Innovative Issues in Intelligent Systems

by Ronald R. Yager Janusz Kacprzyk Vassil Sgurev Vladimir Jotsov

This bookpresents a broad variety of different contemporary IT methods and applications inIntelligent Systems is displayed. Every book chapter represents a detailed, specific, far reaching and original re-search in a respective scientific andpractical field. However, all of the chapters share the common point of strongsimilarity in a sense of being innovative, applicable and mutually compatiblewith each other. In other words, the methods from the different chapters can beviewed as bricks for building the next generation "thinking machines" as wellas for other futuristic logical applications that are rapidly changing ourworld nowadays.

Innovative Learning Analytics for Evaluating Instruction: A Big Data Roadmap to Effective Online Learning

by Rodney D. Myers Theodore W. Frick Cesur Dagli Andrew F. Barrett

Innovative Learning Analytics for Evaluating Instruction covers the application of a forward-thinking research methodology that uses big data to evaluate the effectiveness of online instruction. Analysis of Patterns in Time (APT) is a practical analytic approach that finds meaningful patterns in massive data sets, capturing temporal maps of students’ learning journeys by combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Offering conceptual and research overviews, design principles, historical examples, and more, this book demonstrates how APT can yield strong, easily generalizable empirical evidence through big data; help students succeed in their learning journeys; and document the extraordinary effectiveness of First Principles of Instruction. It is an ideal resource for faculty and professionals in instructional design, learning engineering, online learning, program evaluation, and research methods.

Innovative Learning Environments in STEM Higher Education: Opportunities, Challenges, and Looking Forward (SpringerBriefs in Statistics)

by Kurt Winkelmann Jungwoo Ryoo

As explored in this open access book, higher education in STEM fields is influenced by many factors, including education research, government and school policies, financial considerations, technology limitations, and acceptance of innovations by faculty and students. In 2018, Drs. Ryoo and Winkelmann explored the opportunities, challenges, and future research initiatives of innovative learning environments (ILEs) in higher education STEM disciplines in their pioneering project: eXploring the Future of Innovative Learning Environments (X-FILEs). Workshop participants evaluated four main ILE categories: personalized and adaptive learning, multimodal learning formats, cross/extended reality (XR), and artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This open access book gathers the perspectives expressed during the X-FILEs workshop and its follow-up activities. It is designed to help inform education policy makers, researchers, developers, and practitioners about the adoption and implementation of ILEs in higher education.

Innovative Practices in Teaching Information Sciences and Technology

by John M. Carroll

University teaching and learning has never been more innovative than it is now. This has been enabled by a better contemporary understanding of teaching and learning. Instructors now present situated projects and practices to their students, not just foundational principles. Lectures and structured practice are now often replaced by engaging and constructivist learning activities that leverage what students know about, think about and care about. Teaching innovation has also been enabled by online learning in the classroom, beyond the classroom and beyond the campus. Learning online is perhaps not the panacea sometimes asserted but it is a disruptively rich and expanding set of tools and techniques that can facilitate engaging and constructivist learning activities. It is becoming the new normal in university teaching and learning. The opportunity and the need for innovation in teaching and learning are together keenest in information technology itself: Computer and Information Science faculty and students are immersed in innovation. The subject matter of these disciplines changes from one year to the next; courses and curricula are in constant flux. And indeed each wave of disciplinary innovation is assimilated into technology tools and infrastructures for teaching new and emerging concepts and techniques. Innovative Practices in Teaching Information Sciences and Technology: Experience Reports and Reflections describes a set of innovative teaching practices from the faculty of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University. Each chapter is a personal essay describing practices, implemented by one or two faculty that challenge assumptions and push beyond standard practice at the individual faculty and classroom level. These are innovations that instructors elsewhere may find directly accessible and adaptable. Taken as a set, this book is a case study of teaching innovation as a part of faculty culture. Innovation is not optional in information technology; it inheres in both the disciplinary subject matter and in teaching. But it is an option for instructors to collectively embrace innovation as a faculty. The chapters in this book taken together, embody this option and provide a partial model to faculties for reflecting on and refining their own collective culture of teaching innovation.

Innovative Practices in Teaching Information Sciences and Technology: Further Experience Reports and Reflections

by John M. Carroll

Information Sciences and Technology (IST) is a rapidly developing, interdisciplinary area of university research and educational programs. It encompasses artificial intelligence, data science, human-computer interaction, security and privacy, and social informatics. In both research and teaching, IST ambitiously addresses interdisciplinary synergies across this broad foundation. Many articles and books discuss innovative research practices in IST, but innovations in teaching practices are less systematically shared. Although new programs and new faculty join IST each year, they basically have only their own imaginations to draw upon in developing effective and appropriate innovative teaching practices. This book presents essays by experienced faculty instructors in IST describing insights that emerged from teaching and learning classroom practice, and that have been validated through classroom experience. The book is intended to help develop and strengthen a community of practice for innovative teaching in IST.
