The Mighty Queens of Freeville: A Mother, a Daughter, and the Town That Raised Them

by Amy Dickinson

Dear Amy,First my husband told me he didn't love me. Then he said he didn't think he had ever really loved me. Then he left me with a baby to raise by myself. Amy, I don't want to be a single mother.I told myself I'd never be divorced. And now here I am--exactly where I didn't want to be!My daughter and I live in London. We don't really have any friends here. What should we do?Desperate Dear Desperate,I have an idea.Take your baby, get on a plane, and move back to your dinky hometown in upstate New York--the place you couldn't wait to leave when you were young. Live with your sister in the back bedroom of her tiny bungalow. Cry for five weeks. Nestle in with your quirky family of hometown women--many of them single, like you. Drink lots of coffee and ask them what to do. Do your best to listen to their advice but don't necessarily follow it.Start to work in Washington, DC. Start to date. Make friends. Fail up. Develop a career as a job doula. Teach nursery school and Sunday School.Watch your daughter grow. When she's a teenager, just when you're both getting comfortable, uproot her and move to Chicago to take a job writing a nationally syndicated advice column.Do your best to replace a legend. Date some more.Love fiercely. Laugh with abandon. Grab your second chance--and your third, and your fourth.Send your daughter to college. Cry for five more weeks.Move back again to your dinky hometown and the women who helped raise you.Find love, finally. And take care.Amy

Migrant Communication Enterprises

by Maria Sabaté i Dalmau

This unique critical sociolinguistic ethnography explores alternative migrant-regulated institutions of resistance and subversive communication technology: the locutorios or ethnic call shops. These migrant-owned businesses act as a window into their multimodal and hybrid linguistic and communicative practices, and into their own linguistic hierarchies and non-mainstream sociolinguistic orders. Here, socially displaced but technologically empowered transnational migrant populations actively find subversive ways to access information and communication technologies. As such they mobilise their own resources to successfully inhabit Catalonia, at the margins of powerful institutions. The book also focuses on the (internal) social organisation dynamics, as well as on the simultaneous fight against, and re-production of, practices and processes of social difference and social inequality among migrants themselves.

Migrant Workers’ Narratives of Return: Alienation and Identity Transformations (Routledge Studies in Sociolinguistics)

by Hans J. Ladegaard

Drawing on a corpus of 113 narratives told by migrant workers who have returned to their home country, Ladegaard details Indonesian and Filipina (domestic) migrant workers’ experiences of homecoming after years of work abroad, separated from their loved ones. The narratives deal with two major themes: 1) Migrant workers’ experiences in the diaspora, which for many, particularly Indonesian workers, were associated with abuse and exploitation leading to trauma; and 2) migrant workers’ experiences of coming home, which include both the happy reunion with the family but also concerns about not ‘fitting in’ and the need to reinvent themselves because they are not who they were when they left. This is particularly true for workers whose migratory journeys have failed and who have come back to their hometowns without any financial award. Chapters also explore the major difference between Filipina and Indonesian migrant workers’ overseas experiences. The Filipina returnees share mostly positive stories while the Indonesian returnees uncover mostly negative stories, further illuminating what may explain these diverse migratory experiences. Finally, the book discusses how research on disenfranchised groups like (domestic) migrant workers can be used for social and political action. An excellent text that will appeal to academics, teachers and postgraduate students in the humanities and social sciences, particularly in sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, intercultural communication, anthropology, and migration studies.

Mil palabras

by Gabriel Zaid

Militarized Maternity: Experiencing Pregnancy in the U.S. Armed Forces

by Megan D. McFarlane

The rights of pregnant workers as well as (the lack of) paid maternity leave have increasingly become topics of a major policy debate in the United States. Yet, few discussions have focused on the U.S. military, where many of the latest policy changes focus on these very issues. Despite the armed forces' increases to maternity-related benefits, servicewomen continue to be stigmatized for being pregnant and taking advantage of maternity policies. In an effort to understand this disconnect, Megan McFarlane analyzes military documents and conducts interviews with enlisted servicewomen and female officers. She finds a policy/culture disparity within the military that pregnant servicewomen themselves often co-construct, making the policy changes significantly less effective. McFarlane ends by offering suggestions for how these policy changes can have more impact and how they could potentially serve as an example for the broader societal debate.

Millennials and Conflict in the Workplace: Understand the Unique Traits of the Now Generation

by Cynthia Pearce LeMay

This book unravels the mysteries and confusion surrounding Millennials. They are now the largest group in the labor force and their presence redefines the workplace for many organizations. Many older workers, who struggle to understand Millennials, often define them by stereotypes rather than their actual attributes. The historical and social events that occurred when Millennials were growing up are reviewed, which can result in traits and values specific to this cohort. The research behind this book explores the conflict styles of Millennials compared to Generation Xers and Baby Boomers – the unique strategies they are likely to use to address conflict in the workplace. This book shares the results of interviews and focus groups providing first-hand accounts from Millennials and non-Millennials about their work interactions. And the results from approximately 11,000 test-takers of the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument provide fascinating findings about generational differences in conflict styles. Millennials grew up with technology at their fingertips and tend to avoid conflict and seek advice from their online support groups. The book will also dig into Millennials’ powerful use of social media and how they use it to further their causes. They have a strong desire to know what’s happening now and find it difficult to “turn off.” This book explores generational differences and finds an increase in unassertive styles in Millennial males. This work shares what Millennials want and value in a workplace and what employers can do to recruit and retain this valuable cohort. Millennials’ diversity, political and social engagement, and the implications for the broader society are explored. This research fills an important gap in the research on generational cohorts and conflict management and provides valuable information to scholars and practitioners alike.

Millimeter-Wave Communication Systems: Network Analysis and Hybrid Precoding Design

by Kai Yang Minwei Shi Hang Yuan Zhitong Ni

This book investigates the analytical framework and hybrid precoding scheme in millimeter-wave networks. Millimeter-wave communication is a frontier technology for supporting ultra-high data rate transmissions in future wireless networks due to larger bandwidth and higher spectral efficiency. However, the involved interference characterization and increased energy consumption are two dominant limitations in millimeter-wave network evolution. In this monograph, we develop a unified analytical framework for large-scale millimeter-wave communication networks, which leads to abundant network design insights and guidelines. Under this framework, we design low-complexity hybrid precoding algorithms for millimeter-wave systems, which greatly reduce energy consumption without obvious performance degradation. We would like to highlight that we develop a unified analytical framework and low-complexity hybrid precoding mechanisms for millimeter-wave communication networks, where a variety of millimeter-wave properties and hardware constraints are incorporated. The developed mechanisms can provide abundant insights and guidelines for the hybrid precoding design and analysis in millimeter-wave communication networks. Graduate students, researchers, and engineers in the field of communication networks can benefit from the book.

Millimeter-Wave Networks: Beamforming Design and Performance Analysis (Wireless Networks)

by Peng Yang Wen Wu Ning Zhang Xuemin Shen

This book provides a comprehensive review and in-depth study on efficient beamforming design and rigorous performance analysis in mmWave networks, covering beam alignment, beamforming training and beamforming-aided caching. Due to significant beam alignment latency between the transmitter and the receiver in existing mmWave systems, this book proposes a machine learning based beam alignment algorithm for mmWave networks to determine the optimal beam pair with a low latency. Then, to analyze and enhance the performance of beamforming training (BFT) protocol in 802.11ad mmWave networks, an analytical model is presented to evaluate the performance of BFT protocol and an enhancement scheme is proposed to improve its performance in high user density scenarios. Furthermore, it investigates the beamforming-aided caching problem in mmWave networks, and proposes a device-to-device assisted cooperative edge caching to alleviate backhaul congestion and reduce content retrieval delay. This book concludes with future research directions in the related fields of study. The presented beamforming designs and the corresponding research results covered in this book, provides valuable insights for practical mmWave network deployment and motivate new ideas for future mmWave networking. This book targets researchers working in the fields of mmWave networks, beamforming design, and resource management as well as graduate students studying the areas of electrical engineering, computing engineering and computer science. Professionals in industry who work in this field will find this book useful as a reference.
