Hijacked
by David A. KesslerMost people believe that it's natural to gain a lot of weight as we get older. But this is not true. Kessler knows it's not true because until about 30 years ago, we did not have a weight problem in North America. In fact, throughout history, the human body weight stayed pretty much the same. People ate the amount of food they needed and no more. Then, in the 1980s, something changed. North Americans started gaining a lot of weight. What happened in such a short time to add so many millions of pounds to so many millions of people? Something had changed in North America, but it wasn't us. It was our food. These processed foods - loaded with sugar, fat, and salt - make it almost impossible for some people to stop eating. Many years ago, the food industry managed to figure out that they could sell more food if it had a lot of sugar, fat, and salt in it. Good food should make you feel full and satisfied. But foods that are high in sugar, fat, and salt have the opposite effect on many people. Instead of easing our hunger, these foods make us want to eat more. Even when we're full, even when we're not hungry, we feel the need to eat. Hijacked helps us understand what it is that we're eating and helps us train our brains to know when to stop eating and to stop craving food.

Hilde on the Record: Memoir of a Kid Crime Reporter
by Hilde LysiakWhen seven-year-old Hilde Lysiak found out her new town didn't have a paper, she grabbed a notepad and began to work. Hilde Kate Lysiak spent her early childhood in New York City with a passion for journalism. When her family moved to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, Hilde didn't complain. Instead, she started reporting. Hilde began by reporting on the birth of her sister, the newest resident on Orange Street, then began expanding her coverage to the entire city. She interviewed hundreds of locals in her effort to deliver "All the News Fit for Orange Street": a seed exchange at the local library, a fundraiser for a hospital's neonatal unit, a fire at a church, and a mysterious vandal destroying landscaping on city property. Everything changed when Hilde received a tip that a terrible crime had happened just blocks from her house. By using the tools she had learned on the beat, the enterprising young reporter was able to confirm the facts and get the important information out to the public several hours before the other local media. Hilde was proud of her work, but not everyone in her small town felt that way. Cyberbullies targeted her, zeroing in on her age and gender. Hilde considered ignoring them but decided she had to stand up to the haters to protect the reputation she had worked so hard to earn. Her response went viral, and nearly every major news organization took notice. Hilde hasn't let anything stand in her way since.

Hill Hawk Hattie
by Clara Gillow ClarkA fascinating historical novel rides the rapids of a tumultuous father-daughter relationship as the spirited young Hattie, disguised as a boy, joins her widowed pa and his rafting crew on a perilous logging voyage. Pa used to call Ma and me his girls. Now, he just says "girl," orders me around with curse words like I'm nothing. I'm not nothing, though, 'cause I feel too mean inside to be that. The year is 1883, Hattie's ma has died, and it seems that she took with her the sugar that kept Hattie and Pa sweet. Just when Hattie thinks things can't get any worse, Pa stops calling her "girl" altogether and wants her to dress as a boy and help him on his next river-rafting trip. Soon eleven-year-old Hattie finds herself alongside Pa and two other Hill Hawks - loners who live life on their own terms up in the hills - shipping logs down the dangerous Delaware. On the angry river, Hattie's pluck is sorely tested as she fields Pa's criticism, plunges over waterfalls, and tries to keep the rowdy river men from discovering her secret. Gritty and full of heart, Clara Gillow Clark's historical novel will leave readers breathless as it surges along the complex, emotional journey of a father and daughter. It's a powerful story of how death can undo a family - and how, against all likelihood, it can bind them together.
