Canadian Courage: True Stories of Canada's Everyday Heroes
by Linda PruessenInspiring true stories of Canadians who have bravely faced danger, adversity and injusticeWhen we think about courage, certain images come to mind: troops charging into battle; law enforcement facing down armed assailants; firefighters racing into a burning building. We think about those men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line for their country or for others, those remarkable people who run toward danger instead of away from it. But you don’t have to wear a uniform to be courageous. On any given day, ordinary Canadians exhibit courage in myriad ways. Some do so in the face of danger—like six-year-old Sophia LeBlanc, who, in the aftermath of a crash, escaped an upside-down and partially submerged minivan to get help for her family. Some do so by choosing to fight injustice instead of turning a blind eye—like McGill University student Tomas Jirousek, who supported other Indigenous students to push the school to change the troublesome name of its athletic teams. And some demonstrate courage when they overcome adversity—like Timea Nagy, whose experience as a survivor of human trafficking compelled her to become an advocate for others and a voice for change. In Canadian Courage: True Stories of Canada’s Everyday Heroes, you’ll meet thirty-five remarkable people—men, women, children and even an animal or two—who have shown remarkable courage in the face of danger, injustice and adversity. Their stories are moving, thrilling and, most of all, inspiring. They’ll leave you wondering whether you too have the ability to be courageous when it counts.

A joyous romp through the back pages of Canadian quirkiness, Canadian Folk provides a fresh look at the saints, sinners, oddballs, and outright nutbars who have populated the Canadian landscape. They were perpetually northbound or south; they were inveterate walkers, or world class runners, millionaires in ill-advised Citroen half-tracks. The restless characters who spanned those miles and who fill the pages of this book were fuelled by the ambitions, the doubts, and the certainties of their times, a certainty that now seems unfathomable to us and frequently maddening. From doomed explorers to celebrated poets of cheese, this collection provides a fascinating look at the eminent and no-so-eminent characters who came before us and left their colourful mark on Canada’s history.

But fifty years later, after careers, marriage, children, divorce and several trips to Canada (but never with each other), an opportunity arose for a month in Canada - together! Canadian Political Science Association Conference on Statistics 1961: Papers
by William Hood John SawyerIn 1958 the Canadian Political Science Association established a committee to look into ways and means of improving statistical research in the Social Sciences in Canada. One of the ways in which the committee thought this could be done was by establishing an annual forum where papers could be presented and discussed. The papers given at the first in 1960 have already appeared, and the second volume contains six of the ten papers given at Sir George Williams University, Montreal, in 1961. The papers are diverse alike in subject and statistical method, but most are concerned with recent population and labour movements. The papers are: "Regional Aspects of Labour Mobility in Canada, 1956-1959" by H.F. Greenway and G.W. Wheatley; "The Flow of Migration among the Provinces of Canada, 1951-1961" by Yoshiko Kasashara; "La Détermination des zones agricoles sous-marginates" by Gérald Fortin; "Some Calculations Relating to Trends and Fluctuations in the Post-War Canadian Labour Market" by Frank T. Denton; "Inter-Industry Estimates of Canadian Imports, 1949-1958" by T.I. Matuszewski, Paul R. Pitts, and John A. Swayer; and "Population Migration in the Atlantic Provinces" by Kari Levitt.
Canadian Primal: Poets, Places, and the Music of Meaning
by Mark DickinsonOver the past few decades, a group of writers we might call the Thinking and Singing poets have stood at the forefront of poetry in Canada. These five poets – Dennis Lee, Don McKay, Robert Bringhurst, Jan Zwicky, and Tim Lilburn – are major voices in an era of ecological devastation and spiritual unease. Their diverse, questioning work suggests new ways to confront some of the most pressing issues of our time.In vibrant prose, Mark Dickinson explores the relationship between the lives of these poets and their writing, examining their intersecting careers and friendships, and the ways they learned from and challenged one another. Canadian Primal uses an unconventional approach, blending biography with literary analysis and drawing from meetings and correspondence with each poet over many years to trace the people and events that inspired the creation of important texts. Dickinson tracks how each of the writers arrived at poetry as a way of being, and at the heart of their poetics he finds both a musical intelligence and the crucial importance of the land.Canadian Primal is literary biography reconceived as an adventure of the mind, body, and spirit. Ebullient, intelligent, and eminently readable, it reminds us that we can live on the earth in a different way, true to the defining experiences of our lives, surrounded by meaning and presence beyond our imagining.

Canaris: The Life and Death of Hitler's Spymaster
by Michael MuellerThis biography of the Nazi intelligence chief who spied both for and against Hitler examines the life of one of WWII&’s most intriguing figures. An early supporter of Adolph Hitler, Wilhelm Canaris became chief of German military intelligence before secretly turning against the Nazi regime at the start of World War II. Throughout his career, few who knew him ever understood his plans. Even today, historians find Wilhelm Canaris a man of mystery among Hitler&’s top lieutenants. The great protector of German opposition to Hitler, Canaris was also the one who prepared the Third Reich&’s major expansion plans. While he motivated those who were eager to bring down Hitler, he also hunted them as conspirators—one of the many contradictions he was forced to live with in order to stay in control of the Nazi spy network. This superbly researched biography follows Canaris's career from his first dabbling in the intelligence business during World War I through his time as head of the Abwehr to his execution in 1945 for his role in the July Plot. A highly readable account, it tells the story of an apparently old-fashioned naval officer, drawn into the web of the Nazi regime.

Buckley, the editor, began a column called "Notes & Asides” in which he personally replied to the most notable and outrageous correspondence. Culled from four decades of the column, Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription includes exchanges with such well-known figures as Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, John Kenneth Galbraith, A. M. Rosenthal, Auberon Waugh, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. , and many others. Combative, brilliant, and uproariously funny, Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription represents Buckley at his mischievous best.
Canceled Lives: My Father, My Scandal, and Me
by Blake BaileyA canceled bestselling author&’s highly personal account of his public scandal—a scandal that was reported on the front page of the New York Times and throughout the world. Blake Bailey grew up in the shadow of his father, Burck, an eminent litigator—president of the Oklahoma Bar Association and widely considered a sort of real-life Atticus Finch: &“His conduct, honesty, integrity, and courtesy best exemplify and represent the highest standards of the legal profession,&” his colleagues commended him in a 1989 award citation. As for Blake, he was a late bloomer who finally came into his own as a writer. His fourth literary biography, Philip Roth, was published on April 6, 2021, and hailed as &“a narrative masterwork&” by Cynthia Ozick on the front page of the New York Times Book Review. The 900-page book debuted at #12 on the Times Nonfiction Bestseller list. But success came at a terrible price: because of revelations in Bailey&’s biography, many were calling for Roth and his work to be &“canceled,&” while others thought Bailey had been overly sympathetic and even &“complicitous&” with his subject&’s worst failings. Soon rumors exploded on the internet about Bailey&’s own private life, and within days he himself was roundly canceled. Canceled Lives is the story of a father and son who had much in common—for better and for worse—and who supported each other in the midst of terrible family strife, including the drug addiction and suicide of Blake&’s older brother, Scott. Having achieved a success in life that Blake, at least, never expected, both father and son were ravaged by the ordeal of Blake&’s spectacular public humiliation.
Cancer Moon: How I Survived the Best Years of My Life
by Jenna TicoFor fans of You&’ll Grow Out of It, this comedic patchwork of flash-prose, essay, and poetry snapshots a millennial performance artist&’s journey from late bloomer to adult, inviting twenty-something women to embrace their self-worth, sexuality, and own-your-weird mentality.Growing up in Santa Barbara, California, way too close to the Hollywood dream machine, Jenna Tico&’s self-worth wanes to invisibility when her identity becomes enmeshed with validation from celebrities and spiritual F-boys . . . until she claws her way back to empowerment. Here, Tico shares vulnerable personal essays, stories, and poetry—all grouped following the cycles of the moon—chronicling her journey from late bloomer to full grownup. Observing the world of twenty-something relationships from perspectives as diverse as a bachelorette houseboat, a music festival afterparty, and the airplane ride to a death bed, she validates the experiences of women who feel like they have been abandoned by the generation that came before them. Her self-reflective stories encourage healthy life choices for young women without telling them where, what, or how to live their lives—and always with a healthy dash of humor on the side. Simultaneously hilarious and poignant (without the whiff of morality play), Cancer Moon invites readers to embrace their twenties—aka the &“age of wallowing&”—as a humorous and necessary step toward understanding how we become who we want to be in the world.
