Bear in a Bathrobe

by Maddie Frost

A delightful new picture book that encourages readers to step outside of their comfort zone with the help of a security blanket and some good pals, from powerhouse creator Maddie Frost. It's wintertime and Bear is ready to stay indoors and cozy up in his bathrobe until spring. His bathrobe is the ultimate indoor experience because it keeps his ears toasty, has pockets for all of his snacking essentials, and allows for maximum relaxation all season long. His friends look like they're having so much fun skating outside, and he could join them if he wanted to, but he's too busy having quality indoor alone time in his bathrobe to even think about going out into the wild. Besides, what if he fell and hurt himself, or slipped through the ice, or skated too far away from home? Winter is clearly the time for hibernation, not outdoor adventures. But when Bear's friends share what makes them feel safe when they tackle new and sometimes scary experiences, Bear might just be ready to venture into the great outdoors and risk falling on the ice.Maddie Frost's new picture book invites readers to courageously tackle new--and slightly frightening--experiences and reminds them that it's not about whether you fall or not, but how you get back up.

Rescuing the tiny cub from the well was the easy part; now they need to care for it until the people from the bear-rescue sanctuary can make it safely through the fires to pick it up. The cub turns out to be exactly what one would expect of a wild animal—a huge handful! The latest Orca Echoes early chapter book from award-winning author Eric Walters was inspired by Eric’s visit to a wildlife sanctuary in Northern British Columbia. Bear: Myth, Animal, Icon

by Wolf D. Storl

Since the beginning of human history, bears have been regarded as animals of great power. Ethnobotanist and cultural anthropologist Wolf Storl, who spent years in the wilderness with bears, explores the fascinating relationship between bears and humans, including the history, mythology, healing lore, and biology of this formidable creature. Storl takes the reader from the bear caves of the Neanderthals to the bear-worshipping Siberian tribes of today, from the extinct cave bear to the modern teddy bear. Bears were traditionally seen as a kind of "forest human" under whose shaggy fur a king or a god was hidden, he explains. Vividly illustrating the power of myths and fairy tales to reveal more than scientific treatises about the true nature of beings--especially in the case of bears--Storl restores this magnificent animal to its rightful place at the forefront of the human imagination as well as among the dwellers of the forest.

Bearing Witness: Ruth Harrison and British Farm Animal Welfare (1920–2000) (Palgrave Studies in the History of Social Movements)

by Claas Kirchhelle

This open access book is the biography of one of Britain’s foremost animal welfare campaigners and of the world of activism, science, and politics she inhabited. In 1964, Ruth Harrison’s bestseller Animal Machines triggered a gear change in modern animal protection by popularising the term ‘factory farming’ alongside a new way of thinking about animal welfare. Here, historian Claas Kirchhelle explores Harrison’s avant-garde upbringing, Quakerism, and how animal welfare debates were linked to concerns about the wider ethical and environmental trajectories of post-war Britain. Breaking the myth of Harrison as a one-hit wonder, Kirchhelle reconstructs Harrison’s 46 years of campaigning and the rapid transformation of welfare politics and science during this time. Exacerbated by Harrison’s own actions, the decades after 1964 saw a polarisation of animalpolitics, a professionalisation of British activism, and the rise of a new animal welfare science. Harrison’s belief in incremental reform allowed her to form ties to leading scientists but alienated her from more radical campaigners. Many of her 1964 demands gradually became part of mainstream politics. However, farm animal welfare’s increasing marketisation has also led to a relative divorce from the wider agenda of social improvement that Harrison once bore witness to. This is the first book to cast light on the interlinked histories of British farm animal welfare activism, science, and legislation. Its unique scope allows it to go beyond existing accounts of modern British animal welfare and will be of interest to those interested in animal welfare, environmentalism, and the behavioural sciences.
