Vaccines: Are they Worth a Shot?

by Andrea Grignolio Joan Rundo

The dangerous decline in vaccinations in many developed countries is at the heart of a lively debate that confirms how important the subject is today. Vaccinations are among mankind’s most important scientific discoveries, yet they continue to be viewed with suspicion by part of the public – the victims of disinformation campaigns, instrumentalization and unfounded fears. There is, however, also an evolutionary explanation for these irrational beliefs, and countering the growing social opposition will be extremely difficult without grasping it. This book, which sheds new light on the safety and importance of vaccinations, is intended both for parents and those readers who want to understand the role of vaccinations in contemporary society, where the ease of access to knowledge is both a great opportunity and a great responsibility. The chapters follow a historical progression and conclude with a discussion of the most recent cognitive theories on how to overcome this opposition to vaccinations.

Valdosta State University

by Deborah Skinner Davis

In January of 1913, South Georgia State Normal College opened in Valdosta, Georgia, with three students who paid $10 a year for tuition and $12 per month for food and board. Colonel W.S. West donated land for the campus to the state, the Georgia Senate allocated $25,000 to the school, the city of Valdosta raised $50,000, and Richard Holmes Powell was chosen as the school's first president. From this early ambitious endeavor to educate the traditionally underserved students of South Georgia grew a college that has served not only as an institution of higher learning but also as a valuable resource for citizens all over the region. Known as Georgia State Womens College (1992-1950) and Valdosta State College (1950-1993), Valdosta State University boasts a long and distinguished history. What was once a training school for teachers now offers a wide variety of undergraduate programs and awards masters and several doctorate degrees. Within these pages, the colorful characters, cherished traditions, memorable social and sporting events, and picturesque campus of VSU are all brought to life. Photographs taken from the Valdosta State University Archives date back to the school's beginnings, before the student body became co-educational. View the early May Queens and their courts parading on school grounds and the Old English Christmas Feast; step back to the days when men first arrived on campus, bringing a variety of new social, civic, and athletic organizations with them; and discover the remarkable beauty of the school's Spanish Mission-style campus.

Valedictorians at the Gate: Standing Out, Getting In, and Staying Sane While Applying to College

by Becky Munsterer Sabky

Named one of Grown & Flown's “Best Book on College Admissions and Paying for College”“The most honest, most helpful book I’ve ever read on applying to college” —New York Times bestselling author Adam GrantA former Ivy League Admissions Officer offers an inspiring battle cry for sanity in the college application process that looks beyond the rankings to successfully determine what’s truly the best school for you or your child. After spending years as a college admissions director at Dartmouth, Becky Munsterer Sabky had seen it all. The perfect grades, the perfect scores, and the perfect extracurriculars. Valedictorians were knocking at the gate, but Becky realized that in their quest for admission many of these students were missing something. Their transcripts were golden, their interviews polished, but they weren’t applying for college, they were competing for it—and in the end they didn’t know what prize they were really striving for.In Valedictorians at the Gate, Sabky looks beyond the smoke and mirrors of the intimidating admissions gauntlet and places the power firmly where it should be: in the hands of the students themselves. Offering prescriptive, actionable advice for students and their (hopefully not helicoptering) parents, Sabky illuminates the pathway to finding the school that is the ideal match.Witty and warm, informative and inspiring, Valedictorians at the Gate is the needed tonic for overstressed, overworked, and overwhelmed students on their way to the perfect college for them.

Valences of Interdisciplinarity: Theory, Practice, Pedagogy

by Raphael Foshay

The modern university can trace its roots to Kant's call for enlightened self-determination, with education aiming to produce an informed and responsible body of citizens. As the university evolved, specialized areas of investigation emerged, enabling ever more precise research and increasingly nuanced arguments. In recent decades, however, challenges to the hegemony of disciplines have arisen, partly in response to a perceived need for the university to focus greater energy on its public vocation—teaching and the dissemination of knowledge. Valences of Interdisciplinarity presents essays by an international array of scholars committed to enhancing our understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and the practical realities of interdisciplinary teaching and research. What is, and what should be, motivating our reflections on (and practice of) approaches that transcend the conventional boundaries of discipline? And in adopting such transdisciplinary approaches, how do we safeguard critical methods and academic rigour? Reflecting on the obstacles they have encountered both as thinkers and as educators, the authors map out innovative new directions for the interdisciplinary project. Together, the essays promise to set the standards of the debate about interdisciplinarity for years to come.

Valentine to a Flying Mouse

by Laura Hawkins

[from the dust cover flaps:] "Just before the fourth-grade Valentine's Day party, the valentines mysteriously disappear from the class boxes! Who could be responsible? "Maybe," Tammy Collins speculates, "it's possible whoever took them didn't want to be embarrassed by not getting very many valentines." Could it be that Tammy herself is behind the missing cards? Tammy's life certainly has been confusing lately. Her parents have recently separated and she wonders why her father left. Is something wrong with her? And her attempt to form a secret club backfires when her "surprise"--her flying mouse, Itty-Bitty--refused to perform at the first meeting. Tammy's visits to a local poet for some valentine-writing advice leads to a friendship that reveals the satisfying rewards of giving love to others--to her school friends, to Papadakis, to Itty-Bitty, and to her father. As Tammy helps Papadakis take his first steps with a walker, she takes the first steps toward gaining confidence in her own special qualities. It's a truly happy Valentine's Day indeed! Laura Hawkins's lively story about a young girl's blossoming self-confidence will entertain and inspire young readers and fans of her previous Riverview books, Figment, your dog, speaking and The Cat That Could Spell Mississippi. Laura Hawkins is a full-time writer who lives in Herington, Kansas. Valerie Solanas: The Defiant Life of the Woman Who Wrote Scum (and Shot Andy Warhol)

by Breanne Fahs

The authoritative biography of the 60s countercultural icon who wrote SCUM Manifesto, shot Andy Warhol, and made an unforgettable mark on feminist history. Valerie Solanas is one of the most polarizing figures of 1960s counterculture. A cult hero to some and vehemently denounced by others, she has been dismissed but never forgotten. Known for shooting Andy Warhol in 1968 and for writing the infamous SCUM Manifesto, Solanas became one of the most famous women of her era. But she was also diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and spent much of her life homeless or in mental hospitals. Solanas&’s SCUM Manifesto, a sui generis vision of radical gender dystopia, predicted ATMs, test-tube babies, the Internet, and artificial insemination long before they existed. It has sold more copies and been translated into more languages than nearly all other feminist texts of its time. And yet, shockingly little work has investigated the life of its author. This book is the first biography about Solanas, including original interviews with family, friends (and enemies), and numerous living Warhol associates. It reveals surprising details about Solanas&’s life: the children nearly no one knew she had, her drive for control over her own writing, and her elusive personal and professional relationships. Valerie Solanas reveals the tragic, remarkable life of an iconic figure. It is &“not only a remarkable biographical feat but also a delicate navigation of an unwieldy, demanding, and complex life story&” (BOMB Magazine).

Validating Technological Innovation

by David Coniam Peter Falvey

This book discusses Hong Kong's use of onscreen marking (OSM) in public examinations. Given that Hong Kong leads the way in OSM innovation, this book has arisen from a recognised need to provide a comprehensive, coherent account of the findings of various separate but linked validation studies of onscreen public examinations in Hong Kong. The authors discuss their experience of the validation process, demonstrating how high-stakes innovation should be fully validated by a series of research studies in order to satisfy key stakeholders.

Validation of Score Meaning for the Next Generation of Assessments: The Use of Response Processes

by James W. Pellegrino Kadriye Ercikan

Despite developments in research and practice on using examinee response process data in assessment design, the use of such data in test validation is rare. Validation of Score Meaning in the Next Generation of Assessments Using Response Processes highlights the importance of validity evidence based on response processes and provides guidance to measurement researchers and practitioners in creating and using such evidence as a regular part of the assessment validation process. Response processes refer to approaches and behaviors of examinees when they interpret assessment situations and formulate and generate solutions as revealed through verbalizations, eye movements, response times, or computer clicks. Such response process data can provide information about the extent to which items and tasks engage examinees in the intended ways. With contributions from the top researchers in the field of assessment, this volume includes chapters that focus on methodological issues and on applications across multiple contexts of assessment interpretation and use. In Part I of this book, contributors discuss the framing of validity as an evidence-based argument for the interpretation of the meaning of test scores, the specifics of different methods of response process data collection and analysis, and the use of response process data relative to issues of validation as highlighted in the joint standards on testing. In Part II, chapter authors offer examples that illustrate the use of response process data in assessment validation. These cases are provided specifically to address issues related to the analysis and interpretation of performance on assessments of complex cognition, assessments designed to inform classroom learning and instruction, and assessments intended for students with varying cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

Validity in Educational and Psychological Assessment

by Stuart D Shaw Paul E Newton

Lecturers, request your electronic inspection copy to review it for your course. Validity is the hallmark of quality for educational and psychological measurement. But what does quality mean in this context? And to what, exactly, does the concept of validity apply? These apparently innocuous questions parachute the unwary inquirer into a minefield of tricky ideas. This book guides you through this minefield, investigating how the concept of validity has evolved from the nineteenth century to the present day. Communicating complicated concepts straightforwardly, the authors answer questions like: What does 'validity' mean? What does it mean to 'validate'? How many different kinds of validity are there? When does validation begin and end? Is reliability a part of validity, or distinct from it? This book will be of interest to anyone with a professional or academic interest in evaluating the quality of educational or psychological assessments, measurements and diagnoses.

Validity of Educational Assessments in Chile and Latin America

by Jorge Manzi María Rosa García Sandy Taut

This edited volume presents a systematic analysis of conceptual, methodological and applied aspects related to the validation of educational tests used in Latin American countries. Inspired by international standards on educational measurement and evaluation, this book illustrates efforts that have been made in several countries to validate different types of educational assessments, including student learning assessments, measurements of non-cognitive aspects in students, teacher evaluations, and tests for certification and selection. It gathers the experience of validity studies from the main international assessments in Latin America (PISA, TIMSS, ERCE, and ICCS). Additionally, it shows the challenges that must be taken into account when evaluations are used to compare countries, groups or trends of achievement over time. The book builds on the premise that measurements in the educational field should not be used if there are no studies that support the validity of the interpretation of their scores, or the use made of such tests. It shows that, despite the recognition given to validity, relatively few educational measurement assessments have accumulated enough evidence to support their interpretation and use. In doing so, this volume increases awareness about the relevance of validity, especially when assessments are key component of educational policies.

Valley Interfaith and School Reform: Organizing for Power in South Texas

by Dennis Shirley

Can public schools still educate America's children, particularly in poor and working class communities? Many advocates of school reform have called for dismantling public education in favor of market-based models of reform such as privatization and vouchers.
By contrast, this pathfinding book explores how community organizing and activism in support of public schools in one of America's most economically disadvantaged regions, the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, has engendered impressive academic results.

Dennis Shirley focuses the book around case studies of three schools that have benefited from the reform efforts of a community group called Valley Interfaith, which works to develop community leadership and boost academic achievement. He follows the remarkable efforts of teachers, parents, school administrators, clergy, and community activists to take charge of their schools and their communities and describes the effects of these efforts on students' school performance and testing results.
