Reinvention of Edison Thomas, The

by Jacqueline Houtman

Eddy's a science geek and has problems communicating with others. The combination gives the class bully, who pretends to be Eddy's friend, plenty of ammunition. Eddy Thomas can read a college physics book, but he can't read the emotions on the faces of his classmates. He can spend hours tinkering with an invention, but he can't stand more than a few minutes in a noisy crowd, like the crowd at the science fair, which Eddy fails to win. When the local school crossing guard is laid off, Eddy is haunted by thoughts of the potentially disastrous consequences and invents a traffic-calming device, using parts he has scavenged from discarded machines. By trusting his real friends, Eddy uses his talents to help others and rethinks his purely mechanical definition of success.Named to the Kansas State Reading Circle Recommended Reading List; CCBC--Best of the Year; Tofte/Wright Children's Literature Award; starred review in Library Media Connection.

Rekenek 101: Pushing Mathematical Understanding

by Amy How

Designed and developed by a mathematic curriculum researcher at the Freudenthal Institute at Utrecht University, the rekenrek is an exciting and innovative classroom tool that enhances and supports the natural development of number sense in children. It encourages learning across a range of mathematical skills and concepts, from simple addition and subitization to commutativity, distributive property and fractions. However, despite the potential and versatility of this manipulative, there has been surprisingly little written about either its application or its benefits - until now. When the stacks of rekenreks first arrived at Amy How's school, she was tasked with discovering and explaining their function to the rest of the staff - despite the scarcity of current research or other information. Over the six years since, she has developed her own set of tasks and strategies, which she regularly presents to teachers around the world. These techniques – effective, straightforward and very popular – are the basis of this book. Rekenrek 101 is written in a format that makes for a useful teacher resource: not too long; clear, concise and inspiring enough for readers to try the new ideas the next day in class. It is easy to follow and easy to navigate while demonstrating a simple change in practice that stays up with current trends. This is not a book on theory, but it is based on what the latest research is telling us.

Relation of Virginia: A Boy's Memoir of Life with the Powhatans and the Patawomecks

by Karen Ordahl Kupperman Henry Spelman

A memoir of one of America’s first adventurers, a young boy who acted as a link between the Jamestown colonists and the Patawomecks and Powhatans "Being in displeasure of my friends, and desirous to see other countries, after three months sail we come with prosperous winds in sight of Virginia.” So begins the fascinating tale of Henry Spelman, a 14 year-old boy whose mother sent him to Virginia in 1609. One of Jamestown’s early arrivals, Spelman soon became an integral player, and sometimes a pawn, in the power struggle between the Chesapeake Algonquians and the English settlers. Shortly after he arrived in the Chesapeake, Henry accompanied another English boy, Thomas Savage, to Powhatan's capital and after a few months accompanied the Patawomeck chief Iopassus to the Potomac. Spelman learned Chesapeake Algonquian languages and customs, acted as an interpreter, and knew a host of colonial America’s most well-known figures, from Pocahontas to Powhatan to Captain John Smith. This remarkable manuscript tells Henry’s story in his own words, and it is the only description of Chesapeake Algonquian culture written with an insider's knowledge. Spelman's account is lively and violent, rich with anthropological and historical detail. A valuable and unique primary document, this book illuminates the beginnings of English America and tells us much about how the Chesapeake Algonquians viewed the English invaders. It provides the first transcription from the original manuscript since 1872.

Relentless Progress: The Reconfiguration of Children's Literature, Fairy Tales, and Storytelling

by Jack Zipes

Can fairy tales subvert consumerism? Can fantasy and children's literature counter the homogenizing influence of globalization? Can storytellers retain their authenticity in the age of consumerism? These are some of the critical questions raised by Jack Zipes, the celebrated scholar of fairy tales and children's literature. In this book, Zipes argues that, despite a dangerous reconfiguration of children as consumers in the civilizing process, children's literature, fairy tales, and storytelling possess a uniquely powerful (even fantastic)capacity to resist the "relentless progress" of negative trends in culture. He also argues that these tales and stories may lose their power if they are too diluted by commercialism and merchandising. Stories have been used for centuries as a way to teach children (and adults) how to see the world, as well as their place within it. In Relentless Progress, Zipes looks at the surprising ways that stories have influenced people within contemporary culture and vice versa. Among the many topics explored here are the dumbing down of books for children, the marketing of childhood, the changing shape of feminist fairy tales, and why American and British children aren’t exposed to more non-western fairy tales. From picture books to graphic novels, from children’s films to video games, from Grimm’s fairy tales to the multimedia Harry Potter phenomenon, Zipes demonstrates that while children’s stories have changed greatly in recent years, much about these stories have remained the same—despite their contemporary, high-tech repackaging. Relentless Progress offers remarkable insight into why classic folklore and fairy tales should remain an important part of the lives of children in today’s digital culture.

Religions of Africa (Africa: Progress and Problems)

by Lora Friedenthal

While African religions are as diverse as the continent itself, most Africans can be placed in one of three groups: followers of traditional religions, Islam, or Christianity. Until the 20th century, religion was rarely a primary source of conflict. However, in recent years Muslim-Christian tensions have contributed to unrest in such nations as Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania. This book is intended as an introduction to the practice of religion in Africa today. It provides a brief history of religious development in Africa, discusses the common religious practices in various regions of the continent, and explores the role of religion in current African conflicts.
