Performance Anxiety in Media Culture: The Trauma of Appearance and the Drama of Disappearance
by Steven BaileyPerformance Anxiety in Media Culture explores the culture of performance anxiety in the media-saturated contemporary world. It uses comparative case studies including film, social media, and popular music to examine the ways that personal concern regarding self-presentation becomes transformed into shared cultural expressions through the use of media technologies. Three initial chapters are dedicated to exploring the work of Erving Goffman, Jacques Lacan, and Jean Baudrillard as critical for a thorough understanding of how implications of a range of recent transformations in the methods for staging social performances are staged and in the ways that they are experienced and interpreted by others. Three subsequent chapters explore diverse case studies in the culture of performance anxiety: the representation of such anxieties in recent French cinema, the appearance of them in the world of fashion-based 'outfit of the day' blogs, and the attempt to refine a more fixed social persona in the nostalgic culture of rockabilly music.

Performance-Based Financing Toolkit
by Bruno Meessen Robert Soeters György Bèla FritschePerformance-based financing (PBF) approaches have expanded rapidly in lower-and middle income countries, and especially in Africa. The number of countries has grown from three in 2006 to 32 in 2013. PBF schemes are flourishing and cause considerable demand for technical assistance in executing these health reforms in a rational and accountable manner. Currently there is a lack of knowledge among many health reformers of how to implement performance-based financing pilot projects, and scale them up intelligently. In a context of tremendous demand for solid design and implementation experience and given the rapid expansion of results-based financing (RBF) programs, there is an urgent need to build capacity in designing and implementing PBF programs. As yet there has been little attempt to gather the learning from these experiences together in one volume and, moreover, in a form that serves as a guide to implementers. This toolkit answers the most pressing issues related to the supply-side RBF programs of which PBF forms part.

by Glen B. AllemanProjects fail to meet goals for many reasons: poor time and budget performance, failure to deal with complexity, uncontrolled changes in scope... Even the most experienced project managers can be caught off guard in the presence of these forces. Performance-Based Project Management shows readers how they can increase the probability of project success, detailing a straightforward plan for avoiding surprises, forecasting performance, identifying risk, and taking corrective action to keep a project a success. Based on the "Five Immutable Principles of Project Success," this book shows project leaders how to assess the business capabilities needed for a project; plan and schedule the work; determine the resources required to complete on time and on budget; identify and manage risks to success; and measure performance in units meaningful to decision makers. Project managers will learn the core practices for each principle, as well as associated processes, so that they can lay the foundation for project success from the start. They'll discover how each process produces "artifacts," which provide feedback as to whether everything is going well--and if not, when and how it will be fixed.
