Story Elements: Learning About The Components of Stories to Deepen Comprehension
by Kathryn WheelerStory Elements--Grades 3-4 is designed to introduce young readers and writers to the tools that authors use as they create stories. The activities explore the concepts of character, setting, problem (conflict), and plot. The book is divided into sections for each concept, with mixed-skills pages at the end. In each section, activities progress from an introductory page to more challenging exercises. Pages from this book can be used individually to strengthen the recognition of a specific element, or to introduce it as a topic. Teachers might want to use certain pages on more difficult concepts-such as identifying a story's climax-to help review the material after it has been worked on in class.

A Story for Small Bear
by Alice B. McGintyIn this sweet, lyrical picture book, perfect for bedtime, a playful cub prepares for hibernation, saving just enough time for Mama to share a story before they must settle down.Autumn is ending and a chilly breeze is drifting in, which can mean only one thing-- it's time to hibernate over the long winter. But before Small Bear does, she'd like for Mama to tell her some stories. Mama agrees, with one condition: all the preparation must get done-- no dilly, no dally. So Small Bear tries to be good, venturing off to find sprigs for her winter bed, splishing and splashing in the stream, and climbing up, up, up into the tall forest trees in search of acorns. When she finally returns home, Small Bear snuggles down with Mama in their den. Did she make it back in time? "You did," Mama answers, and pulls her in close. And then Mama tells the most wonderful tale of a little bear--just like Small Bear--who, while enjoying the world around her, saved just enough time for stories.

Story in Children's Lives: Contributions of the Narrative Mode to Early Childhood Development, Literacy, and Learning (Educating the Young Child #16)
by Kelli Jo Kerry-Moran Juli-Anna AerilaThis book is based on the power of stories to support children in all areas of their lives. It examines the role narratives can play in encouraging growth in contexts and domains such as personal and family identity, creative movement, memory and self-concept, social relationships, or developing a sense of humor. Each chapter describes innovative and research-based applications of narratives such as movement stories, visual narratives to develop historical thinking, multimodal storytelling, bibliotherapy, mathematics stories, family stories, and social narratives. The chapters elaborate on the strength of narratives in supporting the whole child in diverse contexts from young children on the autism spectrum improving their social skills at school, to four- and five-year-olds developing historical thinking, to children who are refugees or asylum-seekers dealing with uncertainty and loss. Written by accomplished teachers, researchers, specialists, teaching artists and teacher educators from several countries and backgrounds, the book fills a gap in the literature on narratives. “…this work delves into the topic of narratives in young children’s lives with a breadth of topics and depth of study not found elsewhere.” “Collectively, the insights of the contributors build a convincing case for emphasizing story across the various disciplines and developmental domains of the early childhood years.” “The writing style is scholarly, yet accessible. Authors used a wide array of visual material to make their points clearer and show the reader what meaningful uses of story “look like”.” Mary Renck Jalongo, Journal and Book Series Editor Springer Indiana, PA, USA

That hen was not alone on the floor: hundreds of them, by their side, laid an egg behind another, clumping extraordinary stories that only the initiated hens knew ...

Once it did, Aftermath was on a roll, producing platinum albums by megastars like Eminem and 50 Cent. The record label combined the creativity and fresh material of new rap stars with the special touch only a musical genius like Dr. Dre could add. Born out of the violent era of the West Coast-East Coast rap feud, Aftermath carried Dr. Dre's hopes of creating a record label that focused solely on music, not violence. There were some false starts along the way. But it did not take Aftermath long to introduce some of rap's biggest names to the world and sell millions upon millions of albums.

The Story of Alexander Graham Bell, Inventor of the Telephone
by Margaret DavidsonA readable, interesting biography of the famous inventor, paying equal attention to his scientific achievements, his personal life, and his lifelong work with the deaf. There are several odd omissions, though, including why Bell adopted the middle name Graham; the spilled-acid aspect of the first telephone message and Bell's demonstration of the telephone before Queen Victoria.
