The Etchings of Wilfred Fairclough (Routledge Revivals)

First published 1990, this volume consists of an introductory essay by Ian Lowe and a comprehensive catalogue of all Wilfred Fairclough’s prints, some 140, from 1932 to the present (1990). Al the prints are illustrated in the body of the catalogue for ease of identification and 48 are also reproduced as large format duotone illustrations. From the Royal College of Art, Wilfred Fairclough won the Rome Scholarship in Engraving in 1934 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in the same week. His engravings, inspired by his travels in Italy, Spain and Germany in the 1930s, were succeeded by etchings of British subjects and topography, notably of Oxford, until, with a Leverhulme grant, he returned to Italy in 1961. Increasingly, thereafter he has found his subjects and his inspiration in Venice, in concerts, restaurant interiors, and the Carnival, and in Lucerne, in markets and the human figure. Wilfred Fairclough has exhibited consistently at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and at the Royal Academy (where his most recent Venetian subject, Venice Carnival. Clowns, sold out in three days). Now aged 83 he is still working. There has been no slackening off in his productivity nor in the quality of his work since he retired from teaching at the Kingston College of Art in 1972. The Catalogue is based on his own meticulous records. It will be an essential source of information for all who are interested in his work as a printmaker. Elected an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1975, Ian Lowe worked in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford from 1962 until 1987. There he was responsible for the collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century British prints. He arranged and catalogued numerous exhibitions including those devoted to ~F.L. Griggs, R.S. Austin, Robin Tanner, Alan Gwynne-Jones and Richard Shirley Smith. His association with Wilfred Fairclough dates from 1974. His introductory essay is both biographical and an appreciation of Fairclough’s achievement as a printmaker. It is based on their correspondence, lectures, and meetings as well as on the study of the archives and records of the last sixty years.

Chowdhury analyzes Bangladeshi feminist films including Meherjaan, and Itihaash Konna (Daughters of History), as well as socially-engaged films by activist-filmmakers including Jonmo Shathi (Born Together), and Shadhinota (A Certain Liberation), to show how war films of Bangladesh can generate possibilities for gender justice. Chowdhury argues that justice-driven films are critical to understanding and negotiating the layered meanings and consequences of catastrophic human suffering yet at the same time they hint at subjectivities and identities that are not reducible to the politics of suffering. Rather, they are key to creating an alternative and disruptive archive of feminist knowledge—a sensitive witnessing, responsible spectatorship, and just responsibility across time, and space. Drawing on Black and transnational feminist critiques, Chowdhury explores questions around women’s place, social roles, and modes of participation in war as well as the visual language through which they become legible as victims/subjects of violence and agents of the nation. This book outlines, within the Italian national framework, the current and potential paths oriented towards a new concept of Architectural Heritage, through actions referring to Innovation and Experimentation and Protection and Transformation of the Architectural Heritage. The development of the themes is articulated in two sessions dealing with the aspects related to the analysis and mapping of Architectural Heritage to face the context of the current Climate Crisis and the development of projects and experimentations oriented to the Green and Digital Transition. The evolution of the concept of Heritage, as conceived by the United Nations 2030 Agenda and in the Green Deal and New European Bauhaus, aimed at constructing an inclusive and universally recognised definition to support supranational objectives of sustainable human development, gives rise to innovative strategies, methodologies and technologies that—in a direction of mitigation, contrast and adaptation to climate change—allow for the safeguard, renewed management and a hope for valorisation of Heritage on a national scale. In this direction, the understanding of Architectural Heritage as a 'non-renewable resource' determines the need to activate design experimentation laboratories oriented towards regeneration, articulated and complex, which require, in order to respond to the challenges posed by our era, a sensitive and dialogic multidisciplinary vision of a holistic type. In fact, on the one hand, it is necessary to redefine the usability and management methods of built heritage through the adoption of digital, mobility, energy, ecological, social, green and blue infrastructures; on the other hand, it is necessary to introduce new qualitative and quantitative parameters and performance indicators, adequate to verify the validity of the implemented strategies in a perspective of adaptation to climate change, able to clarify contents, processes and tools to contrast future risks. The pursuit of these objectives refers to the innovation of training paths, professionalising procedures, administrative regulations, and public policies that involve citizens and the private partnership towards a different project qualification and empowerment of stakeholders, inhabitants, professionals, and clients. The Technological Project makes it possible to activate different interventions aimed at acting, in an integrated manner, on assets, context and communities, according to an approach that reinterprets them on a common score, as proposed by the European Next Generation programme in three priority aspects: digitalisation and innovation, environmental transition, increased resilience and social sustainability of national economies. In this scenario, the interventions aimed at outlining sustainable development actions will have to place these concepts at the centre in a harmonious vision that starts from the recognition and enhancement of the Architectural Heritage, recognising it as a fundamental asset of the territories.

By engaging communities "differently," archaeology has explicitly adopted an ethical outlook, purportedly striving to overcome its colonial ontology and metaphysics. In this new scenario, respect for other historical systems/worldviews and social accountability appear to be prominent. Being ethical in archaeological terms in the multicultural context has become mandatory, so much that most professional, international and national archaeological associations have ethical principles as guiding forces behind their openness towards social sectors traditionally ignored or marginalized by their practices. This powerful new ethics--its newness is based, to a large extent, in that it is the first time that archaeological ethics is explicitly stated, as if it didn't exist before--emanates from metropolitan centers, only to be adopted elsewhere. In this regard, it is worth probing the very nature of the dominant multicultural ethics in disciplinary practices because (a) it is at least suspicious that at the same time archaeology has tuned up with postmodern capitalist/market needs, and (b) the discipline (along with its ethical principles) is contested worldwide by grass-roots organizations and social movements. Can archaeology have socially committed ethical principles at the same time that it strengthens its relationship with the market and capitalism? Is this coincidence just merely haphazard or does it obey more structural rules? The papers in this book try to answer these two questions by examining praxis-based contexts in which archaeological ethics unfolds.
