in visual deadpan humor.&” —The Horn Book
