Diabetic Recipes for One and Two

by Michelle Berriedale-Johnson

Over 500 million people worldwide are living with diabetes. There is a continued universal increase in prevalence, confirming diabetes as a significant global challenge to the health and well-being of individuals, families and societies. Present figures indicate USA more than 130 million, UK almost 5 million, and 1.3 million in Australia with alarming levels of increase in Pakistan, India and the Middle East. Most cases of diabetes are Type 2 (non-insulin dependent) and happily this is controlled by diet and exercise. However, as many of today’s diabetics are either living alone or as a couple, preparing meals using regular diabetic cookbooks which cater for four or more people can provide meals that are too big and wasteful. Diabetic Recipes for One and Two solves the problem by offering a collection of easy, tempting recipes in smaller portions. Based on the very latest research it gives nutritional guidelines, advice on how to shop and plan your meals and over 100 recipes catering for contemporary culinary tastes, consisting of meals with a high intake of vegetables, pulses, fruit and whole grains.

The Diabetic Wine Lover's Guide

by Theordore Berland

Tired of “Diabetic DON’Ts?” Here’s a Diabetic DO! Enjoy a glass of good wine! Yes, even if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, you can enjoy alcohol in moderation – especially dry, red wine. Based on recent, serious scientific studies and evidence-based trials, The Diabetic Wine Lover’s Guideis designed as a communication tool for you and your health care practitioner. Together you can determine if dry, red wine should become part of your diet. Here are three reasons why that glass of wine might be good for you, according to the author: “One reason is that the amount of residual sugar in dry table wines is nil: a 3.5 ounce standard serving of dry table wine has, on average, less than a gram of sugar. “A second reason is that other constituents of wine, such as resveratrol and flavonoids, actually protect against diseases, including cardiac diseases, which diabetics are more prone to than the general population. “A third reason is that the alcohol in a glass of wine actually acts to lower both your blood sugar level and your blood pressure.” Author Theodore Berland, an award-winning medical writer, provides a readable yet thorough analysis of medical research. Numerous studies are cited and many health and lifestyle suggestions are included in this volume.

Diagnosing Folklore: Perspectives on Disability, Health, and Trauma

by Trevor J. Blank Andrea Kitta

Diagnosing Folklore provides an inclusive forum for an expansive conversation on the sensitive, raw, and powerful processes that shape and imbue meaning in the lives of individuals and communities beleaguered by medical stigmatization, conflicting public perceptions, and contextual constraints. This volume aims to showcase current ideas and debates, as well as promote the larger study of disability, health, and trauma within folkloristics, helping bridge the gaps between the folklore discipline and disability studies. This book consists of three sections, each dedicated to key issues in disability, health, and trauma. It explores the confluence of disability, ethnography, and the stigmatized vernacular through communicative competence, esoteric and exoteric groups in the Special Olympics, and the role of family in stigmatized communities. Then, it considers knowledge, belief, and treatment in regional and ethnic communities with case studies from the Latino/a community in Los Angeles, Javanese Indonesia, and Middle America. Lastly, the volume looks to the performance of mental illness, stigma, and trauma through contemporary legends about mental illness, vlogs on bipolar disorder, medical fetishism, and veterans' stories.

Diagnosing the Legacy: The Discovery, Research, and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes in Indigenous Youth

by Larry Krotz Frances Desjarlais Heather Dean Jonathan McGavock Michael Moffatt Elizabeth Sellers

In the late 1980s, pediatric endocrinologists at the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg began to notice a new cohort appearing in their clinics for young people with diabetes. Indigenous youngsters from two First Nations in northern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario were showing up not with type 1 (or insulin-dependent diabetes), but with what looked like type 2 diabetes, until then a condition that was restricted to people much older. Investigation led the doctors to learn that something similar had become a medical issue among young people of the Pima Indian Nation in Arizona though, to their knowledge, nobody else. But these youth were just the tip of the iceberg. Over the next few decades more children would confront what was turning into not only a medical but also a social and community challenge. "Diagnosing the Legacy" is the story of communities, researchers, and doctors who faced—and continue to face—something never seen before: type 2 diabetes in younger and younger people. Through dozens of interviews, Krotz shows the impact of the disease on the lives of individuals and families as well as the challenges caregivers faced diagnosing and then responding to the complex and perplexing disease, especially in communities far removed from the medical personnel a facilities available in the city.

Diagnosis: Truths and Tales shares stories told from the perspectives of those who receive diagnoses and those who deliver them. The Diagnosis of Psychosis

by Edward T. Bullmore Rudolf N. Cardinal

Psychosis has many causes. Psychiatrists typically receive the most thorough training in its diagnosis, but the diagnosis of psychosis secondary to nonpsychiatric conditions is not often emphasized. An understanding of the underlying cause of psychosis is important for effective management. The Diagnosis of Psychosis bridges the gap between psychiatry and medicine, providing a comprehensive review of primary and secondary causes of psychosis. It covers both common and rare causes in a clinically focused guide. Useful both for teaching and reference, the text covers physical and mental state examination, describes key investigations, and summarizes the non-psychiatric features of medical conditions causing psychosis. Particularly relevant for psychiatrists and trainees in psychiatry, this volume will also assist neurologists and general physicians who encounter psychosis in their practice.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (DSM-5), 5th edition

by American Psychiatric Association

This new edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5®), used by clinicians and researchers to diagnose and classify mental disorders, is the product of more than 10 years of effort by hundreds of international experts in all aspects of mental health. Their dedication and hard work have yielded an authoritative volume that defines and classifies mental disorders in order to improve diagnoses, treatment, and research. The criteria are concise and explicit, intended to facilitate an objective assessment of symptom presentations in a variety of clinical settings -- inpatient, outpatient, partial hospital, consultation-liaison, clinical, private practice, and primary care. New features and enhancements make DSM-5® easier to use across all settings: • The chapter organization reflects a lifespan approach, with disorders typically diagnosed in childhood (such as neurodevelopmental disorders) at the beginning of the manual, and those more typical of older adults (such as neurocognitive disorders) placed at the end. Also included are age-related factors specific to diagnosis. • The latest findings in neuroimaging and genetics have been integrated into each disorder along with gender and cultural considerations. • The revised organizational structure recognizes symptoms that span multiple diagnostic categories, providing new clinical insight in diagnosis. • Specific criteria have been streamlined, consolidated, or clarified to be consistent with clinical practice (including the consolidation of autism disorder, Asperger's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder into autism spectrum disorder; the streamlined classification of bipolar and depressive disorders; the restructuring of substance use disorders for consistency and clarity; and the enhanced specificity for major and mild neurocognitive disorders). • Dimensional assessments for research and validation of clinical results have been provided. • Both ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes are included for each disorder, and the organizational structure is consistent with the new ICD-11 in development. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, is the most comprehensive, current, and critical resource for clinical practice available to today's mental health clinicians and researchers of all orientations. The information contained in the manual is also valuable to other physicians and health professionals, including psychologists, counselors, nurses, and occupational and rehabilitation therapists, as well as social workers and forensic and legal specialists.
