Evaluation of the Built Environment for Sustainability

by P. S. Brandon P. L. Lombardi V. Bentivegna

Sustainability in the built environment is a major issue facing policy-makers, planners, developers and designers in the UK, Europe and worldwide. The measuring of buildings and cities for sustainability becomes increasingly important as pressure for green, sustainable development translates into policy and legislation. The problems of such measurement and evaluation are presented by the authors in contributions which move from the general to the particular, e.g. from a general framework for an environmentally sustainable form of urban development to a specific input-output model application to environmental problems. The book is divided into three parts: the first covers city models and sustainable systems - research programmes, environmental policies, green corporations and collaborative strategies to make urban development more sustainable; part two discusses the problems of evaluating the built environment in planning and construction, covering economic and environmental methods and construction, development and regeneration processes; part three illustrates a number of applications using different approaches and techniques and referring to a range of environmental aspects of the natural and built environment, from maintaining historic buildings to transport management and air pollution monitoring.

Evangeline Parish

by Jean S. Kiesel Jane F. Vidrine

Evangeline Parish is located near the center of Louisiana, between the prairies and wetlands of the south and the hills and piney woods of the north. Culturally, too, it embraces both the French south and the English north. Evangeline is relatively young among the parishes of Louisiana, having been carved from the western portion of St. Landry in 1910. It is named for Evangeline, the heroine of Longfellow's epic poem about the exile of the Acadians, many of whose descendants reside in Louisiana. Today, the people of Evangeline Parish remain close to the land, earning their livelihood from agriculture and forestry or small businesses. From outdoor recreation at Chicot State Park to the Courir de Mardi Gras in Mamou and Basile, and all the festivals in between, they know how to pass a good time.

Como la autora Madeline L'Engle escribió: "Quizás has de conocer la oscuridad antes de poder apreciar la luz".

Evans and Angola

by Cheryl Delano

Incorporated in 1821, the area that is now the town of Evans saw its first permanent settlers just prior to the War of 1812. The village of Angola developed later with the establishment of the railroad, which also brought industry, most notably the internationally known Emblem Bicycle Company. Lake Erie also drew visitors and residents to the area. The miles of shoreline were home to summer camps for adults, as well as children, and the wealthiest families in the city of Buffalo built their summer homes there. Prominent among these estates was Graycliff, the summer home of Darwin Martin, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. William H. Carrier, known as the "Father of Air-Conditioning" and the town's most famous resident, was born and educated in Evans and graduated from Angola High School in 1894.

Evans County

by Evans County Centennial Committee

How many counties can boast of having Georgia's first female sheriff and a town known as the "fruitcake capital of the world"? These distinctions, and many others, make Evans County unique. Evans, the 150th of Georgia's 159 counties, was created in 1914 from parts of Bulloch and Tattnall Counties. Its development was closely linked with agriculture and the growth of railroads, and the area towns of Daisy, Claxton, Hagan, and Bellville all began as train depots. Although Evans is one of Georgia's later and smaller counties, it offers a fine example of rural progress and friendly communities. As Evans County enters its centennial year, there is much to celebrate.

Evanston (Postcard History)

by Mimi M. Peterson

Enjoy a trip through historic Evanston. See how Davis Street and Sherman and Orrington Avenues appeared around the beginning of the 20th century. Learn how Fountain Square has evolved and how the Merrick Rose Garden is connected. See Northwestern University as it was founded, along with early Evanston's lakefront, city hall, library, and post office. Many of the buildings shown in this book are still standing, while others have been demolished. In some postcard views the stately elm trees of later decades are seen as saplings. The Library Plaza Hotel, North Shore Hotel, and Georgian Hotel are here as well, along with the historic schools, churches, train depots, and, of course, Grosse Point Lighthouse, which all helped shape the city in its formative years.

Evansville: The World War Ii Years (Images of America)

by Darrel Bigham

As we approach a new century and a new millennium, we should consider how people in American communities dreamed about and participated in the coming of the twentieth century 100 years ago. The focus of this work is Evansville--100 years ago the only emerging metropolis between Louisville and St. Louis, and then, as now, the radial center of a hinterland stretching in all directions from 75 to 125 miles. The book illustrates how the city landscape changed because of the early industrial era, how people made a living, how people related toeach other, and how they spent their leisure time. About one-fifth of the images in this collection focus on the residents of the Evansville region; the Tri-State of southwestern Indiana, western Kentucky, and southern Illinois, which has been Evansville'sservice area since the 1850s.

Evansville

by John Ehle Ruth Ann Montgomery

Evansville, settled in 1839, developed as an important agricultural trade center. Log cabins, farms, and small industries were built, and the population grew from less than 10 families in the beginning to nearly 5,000 people in 2009. Then and Now: Evansville is a unique look at how the community has changed from the 1900s to today. Ruth Ann Montgomery, author of Images of America: Evansville for Arcadia Publishing, is Evansville's historian. John Ehle, an Evansville resident for many years, has conducted interviews with local veterans and those who lived through the Great Depression.

Evansville (Images of America)

by Ruth Ann Montgomery

The Evansville area was settled in 1839 and the village platted in 1855 on the hopes that the railroad would come through. It was named for Evansville's first physician, Dr. John M. Evans. When the railroad arrived in 1863, Evansville's prosperity was assured. There were many opportunities for growth in agriculture, manufacturing, and commerce. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad offered passenger and freight service to major markets in Chicago and the West. Local farmers found national and international markets for their prizewinning livestock and produce. The Evansville Seminary and a strong public school system provided educational opportunities. Literary societies, churches, and veterans groups provided social activities. Talented 19th- and 20th-century architects and craftsmen were responsible for the fine collection of architectural styles in Evansville.

Even If it Kills Me: Martial Arts, Rock, and Roll, and Mortality

by Donovan Blair

Benjamin Franklin Award SILVER WINNER - 2017 This is the true story of a rock and roll musician who takes up taekwondo at forty-one years old. Doni Blair, bassist for the Toadies, knows he’s past his physical prime, but he’s determined to push himself and pursue his dream of becoming a martial artist—even if it kills him. As a kid Doni was obsessed with ninjas and kung fu movies. He and his brother took up taekwondo—there was no ninja school in Sherman, Texas. Classes were expensive, especially considering their parents’ tenuous employment status and fondness for alcohol. The family lived like “white-trash gypsies,” Blair writes, adding that he got good at moving furniture at three in the morning. The Blair kids loved taekwondo, but the family just couldn’t afford classes. Doni walked away from martial arts. Thirty years later, he’s walking back. “I’m not a kid anymore,” he writes. “I’m a middle-aged man trying to come to grips with being a middle-aged man. I’m not as fast as I used to be. It takes longer for the injuries to heal. I have to eat more bran.” Doni discovers the road to black belt is rough and, well, weird. He meets martial seekers of every sort. He has run-ins with a teenage savant who seems determined to break the author’s leg. He drives a van full of seven-year-olds for the dojang’s after-school program. They puke everywhere. Even If It Kills Me is smart and funny, introspective and irreverent. It blends rock and roll and taekwondo—two of the coolest things in the world.

An Evening in the Classroom: Notes Taken by Miss Taylor in One of the Classes of Painting

by Harvey Dunn

"Dunn, in his teaching, was more concerned with the essential spirit of work than with technical procedures. He never taught what kind of brushes or what kind of paint to use. It was merely whether the result had anything in common with the excitement of human existence." — Dean Cornwell, "the Dean of Illustrators" Illustrator and painter Harvey Dunn was deeply influenced by Howard Pyle and the teaching he received while at his school. Pyle's Brandywine students became some of the most important and well-regarded artists of the twentieth century, including N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Violet Oakley, and Jessie Willcox Smith. All studied alongside Dunn, and many of them would go on to teach. Dunn embraced Pyle's approach as an instructor and went on to influence the next generation of artists. During the course of an evening in 1934, while Dunn was teaching at Grand Central School of the Arts, one Miss Taylor, a witness to the class, recorded his comments and criticisms. These notes later surfaced in a slim, limited-edition volume. Enhanced by Dunn's striking woodcut images, the book provides a flavorful re-creation of the atmosphere in his classroom. An Evening in the Classroom is the best-preserved record of Dunn's critiques, and this handsome hardcover book will instruct and inspire artists, teachers and students, and art historians.

Event

by Slavoj Zizek

Which conditions must be met for us to perceive something as really existing? In a world that's constantly changing, is anything new really happening? Event-Space: Theatre Architecture and the Historical Avant-Garde

by Dorita Hannah

As the symbolists, constructivists and surrealists of the historical avant-garde began to abandon traditional theatre spaces and embrace the more contingent locations of the theatrical and political ‘event’, the built environment of a performance became not only part of the event, but an event in and of itself. Event-Space radically re-evaluates the avant garde’s championing of nonrepresentational spaces, drawing on the specific fields of performance studies and architectural studies to establish a theory of ‘performative architecture’. ‘Event’ was of immense significance to modernism’s revolutionary agenda, resisting realism and naturalism – and, simultaneously, the monumentality of architecture itself. Event-Space analyzes a number of spatiotemporal models central to that revolution, both illuminating the history of avant-garde performance and inspiring contemporary approaches to performance space.

Everett Ruess: His Short Life, Mysterious Death, and Astonishing Afterlife

by Philip L. Fradkin

Everett Ruess was twenty years old when he vanished into the canyonlands of southern Utah, spawning the myth of a romantic desert wanderer that survives to this day. It was 1934, and Ruess was in the fifth year of a quest to record wilderness beauty in works of art whose value was recognized by such contemporary artists as Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, and Edward Weston. From his home in Los Angeles, Ruess walked, hitchhiked, and rode burros up the California coast, along the crest of the Sierra Nevada, and into the deserts of the Southwest. In the first probing biography of Everett Ruess, acclaimed environmental historian Philip L. Fradkin goes beyond the myth to reveal the realities of Ruess's short life and mysterious death and finds in the artist's astonishing afterlife a lonely hero who persevered.

Evergreen (Images of America)

by John Steinle

Early settlers were drawn to the Evergreen area for its unsurpassed beauty and natural resources. Ranching and lumber were the initial basis for Evergreens economy in the 1800s, and wealthy summer residents built prestigious second homes there. By 1920, Evergreen became a tourist mecca through development of the Denver Mountain Parks system and famed hotels, resorts, and dude ranches. From 1920 to 1942, Evergreen was the epicenter of outdoor recreation in Colorado. After World War II, a unique array of volunteer arts, nature, and charity organizations was created by Evergreens people. A bohemian era in the 1960s and 1970s brought artists, musicians, and hippies, including Willie Nelson, to Evergreen. Explosive growth after completion of Interstate 70 led to development of new festivals and attractions, including the magnificent parks of the Jefferson County Open Space system. Evergreen still retains an atmosphere of the legendary Old West, from its boardwalk along Main Street to its annual Evergreen Rodeo and Rodeo Parade to its surviving area ranches.

The Everlasting People: G. K. Chesterton and the First Nations (Hansen Lectureship Series)

by Matthew J. Milliner

First Things Book of the Year award What does the cross of Christ have to do with the thunderbird? How might the life and work of Christian writer G. K. Chesterton shed light on our understanding of North American Indigenous art and history? This unexpected connection forms the basis of these discerning reflections by art historian Matthew Milliner. In this fifth volume in the Hansen Lectureship Series, Milliner appeals to Chesterton's life and work—including The Everlasting Man, his neglected poetry, his love for his native England, and his own visits to America—in order to understand and appreciate both Indigenous art and the complex, often tragic history of First Nations peoples, especially in the American Midwest. The Hansen Lectureship series offers accessible and insightful reflections by Wheaton College faculty on the transformative work of the Wade Center authors.
