Flipping the Classroom: What Every ESL Teacher Should Know
by Robyn Brinks Lockwood“I realized that [flipping] was not going to be a passing fad or a catchphrase we would hear about for a while before it faded away and was replaced with another . . . . Regardless of when, where, or how you flip, this approach seems here to stay [because] the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.” This small ebook provides a brief but helpful introduction to ESL/EFL teachers who want to better understand the educational phenomenon of flipping and implement it into their classrooms. In this ebook, Lockwood, author of Flip It! Strategies for the ESL Classroom, answers some of the most frequently asked questions about why and how to flip and dispels some of the common myths about flipping (e.g., “Flipped classrooms don’t use textbooks” and “Flipping requires me to make videos of myself”). She discusses the benefits of flipping for teachers and students and also talks about lessons she’s learned from her experience flipping her ESL classrooms. The text is organized through a set of questions (or myths) related to flipping the classroom. The questions this ebook answers are: What is flipping? What about my textbooks? What about technology? What about class time? Do I have to do it that way? What's in it for me?
Flocking Together: An Indigenous Psychology Theory of Resilience in Southern Africa
by Liesel EbersöhnThis book describes how those individuals who are often most marginalised in postcolonial societies draw on age-old, non-western knowledge systems to adapt to the hardships characteristic of unequal societies in transformation. It highlights robust indigenous pathways and resilience responses used by elders and young people in urban and rural settings in challenging Southern African settings (South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland) to explain an Indigenous Psychology theory. Flocking (rather than fighting, fleeing, freezing or fainting) is explained as a default collectivist, collaborative and pragmatic social innovation to provide communal care and support when resources are constrained, and needs are par for the course. Flocking is used to address, amongst others, climate change (drought and energy use in particular), lack of household income and securing livelihoods, food and nutrition, chronic disease (specifically HIV / AIDS and tuberculosis), barriers to access services (education, healthcare, social welfare support), as well as leisure and wellbeing. The book further deliberates whether the continued use of such an entrenched socio-cultural response mollifies citizens and decision-makers into accepting inequality, or whether it could also be used to spark citizen agency and disrupt longstanding structural disparities.

Florida Atlantic University
by Donald W. CurlBuilt on the site of the abandoned Boca Raton Army Air Field, Florida Atlantic niversity, in the short period since its founding in the 1960s, has come to be a well-regarded institution of higher education in Florida. Overcoming such early challenges as poor road systems in the area, unsuccessful recruitingefforts, and student unrest arising from the Civil Rights Movement and the conflict in Vietnam, university leaders tirelessly promoted the vision that would eventually become a reality--Florida Atlantic University becoming a successful regional university. This engaging pictorial retrospective begins in the days prior to FAU's first semester and depicts the early players in the school's establishment, the construction of the first campus buildings, and the legislative planning and funding that made much of it possible.

Flourishing Together: A Christian Vision for Students, Educators, and Schools
by Andy Wolfe Lynn E. SwanerHow do students, educators, and schools flourish together—especially in an era of increasing pressure from standardized testing, growing challenges to student mental health and well-being, and frequent educator burnout? Many schools strive toward academic achievement as their primary marker of success, but this well-meaning approach can lead to a reductionist view in which students are too often seen as statistics rather than whole human beings. Teachers, school leaders, parents, and of course students know that flourishing is a much broader and more holistic aim for education. But what is to be done? The goal of this book is to call Christian educators back to a better vision of flourishing within a robust theological framework, with the practical guidance necessary for implementation. To accomplish this, Lynn Swaner and Andy Wolfe take readers through an exploration of five essential domains identified through extensive empirical research—purpose, relationships, learning, resources, and well-being.An ideal resource for professional development and strategic planning, Flourishing Together persistently adheres to the principle that &“anything that is worth building cannot be built alone.&” Thus, the vision for flourishing here is one in which the school community is understood as an interconnected ecosystem, in which &“each one&’s flourishing is dependent on their flourishing together.&” Accordingly, teachers and administrators will be inspired and equipped to reshape their schools as places where they—alongside their students—can flourish together in a community of abundant life.
Flourishing as the Aim of Education: A Neo-Aristotelian View (Routledge International Studies in the Philosophy of Education)
by Kristján KristjánssonThis book develops a conception of student flourishing as the overarching aim of education. Taking as its basis the Aristotelian concept of eudaimonia, it provides a theoretical study of the foundations of flourishing that goes well beyond Aristotle’s approach. Flourishing as the Aim of Education argues that the ‘good life’ of the student, to which education should contribute, must involve engagement with self-transcendent ideals and ignite awe-filled enchantment. It allows for social, individual and educational variance within the concept of flourishing, and it engages with a host of socio-political as well as ‘spiritual’ issues that are often overlooked in literature discussing character education. Each chapter closes with food for thought for practitioners who can directly facilitate student flourishing. An outgrowth of the author’s previous monograph Aristotelian Character Education, this book follows new directions in questioning how to educate young people towards a life of overall flourishing. It will be of great interest to researchers, academics and post-graduate students in the fields of character education, moral education and moral philosophy, as well as to educators and policy-makers.

Flourishing in the Early Years: Contexts, practices and futures
by Zenna Kingdon, Jan Gourd and Michael GasperIf young children are to flourish and become happy, confident and motivated learners, they need to develop in an environment that gives them the opportunities and freedom to play and learn, along with the support of parents and practitioners who are flourishing themselves. This invaluable text looks at the conditions that enable all those engaged in the early years sector to flourish, covering themes such as the outdoor environment, the curriculum, parent partnership, equality and ethical practice. Divided into three sections, each part covers: Concepts: A consideration of how flourishing is framed by political, historical and policy frameworks. Practices: Exploring the issues that early years practitioners are faced with when engaging with parents and multi-agent professionals within their setting. Futures: Examining some of the long-term issues that may need to be revisited on a regular basis to enable continual and flourishing development to occur. With key points and reflective tasks, this book will be valuable reading to all students and practitioners working in the early childhood education and care sector who want to ensure that the children in their care are given the best possible start in life.
